It seems like a friend of mine bricked his Wii U.
He installed multiple games to an external SSD using WUP Installer GX2.
At one point (after successfully installing a few games) the console had a freeze (while still installing a game).

After launching the console always this is what he gets:
RTarQJ8.jpg

He can't turn the console into soft shut down. He tested everything including inserting/pulling SD card and plug/unplug the external SDD without any differences.

If he goes to "downloads", the console freezes.

When he waits for about 10 to 30 minutes, some icons on the home screen appear again.

He can still access the Internet Browser though which means, all homebrews can still be used.

What can he do to get all his normal homescreen icons back and get the Wii U back into a normal state?

The easiest way I can think of is use a red band and install haxchi on it then update

Do you mean redNAND? I don't see how that would help.
The main problem is, that even the system settings are not accessible so he can't take a look on installed data and stuff.

Hmm this is a very strange situation indead simply because if he was installing to the external drive then nothing on the actual system was being touched. I can only assume that something on the system failed at the point the install was taking place.

Tickets still install on internal memory, maybe something messed up the tickets somehow, I've installed around 300 titles (even stupidly delete legit tickets!) and never had a problem like this. Maybe there's a limit on ticket side? When you get past that limit the Wii U freeze like that? D:

OP it's probably better not messing with Homebrew at this point, but if you can still use HBL you could try boot savemii and see what titles show properly, maybe there's a title corrupted (probably it won't display), but DON'T delete anything from there, just use it to read.

He installed like 10 or 20 games I guess. No limit has been exceeded. :P
As he can still access the internet browser he could launch mocha and then ftpiiu I guess.
This way maybe I can help him by giving him files from my Wii U which are may corrupted on his one?

I wouldn't recomend ftpiiu, if your connection is unstable you probably will end transfer corrupted files.

not sure if this will help, but new "game" installs go here:

Code:
mlc_01/usr/import/00050000/title id

it's a temp folder before going here:

Code:
mlc01/usr/title/00050000/title id

it's probably usb01 for usb. go there with ftpii u everywhere and try deleting the 00050000 folder (only the import one).

Launch HBL through browser, uninstall CBHC if it's installed and try a reformat of the Wii u
He doesn't have CBHC. Just Haxchi.
Oh must have missed that. OP never answered my question about nand backup
Oh sorry, must have missed that. He doesn't have a nand backup.

I don't know what exactly are you trying to tell me with this post. Whether it's that my friend is too stupid or you mean something else, neither is the case. He installed proper dumps via WUP Installer GX2 what almost everybody here is doing and on one of those install processes the Wii U had a freeze and the issue was there. Something that can happen to anyone of us.

Wasn't aware of the temp folder thing so thanks for that info.

However the problem is somehow resolved now. Everytime he installs something new he has to wait for about 3 hours (!) after a reboot until some kind of error message pops up, telling him that there was a problem with his drive (SSD) which can be ignored and then everything seems to work fine. Gladly this only happens when he installs something new and not on every reboot. Seems to be an issue with the SSD. (Anyone else here using a SSD on a Wii U?)
However, he can live with that I guess. Thanks for all your help. :)
