Yooka-Laylee Gets Nintendo Switch Release Date

YookaSwitch.jpg

Backers rejoice! Almost seven months after other systems, Playtonic's crowd funded collect-a-thon Yooka-Laylee finally drops for Nintendo Switch on the 14th of December. It comes boasting polish and optimisation for play on the go, as well as support for playing with a single Joy-Con across each of its eight multiplayer minigames for an optimal fun to budget ratio. This release is exclusively digital, with plans for a Switch physical edition unknown at this time.

Will you be picking this up when it launches?

Update:
The price has been revealed to be £34.99 on the UK eShop, in line with the retail price on Steam.

From afar the box art from that picture looks like doom :P

Anyways, is this game any good? I hoped for a black friday deal but that was not in there...

That's exciting and all, but after Odyssey does anyone really care about this anymore? Pre odyssey I had seen some hype for this, but now that hype seems to have died down. I already played this on the PS4 anyways a while back, so I won't be getting it.
Odyssey is a good game, but I honestly enjoyed both Yooka-Laylee and A Hat in Time more. They hit a nerve that made me 100% them in one go while I have Mario on hiatus right now (I returned to BOTW instead). When it comes to visual style, humor and especially music, I'd argue that Yooka-Laylee is superior. Odyssey has better gameplay, though.

But you are right, the hype has died down and selling it digital only won't help. I'm still glad it comes to Switch, though.
As it got closer to release and major gaming outlets reviewed it, my hype crashed and burned. I have never even touched the game.
Seriously, you haven't even played it just because of reviews? Do yourself a favor and check out this one:

I think it manages to summarize what's wrong with the game (I'm not claiming it's perfect) and explain why it's still awesome.

There were shitty mini games, frustrating mine cart sections and sometimes wanky physics but those won't ruin an otherwise fun and solid title.

But you know, if you didn't even bother to ever finish Banjo, those games might simply not be your cup of tea. Tastes are different, so that's okay, but please stop calling it "trash", especially if you haven't experienced it yourself. I think it's an obvious labor of love by a small team that is not back in the game quite yet.

A little overreaction perhaps, but I also got quite annoyed by them getting on the train of blaming Jontron on all the problems of America to get some cheap PC advertisement, enough to make me go from "it doesn't seem so good, but perhaps I buy this" to "it just lost any appeal it had left".
And I still think Jontron did himself some terrible PR by making said declarations, but so did Playtonic by showing they will try to reach for any opportunity like a vulture ravaging some agonizing leftover prey.

Very interesting interview about YL's "second launch":
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2017-11-28-the-second-launch-of-yooka-laylee

@Foxi4 @sarkwalvein
It was a business decision and it's hard to say if it was a wise one. "Gears for Breakfast" received hate for keeping Jon, Playtonic got shitstormed for removing him - you can't please everyone.

I'm a Jontron fan myself and I keep watching his content (now that he's finally active again), so I wasn't pleased with PT's decision. But it sure as hell didn't ruin the fun I had with Yooka-Laylee.

The game looks like it fell out of a time machine anyways, it's dated and only a shadow of the title it tries to desperately imitate. Without Jontron attached to the game I lost the remainder of interest - his grunts would've been hilarious.

Since we are on the topic, this is what was apparently removed.

In other words it made no difference whatsoever and 99% of people wouldn't have known that was JonTron.
Yeah, they can kiss me where the sun doesn't shine for bailing on Jontron the way they have - I haven't bought this when it was new, I'm not buying it now and I'm not buying any of their future games either, I don't support social justice warriors.
When it bleeds over into the business sector it's no longer about ethics or morality, it's about not taking pointless risks that might lose you money. Even JonTron himself handled this way better than most of his fans did, and I'm not sure why people put YouTubers on a pedestal in the first place. They make mistakes like everybody else.

Exactly, and you have to make a choice as a company, the thing is either choice could be bad. IMHO the one they took was the bad choice and impacted negatively on their sales. No matter how JonTron handled this, the only important thing for the company is how the potential buyers handled this, and if the balance is negative, the choice was bad.

The game is obviously so-so, I don't know that the JonTron decision had a big impact on sales either way. Definitely not as big as its reviews.

There are plenty of good reasons to not buy a game, but "they changed the voice actor for 2-3 lines of dialogue" isn't one of them. Especially when the VO is gibberish anyway.

Yes it is, but with the game being so-so already, and buying it turning out to be only kind of a fan thingy to collect a game with a VO of someone you follow, well, taking him out obviously tips the scale to the "it was bad anyway, so no buy now" side.

If his fans are that petty that's on them. He was the better man in that whole situation. After the fact, anyway, because his deal didn't get pulled for nothing. This happens all the time with celebrities/pro athletes, their endorsements get pulled if they publicly say or do something unacceptable for say, a PG audience. It also wouldn't have been a big deal if there weren't so many articles about it, so certainly part of the "blame" goes to the media, but only if you're needing someone to blame.

the very notion that a game matters solely because of some fat guy on YouTube is a VO sort of cheapens the game as is. I'd argue that the game is better without.

You got the cause-effect reversed, what cheapens the game and makes it depend only on that is that the game is actually bad per se.
If the game was good, nobody would have been looking for some weird reason to actually justify buying it.

Sigh, of course they finnaly give it a release date. I really wanted to try this game on the switch spite it's bad reviews. But I got sick of waiting like many others I'm sure and got it for black Friday for 15 on Xbox. Maybe I'll get it on sale down the road

Ill, want to get it. there is always room for a platformer. But it also comes down what pricetag it will get. I think 19.99 is fair. But then again, that is what Doom and Skyrim should have been in the firsts place.......
