    Mesh names don't dictate object order. (In other words) Don't rename meshes, that messes up object order.     Yes that's when it's joined :) Did you make sure to select your model before the smash model? it's important to do that so it keeps the name, rigging, and object order of the smash model.

    Make sure you select your model with right click first then hold shift while you right click the smash model. Then you use control + j to join them

    I believe you can do Mario, just takes a bit more effort but I'm not 100% sure auto Cloud is broken, no model imports for him right now sry auto Nice!

    The dae thing is a max only issue, that happens in max for me too but not in blender.
