There's a linked NNID. He can contact Nintendo Support.

Good to know. Thanks for sharing. I dont think he want to. He wants to keep it, obviously. Can't blame him. Thats his choice.

I also found the wallets with money in it, I think, it was a long time ago and driver license was also in it and I bring it to the house near by and nobody was home so I left it there hoping that someone will be home and found it.

People gotta be careful not to lose anything. Some people found it with name and address and wont returned it and they decided to keep it. That's cowardly things to do. Crazy.

This is the sad truth, though it doesn't make it right.

Do what you want with lost property, I guess. If it gets found out, then the "justice system" (lol, yeah right) will take care of you.

There is nothing for the "justice system" to take care of because it is LEGALLY not stealing and you can't be charged with such. Everyone saying it's technically stealing, I half agree with you. But everyone is missing the point that it's not LEGALLY stealing. Unless the guy that lost it lied to the police and told them that his backpack was stolen, then the OP would never get charged, even if he gets caught without turning it in. And to the guy saying, "let's just take the car on the streets." If the keys are in it and the doors are unlocked, you wouldn't get charged with grand theft, you'd get charged with joy riding.

I don't care how many of you think it's stealing. Having a thought doesn't put people in jail. If the OPs story is 100% accurate and the guy who lost it isn't a liar, no theft has occurred.

Only here people could think that finding something on the side of the road is stealing. You guys will literally go to any lengths to tear people down, won't you? I doubt the guy could return the switch even if he wanted to. I mean, its not like your address and phone number are registered to your account. How would he even find the original owner? Put up a Craig's List ad? ....please. The guy is homeless, down on his luck, and probably couldn't return the system to its rightful owner even if he wanted to. Admit it, if you morons found a Switch lying around, you'd keep it too, so don't try to act holier-than-thou.

Maybe this guy is a troll, maybe he is a liar, maybe not. I don't know him at all so I wont judge him, but lets face it... Most of the people here freaking out and calling this guy a "common thief" based on the tiny bit of info they actually know.... just stop. I'm willing to bet that the majority of you still live under mommy and daddy's financial security blanket, and have no clue just how tough it is to be on the street. So many people here are such assholes these days. I'm starting to remember why I don't come here frequently any more....

EDIT: Here's an example of what I mean. Let's say you're walking down the street, and you see a $100 bill blowing down the sidewalk. You pick it up. Is that stealing too? I mean, it was someone else's $100 bill at one point. Would you go to the police station and try to find the original owner? Of course not... There is a LARGE difference between finding something that isn't yours, and stealing it.
Yeah 100 dollar bills have personal information on them and you can tell who they belong too. And generalizing? If found a Switch I would definitely try to return it to whoever first. If no one manages to claim it, then I guess I would keep at that point. Just making an attempt would be nice instead of not trying at all. It sounds more like this OP has greed, rather than being an "Honest man." An honest man would get more joy out of bringing it back to the owner than they would trying to pry their information off and keep the game with it.
-
Anyways, this sounds like 100% BS. He stole a Switch and now he wants the account info off without losing the $20 game. Why does anyone believe this?

hey there. nice to meet you all. i hope i have posted this in the appropriate section of the forums, if i haven't please feel free to move it, and know that i am sorry.

im recently homeless, and in the first couple of weeks of my freezing cold, north-easterly homelessness, i've had my only valuable possession stolen. this possession being an un-activated iphone 4 with no attached phone plan (i can't afford one, i just used wifi in places i could loiter in for some time)... this was stolen earlier this week. or lost. probably stolen, this isn't a nice area and i normally pay attention to the thing with my life. so, yeah.

so on my way back from being fired from a new job (we try! we really do. we're not all bums, though sometimes we're forced to be to scrape by) im coming to the realization that my 'phone' may be gone for good when i found a bag full of clothing *run over* on the side of the street. inside of this bag? new clothing with tags on it, and a god damned nintendo switch, with all of the accessories, the carrying case, and two games, all un-damaged (mario kart /and/ pokken tournament? thank you, karma. we can be cool again)

now, i've since created my own mii on the switch so i can play mario kart as a little tiny 'me', but i see rocket league installed on here as well from the previous owner. as much as i want to make this great gift my very own, log in with the nintendo account i just made, and all that nice stuff... i really want to know--because i am quite worried:

- deleting this guy's account will delete rocket league, right? (rocket league is soo good. im enjoying it more than the two cartridge games that came with this thing. i don't think i could bear to lose it)
- logging into my brand new nintendo account on this console-- with their account still on here, might this set off red flags? i'd assume so. if i delete the account, then log in with my own nintendo account, could i be blacklisted somehow if he reports the thing 'stolen'? (looked to me like he left it in a bag of cool new stuff he had on top of his car, and then drove off and over it. far from stolen... more like neglected, don't you think? no big deal for him-- he has cool stuff. like a car. and a home. but i have a nintendo switch for now, and that's okay until things get better. :) ) (sorry, trying to justify myself. i'd normally track down the owner and give it back, but right now this is my only [and prized] possession. i cherish it like a gift. i apologize again. i am so sorry.) (p.s. the cardboard box the switch likely came in was not in the fancy-clothing-store-bag he ran over)

what is one to do? i know i am a big, fat jerk for keeping this thing. i really am. but someone else is keeping my phone. and when i get back on my feet... maybe i'll track this guy down and give it back. i even wrote down the address nearest where i found the run-over shopping bag. but right now? i need something to make me smile. things were getting pretty hopeless when fate dropped this magical gift in my lap. so tell me...

in keeping this thing (for now), what would you do? how would you do it? and what can nintendo do to me and my new baby in doing so?

p.s. i've had this for a few days now. i am not using this guy's account, logging into it for any reason, touching or (actually, i haven't even checked if his credit card information is in here) utilizing any of his information-- i want nothing to do with it. i am an honest man, not a thug. that's not even to mention how far that may swing my karma back in the wrong direction for me. i'm no criminal. just a lucky, albeit homeless, dude. please do not judge. please do not make this thread a moral back-and-forth, as easy as that might be to do. just let me know what i can do with my gift from (above?) the side of the road.

thank you all and god bless you all
See if the guy's email address is listed anywhere on the Switch. If it is, contact him. If it isn't then look up his username online, see if you can find a Facebook or Twitter or something similar where you can get in touch with him. I won't judge you for keeping it but you ought to at least make an attempt to find the owner, it's the right thing to do.
Turning it in to the police probably won't do much good. They are not going to attempt to find the original owner, they rely on the owner getting in touch with them, which chances are won't happen.

Only difference here is that a dollar bill doesn't have a user account attached to it with a perfectly functional customer support.
If you're going with the "finding money" example, a credit card would be much better here, since it has both, and of course you're gonna return it instead of using it.
Uhh. Credit card isn't a great example either. Any semi-intelligent person would deactivate the card the MOMENT they lose it. Also please keep in mind that assuming this person is telling the truth, he is homeless and has no phone, remember? How is gonna call customer support? Stand in the library for 6 hours on hold? Possession is 9/10ths of the law, as they say. This person has broken no laws.

Greedy? Assuming this isn't a troll.... HE'S HOMELESS. Ofc hes probably a little greedy, I would be too in that situation. See my above statement regarding the attempt to return it. You're right. An honest person would try to return it.... but just because he's not the man-of-the-year doesn't make him a thief, aka, criminal.

EDIT: I find it funny there is so much hate over the "stolen" Switch, but not 1 person here has complained about him "stealing" the cloths that were also in the bag. Cloths are expensive too....

Theft is theft. The main subject of the post is the Switch. Pay attention.

This is NOT theft. No laws were broken. Calling customer support is retarded too. No customer support line is going to give ANY caller personal information about their customers. That's retarded.

Yep, can't help but notice the one's saying it's stealing are giving no explanation as to how it is actually stealing. They're just saying stealing is stealing and that's that.

Probably because they don't understand the law at all and just wanna sound like a smart / good person online. Go outside once and a while kids, you might learn something.

....EVERYONE here? You're (plural) calling a person a thief... a thief is a criminal.
Nope. You're wrong.
A concept doesn't need to be legally normed for it to exist.
And morals and law are not the same.
The discussion here is not about what the legal system will decide to do with you (law), but in any case about how you're supposed to behave in society, about guilt, and about how your pairs will respond to your actions.
You're reading the answers in this thread in a wrong way.

@Kefka It is stealing. Punished by law or not. If I did it myself I would feel ashamed of someone finding out. If I knew someone did that, I will certainly not look them in good eyes, I will not trust this person.

As a homeless person, he is not a thief, I never said that. He didn't steal it, but he could always return it.
As a liar, trying to make a fake story so he gets attention called, I did call him a thief.

I remember when my JP 3DS was lost/stolen last year and an NNID was linked to it, no one bothered emailing they found my 3DS. I lost all my saves and it was a special colored New 3DS XL that is not available in North America. I wish someone would have emailed me. It's the simplest and easiest thing to do. Wish everyone could follow your solution @The Real Jdbye

Op. Return the switch. Be nice and empathetic with the person who lost their switch. Not only did they lose their money, but they just lost the time and effort spent playing games on it. They lost their saves and (if incomplete) have to restart. Just imagine losing over 150 hrs in Breath of the Wild. It's not fun.

I never said he should call them. And with the resources he used to post here, he can email them.
