Nintendo release breakfast cereal with amiibo functionality

Nintendo and Kelloggs have teamed up to take fans on a breakfast odyssey that will continue long after the cereal box is empty. In addition to collectable Super Mario Odyssey box art, each Super Mario Cereal box functions as an amiibo accessory, making breakfast a more playful experience.

“This powered-up partnership with Kellogg’s is another exciting way for us to expand the Nintendo brand in unique and creative ways,” said Tom Prata, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Strategic Initiatives. “We are always looking for new opportunities to bring smiles to people of all ages, and this is a fun way to kick off the day.”

The limited-edition cereal box will begin hitting store shelves across the U.S. as early as Dec. 11. Those playing the Super Mario Odyssey game can tap the cereal box on the Nintendo Switch system, like you would an amiibo, to receive gold coins or a heart in the game. Even the cereal itself has a Super Mario twist, with colorful power-up marshmallows and a blast of mixed berry flavor in every box.

“We are thrilled to pack so much fun into one box of cereal,” said Brad Schwan, Senior Director of Morning Foods Marketing. “The package adds value and excitement for fans, with marshmallow shapes in the cereal inspired by Super Mario power-ups to tie the theme together.”

I can see someone just walking through the grocery store with their phone or other device and dumping all the RFID data from all the boxes and making spoofed cards.

Hopefully that is what happens. People will buy these is mass and scalp online so dumps will eventually be the only cost effective way to aquire the cards.

actually, it is, for people of my age
seriously, when you grew up with NES and SNES, there was no such promotionnal item in that time
I did grow up in that era. Did you? If you actually did, then maybe you'd remember this:

Anyways, this comment-chain is not about promotional tie-in cereal, but sweet cereal. Original commenter believes this cereal to be unappealing due to containing sugar--its what plants kids crave. You're not gonna get kids eating Super Mario Flavorless Flakes. They want Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs

yea well... personally I live in quebec. Quebec wasn't really reputed as a great client back in those years
I mean, we were a population of only 7M back then and that isnt a very large target businessly talking.
That's because of the law about French Language, stating that everything must be translated in french in quebec. And even then, video games werent translated, politician were tolerant about that, but I guess it was too much to ask company to translate their product for only 7M of people.
In short, there was no such promotional item back in 90's

Plus, due to the lack of internet popularity back then, we had no real online market to buy these thing from other country.
Internet became a thing in Quebec only at the beginning of 2000's
