No, he's just being weird. If that were true they wouldn't be in his quote right now. And I think he meant; SW1246-first 4=46, therefore your firmware should be 4.6. Idk though hahaa

Canada uses the same serial`s as USA, find one with Nintendo 2012 copyright & SW12 or below serial number.

Lol, well either way, if anyone finds any spare time to compile a list of serial codes and their respective firmwares+regions-THAT'D BE AWESOME!! Just sold my 3DS so I'm going to look for a 4.5 or below on boxing day or something.

Just in case anyone was looking for a 2012 NTSC 3DS XL, I've asked the seller on ebay and he confirmed that all of his red 3DS XL's are 2012.

but finally decided to contribute. I just got a pink/white 3ds xl from target circa 2012 with version 4.5.0-10U with serial number start at SW1286. Just to confirm this is gateway ready ? correct ?

yes 4.1 to 4.5 is gateway compatible

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this as I did not go thorugh every page but I just bought a 3ds XL from target and it has the © 2012 on the box but it has firmware 6.1.0-12U on it. bummed. Is there any other way to tell by looking at the box?

Also wanted to add that my serial number starts with SW132

usually you gotta check both 2012 and serial start with SW12XX or lower on the box to get a better idea of the firmware is lower than 4.5. Tho that sucks to get a 6.1

on a 2012 one!

I am going to target to return the 3ds xl and see what serial number they have in inventory.. If they don't have what I am looking for I am going to Walmart to see what they have.

I bought the target 3ds xl for 149 black Friday special and might have to pay 30 dollars more going elsewhere. oh well.

I went to target and found there last 12xx serial number.

I saw a black 3ds with a serial number that started with a 401xx. Anyone know if that 3ds is old or new?

The higher the serial number the newer it is.

on black friday my friend picked up a Red/Black Serial Number SW11XXXXXXX with 2012 on the box and it was at 4.4 and this was at Target. I bought it off him for the $165 he paid when he was going to return it.

Blue/Black XL - 2012 Low Serials will have 4.X - Unless someone opened it and updated or switched it
Red/Black XL - 2012 Low Serials will have 4.X - Unless someone opened it and updated or switched it
Black/Black XL - Will not have 4.X

Just got an red SW12309 one from Walmart. They had about 2 dozen red ones and the blue ones were SW106 and they had about a dozen of those. The one I got has a firmware of 4.4 and until December 12th you also get a $40 gift card for Walmart if you purchase a 3DS, 3DS XL, or a 2DS. WORTH IT.
