Pretty sure that Game and Game Station are two different chains. *ninja'd*
they are both owned by GAME Group plc.
Interesting! In the area where I lived for some time both were very competitive againts eachother. Wool over the customer's eyes?

No wool pulling, Game bought out Gamestation when they went through an expansion phase, but, due to bad management they didn’t close stores that were near to each other and ended up competing with themselves. Where I live they have two Game stores and a Game Station within a few minutes’ walk of each other.

One of the shops is right next to a CEX (Second hand hardware, phones, games and films) and their second hand games are usually half the price of those in Game, and they both buy them for roughly the same from the customers. Game and Gamestation also usually sell games at the RRP, not many other shops do now.

To be honest they were really badly managed as a company, the quote in the news from one of the people in charge was they were victims of how bad the games industry was doing at the moment, that was right next to a news article on how the games industry is currently doing better than the film industry, sounds like someone who doesn’t even know their own business.

Very similar to aroundmy work, Well i work in a CEX and in theres a game round the corner from us and a gamestation not even 5 mins away :/ the gamestation is shutting down but tbh why would someone go to GAME and pay 43 quid odd for a game they can get in my store for 35? CEX and other pre owned stores really are amazing! Some great bargins if you shop around. As for trade ins we give a good 10-20% more than game/gamestation so there not even getting the stock :/

I feel bad for those people who lost their jobs due to this... Hope they find employment soon. Also as someone else mentioned, I think this downfall was due to bad management. That's almost always the reason for a company of higher-than-average caliber to go down like this.

This is really heart-breaking news to me. My girlfriend has a friend working in Game Station and this basically means lay offs... I hope he's okay, I like him myself.

Must spend my £2.58 of game credit...
I got a couple of DS and 360 games for free (they were being sold for like 2£, like Advance Wars Dark Conflict (always liked this AW the most), and a few others, my games arrived today.

2 stores in Southampton closed ? Hmmm, big surprise - seeing as there's 3 Game stores and 1 gamestation all within spitting distance of each other. It's always seemed a bit daft, even when they were doing well.

I'm sorry for all the people that have lost their jobs though - big shame :(
There used to be 4 GAME stores in Southampton all within walking distance (East St., West Quay, Bargate, Debenhams). I just don't understand what the management was thinking at the time.

Probably thinking more stores, more money.

Well the Cex near me is good for selling stuff to (though face it you can get more as a Amazon Market seller or even on ebay) but awful for buying recently released second hand things. Only last year they were selling loads of used 3DS console for £20 more than most retailers (including Game) were selling for new! Did so for a few weeks.

Also why pay £35 for a used item from Cex when you can get the same game from an online retailer brand new? For example a used Kid Icarus 3DS at the Cex near me £30...Amazon/Play £29.99 free delivery. Its a bit of a piss take to not even knock a couple of quid off for a used game. I guess these stores are more aimed at the less savvy gamer.

Isn't Play shipping from the Jersey Islands ie. no tax is payed for the orders? That's one way to make the products cheaper :P

(Usually I order all my games via Amazon/Play/TheHut because the things cost about 60% of the prices I'd pay in stores here)

Wow! I forgot about the Debenhams branch. That makes it even more retarded,

It is all a bit mad, we had both GAME and Gamestation, 2 mins walk apart and my town isn't even that big.

Gamestation stopped stocking preowned PS2 titles when our CEX opened so I just assumed they were owned by the same company and shifted their preowned stock into the new shop, hm maybe not then. As for CEX they're great for PS2 stuff (found We Love Katamari in there a few weeks back

Yeah its pretty much like this in all towns.

Gamestation was great but then it stopped doing retro stuff, the oldest console they would cover now is PS2 and they stopped doing GC/Xbox/GBA in the last year near me.
