Nintendo release breakfast cereal with amiibo functionality

Nintendo and Kelloggs have teamed up to take fans on a breakfast odyssey that will continue long after the cereal box is empty. In addition to collectable Super Mario Odyssey box art, each Super Mario Cereal box functions as an amiibo accessory, making breakfast a more playful experience.

“This powered-up partnership with Kellogg’s is another exciting way for us to expand the Nintendo brand in unique and creative ways,” said Tom Prata, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Strategic Initiatives. “We are always looking for new opportunities to bring smiles to people of all ages, and this is a fun way to kick off the day.”

The limited-edition cereal box will begin hitting store shelves across the U.S. as early as Dec. 11. Those playing the Super Mario Odyssey game can tap the cereal box on the Nintendo Switch system, like you would an amiibo, to receive gold coins or a heart in the game. Even the cereal itself has a Super Mario twist, with colorful power-up marshmallows and a blast of mixed berry flavor in every box.

“We are thrilled to pack so much fun into one box of cereal,” said Brad Schwan, Senior Director of Morning Foods Marketing. “The package adds value and excitement for fans, with marshmallow shapes in the cereal inspired by Super Mario power-ups to tie the theme together.”

oh so the technology is small and inexpensive enough to be on cereal boxes, all this does is bring attention to the fact that amiibo figures are pointless and overpriced

btw what's with the meme regarding the bad taste of Nintendo switch cartridges, like since when do people put games in their mouth to taste them? o.O
How did this become a thing..

edit: It also means you can no longer buy Switch games used, unless you want something that someone put in their damn mouth.
edit: or their dog's mouth...

They're a little more expensive to make when they've got the actual figurine on top of the NFC tag, but yes, obviously Nintendo makes a profit on these. Pretty much all of mine I've got at under $10.

I don't know when people started tasting carts, but the meme is because they put a bitterant on Switch carts to keep young children from swallowing them (because they're so tiny).

Still ridiculous
It's actually very practical compared to making an entire figure. A lot of people who like amiibo are collecting them, so they either don't open them or they put them on a shelf somewhere. Having the NFC tags (like the sticker ones) allows things like amiibo cards giving people an easy and cheap way to use amiibo for the actual game bonuses. It can also reduce the amount of rare or limited edition amiibo because they can just print mass amounts of cards. It also allows for a much bigger selection compared to making a figure that you have to base on a popular character because the cards would be very cheap to manufacture so worrying about sales isn't as big of an issue.

Nintendo has got their A-Game going. A lot of kids will see this and ask for a switch for Christmas just to use that box. It's an excellent idea.
