I have a fully working Sega Mega CD right beside me.
Guess what game is in it :)

At least I can get the game for my iPod.
Even though the touch controls will be terrible.
I've got Sonic 2 on my iPod, so I know what I'm talking about...

Agree.

i have this game on the sonic gems collection (ps2) so i don't see the point of paying again to play it.
Because it features both the US and the EU/JP soundtracks, it sports the Sonic 2 style spindash and camera (both optional), Tails is a playable character, and there will be achievements that encourage players to explore all the zones' ages. It adds more replay value, as if there wasn't enough. Not to mention that there is no hack of Sonic CD (besides Sonic CD++ which has the camera and spindash options) which incorporates any of these elements. The port was a single-man job, believe it or not, using a fan-made Sonic engine that perfectly replicates the Sonic Cd engine. This allows for it to be optimised for many platforms, and not dependant on emulation like previous releases. I'd pay $30 for it, $5 is a steal, especially when you consider how much it once cost to acquire the hardware that let you play this game when it was released.

If this comes to PC, I'll get it. Hopefully my little old netbook can handle it and if not I'll just have to get it on my droid until I get a new PS3
You could try out fangames such as Retro Sonic and Sonic Nexus (newer versions). They're running on Taxman's Retro Engine, which is what this version of Sonic CD is also running. It's not a sure scenario that you can run it, but a good indication. I'd imagine this Sonic CD version would have somewhat similar requirements at least. I had no issues running Taxman's game or the games using Retro Engine on an old ass Pentium III laptop @1ghz. I'm sure your netbook is far superior to that.

It's well known that the file size limit for WiiWare games is 40 megabytes. Sonic CD on the Sega CD (Japanese soundtrack) is 181 megabytes. Simply put, it wouldn't fit without heavy modifications. For example, the soundtrack would likely have to be scrapped and replaced with a sequenced version (apparently the Wii version of Sonic 4 used a sequenced soundtrack unlike the other versions which used a streaming one). That would be plausible, but it would just sound like complete ass and require more effort than they're likely to put into it. But even then, the base ISO file not even including the soundtrack is still about 116 megabytes, i'm guessing due to the video files or something (perhaps even the past soundtrack, which is contained in the actual ISO and isn't split into separate sound files, not sure). So it's still somewhat of a problem.

Suffice to say, won't work. The 3DS on the other hand is another story. No such limitation. I'm not sure what the limit is, but it's at least around 200MB or bigger. Gameloft's Lets Golf 3D was larger than Sonic CD. But i guess it won't happen. Perhaps it would take too much effort for them to alter the game to support the 3D effect between background layers...

N64 games aren't big at all. And it should come as no surprise that a CD would hold more than an old N64 cartridge (this was before modern handhelds used flash based memory and before large cartridges were available or affordable). A CD can hold up to about 700MB. The largest N64 games i've ever seen are 64MB, i'm not aware of any notable ones that are on a larger size (if any at all). And there are only a very tiny amount of 64MB N64 games. Conker 64 and Resident Evil 2 both used 64MB cartridges. Most were on less than 32MB. There are no 64MB N64 games on the Virtual Console. Paper Mario is probably the largest game on the N64's VC at 40MB. And that places it right within that limit (they may have applied some compression as well).

If you're in the US like your flag shows, then you won't be getting it until December 20th. Europe is getting it tomorrow.

Well, at least they've finally started to put some effort into it.

Still, I would hardly call a port of a 15 or so year old game as a sign of "the dark age of Sonic" ending; you might want to wait until Sega starts making new games that are consistently good.

sorry i got the n64 graphics mixed up with cartrage size for some reason.
& yes it would be beast if they made sonic cd for 3DS 3d classics.

So when I found out about this, it said two things
1. Sega is trying to probe their customers to see what type of sonic game they should release next
2. Sega is trying to recover from Sonic Generations not being the hit (i think it ought to be)

Does anyone know which if either is right (with the current state of affairs with sega)?

SEGA are definitely trying to recapture Sonic's past success after the last decade of half assed Sonic games that did nothing to capture what Sonic gameplay is really about. They've even gone as far as to wipe some of the bigger failures from their catalogue such as Sonic 06. They're slowly beginning to learn, but are still not quite "getting it" (see Sonic 4 and its lack of momentum based gameplay).

Sonic Generations was actually a very successful release for SEGA. It was the highest pre-ordered Sonic title of all time and received mostly glowing reviews.

All in all, it's really taken the core fans to show SEGA what Sonic should be. Remember this release is built on what was once a fan made retro game engine that was shown to and subsequently picked up by SEGA. Hopefully we'll see it have some influence on the direction they take Episode 2, but I wouldn't hold my breath - I don't see how they can change Sonic 4 gameplay too drastically without somehow doing something to update or retcon Episode 1.

Anybody's got an idea when it's going to be released there?
