Copyright violations? I don'/won't get this game just to see how far it copies, but I INSTANTLY recalled the ending of the first level of world 1 in SMB3. Make that exit pipe on the right shorter, make the split pipe on the left instead of top and bottom of a pipe, and slightly change the background though the concept is the same, and even have the same ground design though different colors, and you got SMB3.

are you even allowed to make that much money by copying the idea of a game and the graphics of another and then apparently faking downloads to make the game appear on a top spot in the app stores and all of that jazz so people will dl it just because its on a top spot??

It wasn't faked top 1, IIRC Pewdiepie played it and that boosted it enough to get everyone playing it.

You could also add another theory onto that: game looks styled a bit too similar to a certain Nintendo game - bloke gets a C&D so pulls this headline stunt off, makes more than enough to set up himself, family, pet gerbils etc for life, and we never see nor hear from him again!
The game got an update and the graphics were updated a bit to differ from the original Nintendo-ish style. But I digress.

As for the game itself making money, why not? If the guy can get a decent income from it, I'd figure he'd take the most out of it. Especially his home country can cause problems with people seeing a new rich person and wanting the wealth be shared.

It's not really a unique situation where a single person/company makes a huge profit suddenly. Just look at SuperCell (roughly 2-3 years and continuous profit + 50% shares sold for ~$1.5B). Same could be said about Rovio with Angry Birds. Like it or not, the games are pumping more dollars in a day than many people make in a year. Even in the US and other higher income countries.

Not just PewDiePie. Tobuscus, Jackfilms (although he only showed his score in one of his YGS videos), S Sundee, Minecraft Universe, etc.
All those youtubers playing the game gave it a huge popularity boost.

But yeah, it's a shitty game. Played 3 times and uninstalled it.

but wouldn't those things happen much more often if that was already enough? i find it much more reasonable to believe that the fake popularity boost was the reason those people ever even noticed the game in the first place.

its just like with dungeon keeper right now. it got terrible reviews but millions of perfect scores online, because they promise cool updates for enough 5 star ratings. despite all the terrible reviews, more and more people download this pitiful game, give it another 5 star rating before they realize the game is a terrible money pit

I was one of those people that downloaded it just because it was being pulled.
And I have to say, I'm not gonna miss it. It's way too basic of a concept that gets boring really quickly, and on top of that the game starts out so ridiculously hard you only get a few seconds of play time. It's not even a good time waster.
I could make a game like this myself in 10 minutes, minus the graphics (which look like they're just ripped from Super Mario anyway). Hell I might do just that, and try to profit off the popularity of this game (which I can't fathom)

The mobile market is very large, and unlike PC games and consoles games, you don't need to buy a new piece of hardware or upgrade your current one. That only applies to these type of game, the retro looking, not very demanding and competitive type. Getting to the game's section main page increases sales/downloads a lot since most people or the "casual" crowd will probably only look at the most downloaded or recently added games. My little sister for instance, she just goes to the App Store and scrolls down the popular list.

Those people I mentioned also own phones, like most people. If they find a funny game, they'll probably upload a video. Then people who haven't heard of said game will download it too.

I never even heard of it until this but it's impossible to erase something like this. I'm pretty sure APK file will float around forever for this, of course it's bit riskier to install it from other sources.

I hate these kind of games that get super popular by being super simple. These used to be flash games you played with browser and nobody was impressed where now you basically become god.

Never played it, saw 1 screenshot and immediately had flashbacks to Copter. Refused to play this after seeing what a shameless rip off it is.
Don't know how it got viral so incredibly fast, but I don't bother with it. Impressive news that he's pulling the app from the stores, that's pretty remarkable.
But like the intro says, prepare for the rip-offs :P

I tried it after reading the article and it sucks balls. You'll have to be really competitive to actually like this game. I quickly uninstalled it after 10 deaths.

ITT Sour grapes

It's amazing how offended people can be by things that have no impact on them whatsoever. Judging by GBAtemp alone, Angry Birds and Flappy Bird are the worst things to happen since World War I and II.

Fifty thousand a day and living in Vietnam might be nothing short of trouble. Considering, when I went over there, two hundred dollars can last someone a month or two, he might be getting too much fame and I actually see why this might be an issue.
