Like I said, we need a clear methodology. A few responses scattered throughout the tread is completely different from a single post that lists from start to finish all activity and steps you have done that you believe might be relevant, and list any possibilities that you have considered and have eliminated. Right now the only theory we have now is a scheduled notification, with very slight possibility that you plugged the Switch into the TV to play a game and didn't use a USB controller.

Here's the thing: the internet is a big place, full of people ranging from competent to very very stupid. We only have your word.

That being said, this issue is only as big as you make it. I'm invested solely because I'm curious and I believe you're withholding some important details, which others may be terrified of the prospect of their Switch updating automatically and taking their very slim chance of homebrew away.

I haven't played on TV. Only in handheld. Other people have experienced this too. I'm just wondering how it connected to the network without "a network"

I don't see where we can start diagnosingthis without others' experiences first. Even so, they're very likely the same experience. Where do we go from here?

Makes me wonder if it's something silently introduced with 4.0? Hm

Teardowns don't reveal an LTE/cellular modem so we don't have to worry about that. Silently disabling Airplane mode would be a major no-no that I doubt Nintendo would even try.

I think realistically we only have two options:

1. the Switch IS connecting to the internet without user knowledge, either by a bug in Airplane mode/network forgetting or by user error.

2. The update was already downloading and waiting to install, possibly an unrelated one.

3. Scheduled update notifications.

Honestly unless we get more information I think the latter is far more plausible. In which case I have to ask these questions:

1. How persistent is the notification? Does it block playing games until you update? Can you dismiss it permanently or does it constantly pop up?

2. When did everyone first start seeing the update notice? About the same time?

3. Now that we have 4.1, what happens if you set airplane mode then set your Switch's internal clock to some time in the future? Does it give another update notice?

I think they have made some kinds of "time-bomb" in 4.0.0. After a certain time after the system updated, there will be a countdown of how long the Switch has been offline. After the countdown reached zero, it will display update nag to encourage (or something like that) users to connect the Switch to internet and check for real update.

Checking that would be pretty annoying if it's not connected to system time. You'd have to turn on airplane mode shortly after updating and then wait for a new update to come out - and there's no guarantee that Nintendo will schedule a 4.1.1 or 4.2 update.

Wait, AFAIK the Switch keeps track of two different clocks/dates.
The date the user can set up and see, and the real date (or something approximated to that) that is synchronized with network time when connected to the internet, and that keeps counting on its own the "approximate real date/time" while offline, no matter what the user does.
This second clock starts going on after the first time you connect to the internet, you can see this is the case with the conditions required to trigger the Iwata Golf Game.

This second clock would be really useful to trigger time bombs, as it is unaffected by whatever the user does with the system date configuration.

I thought long and hard before posting on this thread after seeing the grief that the op has received (unfairly)

I had a similar thing happen myself 2 days back

My neon switch is the one i keep connected and updated and use for playing Mario... I play in TV mode always and when I finish playing I pause the game, hit home menu and put it into sleep mode each time

We changed isp about 4 days back so this Switch hadn't been connected to the net but on Wednesday (even though the old router was even plugged in and no connection available to it) it started prompting for an update, totally weird huh ?

I dunno what's going on but Nintendo defo seem to be up to something

I vaguely recall something about switches updating system and game titles on their own ad hoc. I'd think disabled wireless would still have Bluetooth active as well. Haven't read all circumstances but they probably do a lot in their sleep that we wouldn't know about yet. Otherwise, Idk therefore aliens. :)

could the Joycons somehow cause it ?
why not... not enough info has been provided yet, and sure the joycons can hold information, perhaps the last console they were connected/synched to wrote the current firmware version number into it, and so the joycon alerts another console when connected to it... it is not something impossible to implement.

wow that is nuts yo, i have not turned on my switch for a month now i think.

i never set up anything on it , so i will test it out to see if i will also get a update pop up!

edit: i am itching to just use my switch, but i won't update just yet.
if only Nintendo gave us a browser and some sort of theme support + changing the menu layout , i would then update instantly.

i do not want too much on it i guess, buying only the games you really want is all you need.
would not be spending a fortune on games, because there are not many i would want to be honest, i am just still waiting for SMT V and would defintely buy any tales game that comes for the switch.

well, i will see how it goes.
for now i will keep mine the way it is, but if SMT V or a Tales or any other game that i absolutely must play came out tomorrow , i would update the thing.
it sure is meant to be used like i many times read in many threads.

but , there are just no games that make me update for now, but like i stated above, if we even just get a browser (obviously with video support etc.) ,i'll then update.

Stuff like that comes and goes in life, "I want Homebrew, no wait um... Actually I want to play this game but I can't. Well, I can get a second switch! No wait, I can't, GR! Hm.... Well these games are only on it and I can play some on PC, meh I will wait awhile *a week later.* Pfft, so bored of Steam. This Switch has just been sitting in my closet and now I feel bad because I haven't updated it for 3 months and want Homebrew on it. Wait am I some type of weirdo who just bought a Nintendo Switch and just wanted Homebrew? OMG I HAVE TO UPDATE. *updates*, ah I feel much better about myself. (A few days pass by) Man now I regret updating, maybe I should do this to get a second switch again, but the games there all 59.99, UGH... Well, I will just buy a Wii U and sell my PS2, wait I don't want to sell my PS2 because..." etc,

Some people really seem to care and others don't really care to much, some would rather own the latest model of a Audi for example over a gaming PC.

Well Back then I bought a 3DS and didn't turn it on for years until gateway came. I bought resident evil just because it brought the 2nd analog stick and I'm still to play it :(...

Anyway I almost can't afford Switch but I really enjoy games, I can sadly only buy one when the securities can be bypassed...

My favourite PC game is Squad and I paid like 20 eur or less for the most realistic FPS experience ever.

Last PC game I bought was quite a few months ago, Rising Storm Vietnam also a kinda realistic fps and cost less than 6eur for a top game that is better made than Battlefield 1.

I bought Uncharted on the PS4 for almost the full price and totally regret wasting a full week of my job on that game :(.

Around 2eur per hour job is not very pleasant to see almost any crap game at 70eur (specially when there are thousands and thousands of games to play mixed with PC, Android, ps4.......) to have sometimes 1 or 2 hours of fun and a lot of hours of annoyance, most games I buy disappointed me so much for the god damn hard hours I had to work to pay them...

I have brought my daughter a switch for xmas, i believe its the Mario Odyssey bundle. This thread has got me thinking about never connecting it to a network now.

Cmon hackers crack this thing already :)

I know the Wii U took ages as did the PS3 so i do realize this things happen eventually but if theres some sneaky shit going on in the background, we need a full hack soon so we can put an end to it :0
