Hacking Gateway on 11.6 sysNand (with Luma)?

I've recently updated from gateway setup to luma and updated the firmware.
While trying to migrate I learned that gateway saves are encrypted and will need gateway to decrypt, so now I'm trying to find out just what I would have to do to convert save files.

With that in mind I was wondering if it's possible to boot into gateway mode while still on 11.6 sysNand.
If not, can I downgrade using backup of sysnand I made with GodMode9 while on 9.2?

PS: It seems like every time I come back to my 3ds (roughly 6 months after forgetting about it), gateway-3ds managed to send me on an adventure.

Make an emuNAND and downgrade it with your sysNAND backup.

Follow this to get Gateway working https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-using-luma3ds-gateway-on-b9s.431691/

Follow this to extract your save files https://gbatemp.net/threads/importing-gateway-saves-to-cia-games.425743/

Maybe realise it is time to stop using Gateway then :-p

Follow this to get Gateway working...

I'm a little alarmed by how that guide has that large warning not to boot into gateway with sysnand 11.6
Does setting up emunand make it safe to boot gateway, even with sysnand 11.6?

Or can I boot from downgraded emunand directly into gateway mode? I'm a little confused on this part, because I couldn't boot into gateway using homebrew from Luma on sysnand 9.2 (which I did prior to luma) and if I got it correctly gateway payload (.firm) is the thing that removes the bootstrap on latest firmwares.

If you are using GW with SysNAND, the launcher will warn you and ask you to press R + L + START to continue. If you are booting to GW emuNAND it will boot directly into it. You're in a kind of sticky situation right now and will want to take all the steps cautiously.

When I changed over I had to wipe my entire SD card, so I made sure to create an emuNAND and unlink from sysNAND before upgrading to 11.6 so I could still keep around a GW EmuNand and use the card. I hate how the guide tells everyone to update during the process because GW users like us can end up in your situation.

You will need do as Quantumcat recommended, restore your emuNAND backup from your 11.2 sysNAND, however I'm not sure if this will cause any fallout since your sysNAND and emuNAND will be linked once again.

It won't matter if they are linked. Just means any installed games in sysNAND will show up in emuNAND as well.

That's only for booting into sysNAND, as it will cause B9S to be wiped. emuNAND is completely isolated from sysNAND so you don't need to worry as long as you make sure you have a valid emuNAND before you boot GW mode.
Also, rather than following that guide to convert your GW saves, using this tool is much quicker since it requires no manual renaming of files (my version in post #2 saves another few seconds with a modded JKSM): https://gbatemp.net/threads/gateway-save-export-helper.465503/

Indeed. The only thing they have to worry about with linked NANDs is the gift wrapping bug, and also that formatting emuNAND will cause the NNID to be unlinked from the console which will break anything that relies on NNID login on sysNAND until they relink the NNID to emuNAND.

I took a little gamble (or at least I thought I did, because I didn't find a lot of answers I was looking for online) and ended up with sysNAND and gw-emuNAND both working on 11.6
As long as everything works, I'll probably stick to gateway as a test platform for games so I don't have to waste that much time on transferring games into internal SD.

So yeah, in case someone has the same question as I did: It is absolutely safe installing 11.6 emunand on top of 11.6 luma (AFTER TransferCTR, i.e. after you can boot into luma without internal SD).
..The only thing they have to worry about with linked NANDs is the gift wrapping bug...

If this is the only problem that comes from linked NANDs then I can live with that :D

By the way, thanks for the pointers so far - they were helpful ^_^

Here you go. I also uploaded it into 3ds-savegames website, but I probably still can't post links (and it's not gonna be up for a while).

Let's be honest, though, the (up to) 10min game transfer time to (externally accessible) gateway SD is just so much more convenient than the CIA (possibly including .3ds ==> .cia) process and transfers to internal SD (which is annoying to extract on N3DS due to screws).
That's even worse when you get a batch of games you just want to try and will probably not keep, in which case it takes longer to transfer the game than you spend playing it.

With that said, I'm happy with a dual setup, because both Luma and gateway offers something the other doesn't. Also, I'm really happy to get my gateway cheat menu back (it's a bit odd that with all the breakthroughs there's no cheat menu around, not even on another flashcart....).

Yup, I mainly put any offline single player games 1GB or larger on the GW card, everything else can be installed/downloaded as CIA through Freeshop/CiAngel. The only exclusions are games like Pokemon or others that I may use for online, even though MK7 is the only game I've ever played online, years ago by now, anyway haha.

Or you could do what 99% of the population does and use freeShop. This has the extra benefit of not having to navigate sites full of ads and malware. Would end up faster once you add in time for browsing those sites, transfer time to the microSD, and the fact that 3ds files are larger than their cia equivalent so the download time is longer. And you're winning with freeShop in terms of time as soon as you accidentally download a non working 3ds file, or get infected with malware. Things taking less time with a 3DS flashcart is a myth.

You're absolutely right about FreeShop. That said, there's a thousand other ways of getting 3ds files and more than a few of them don't involve going to the various emu/iso-like shitter sites. Shit, usenet alone covers every base and you don't even need to open a fucking browser for it.

I've got a 1GBit pipe here - finding, downloading and transferring to SD for a Gateway is ABSOLUTELY faster than using FreeShop...MUCH faster, simply by virtue of Japan's inexplicable insistence on using ancient wireless spec. That said, WiiU USB Helper is a thing, offers up CIAs and you get the best of both worlds - provided you don't mind popping the rear panel off the 3DS. Course, the screws on that thing are kinda shit and using FTP still runs into the wireless transfer limitations of the 3DS.

And you're winning with freeShop in terms of time as soon as you accidentally download a non working 3ds file, or get infected with malware. Things taking less time with a 3DS flashcart is a myth.

Agree, but that has nothing to do with cia vs 3DS and everything to do with folks paying a stupid tax for not understanding how to internet (for those of us old fuckers, I guess this is our edge). The reality is, for the average Joe, using FreeShop is perfect if they don't mind waiting on the download. If they're truly impatient, WiiU USB works. Gateway 3DS loading is a distant third option for the masses. But that in no way, shape or form means it's a "myth". Your point could've been made without the unnecessary hyperbole.
