A new Mario movie is in the works

images

It looks like Nintendo has finally decided to greenlight a new Mario movie based on reports from the Wall Street Journal. The deal is said to have been made between Nintendo and Illumination Entertainment, who is known for the Despicable Me franchise and the Secret Life of Pets. The movie will be animated, and so far only one movie is planned (so don't get your hopes up for that Zelda movie just yet). It will be interesting to see how this plays out, especially after how bad 1993's Super Mario Bros. movie went over.

Considering it's being made by a company that felt like Minions were the be all and end all of marketing schemes (which they did seem to take over, you see them literally everywhere), I can't see this being anything better than "good". It might be a "good" movie but I highly doubt it will be a great one. But that's what animation has been dumbed down to in Hollywood, it's all about making mediocre children's movies in CGI and then making it colourful and flashy so they rake in millions of dollars. Write in a few gags both a kid and parent can laugh at and you've got a movie that will bring in $10 million in revenue.

So... Dreamworks essentially?
I seriously hope they don't use their stereotypical "human" models for the Mario movie.
I hate the human design Dreamworks does to the characters, they feel odd and out of place, extremely over the top facial features.

If they maintain the essence of Mario's overall design and model, alongside the corresponding characters, then it'll do fine.

Well, I'm pretty sure it'll use the same art style the games use. If they redesigned Mario at all, there would be an outcry.

I have faith in them. However, I'm still not sure about the Mario movie. Look at how the last Mario movie turned out.
The '96 Super Mario Bros movie was a treasure how dare you

On the subject of a Zelda movie, though, it absolutely would have to be in a Breath of the Wild style for it to work

Illumination?
Gosh darn I hate how they milk the minions, I'm 100% sure they will at least put an easter egg of them in this movie

Needs to be a minion in a Pikachu costume.
I was personally thinking they should bring over the rabbids from Mario and rabbids kingdom battle and let them be in the game with some of them dressed up as minions, but that'll work too!

Mario is already milkable, there's no need to add Minions.
But what are you willing to bet the Goombas will act like Minions? It's a formula that (evidently) works.

Ehh, I doubt they make the guys who are there just to be stomped on by Mario talk. "OH GOD, YOU'RE CRUSHING ALL MY MUSHROOM BONES!" Toads are basically slightly taller talking goombas anyway.
