ToeJam & Earl Back In The Groove delayed to 2018!

On November 7, Adult Swim published on their Youtube channel that ToeJam & Earl Back in the Groove will be available for Consoles and PC in 2017. At the end of the video, you can see the duo tease the viewer and rephrase that it will be out in 2018, though no exact date is given. The game is based on the original released in 1991 for the Sega Genesis/Megadrive and is now widely available for all regions on the Playstation Network for PS3 only, Xbox Live for Xbox 360 Only and PC by Steam. (Also was available on Wiishop virtual console)

The new game is developed by HumaNature studios which was built by the original producer of the game Greg Johnson. Going to kickstarted to get this game funded, the game had a successful kickstarter and now teamed up with Adult Swim Games to get it published. The game features the familiar duo ToeJam & Earl who are self proclaimed rap master teenagers who are once again trapped on earth and need to find a way to get back home. Most of the gameplay remains the same "Rogue-Like" RPG style that it was known for before changing is direction with the other two sequels. More features has been added this time around with new playable characters and some returning features.

Rogue-like? o.O
WTF is that?!
Rogue-like refers to games that usually have random generated dungeons, that ensures the player have different experiences of the terrain each time the game is replayed. Is based on a game from 1980 called Rogue and several games have been made like this including Pokemon Mystery dungeon series by Spike Chunsoft, The Binding of Isaac, and Rogue Legacy. In the past sega as also made games based on it such as Dragon's Crystal and Fatal Labyrinth.

Basically the game is played going through multiple floors that are each different every time you start a new game and functions like a rpg with items to pickup and use, and obtaining exp to improve player stats. If you played any of the mentioned games above, that is Rogue Like.

While these are some features of a Roguelike game, that's not all of them, hence, the question. Still, insisting on that question would be the same of arguing about semantics, I was just shocked in seeing that word being used to describe this game from my childhood :)

Sorry, maybe I don't deserve to use that word then but it is how many people explained the original game. It was a game term that was made popular before even "metroid-vania" or "SHMUPS" Is just a common word people use with this game and probably why is became popular and known as that. :P

actually the term for this kind of roguelike like game is "rogue-lite" as it is not a full roguelike but is not too different from one

So do we start using "Metroid-Vania-Lite?" Or metroid-lite?
i dont actually get the reference but that still made me chuckle . . .

its not my term even the rogue legacy game you listed alongside the roguelikes advertises itself as a rogue-like

Well I was using the general reference, while I'm sure people started using "Rogue-Lite" to make a distinction from "Rouge-lite" Is not probably a go to term to describe it. People been calling Toejam and Earl Roguelike since the game came out in 1991 and perhaps that was misused then, but people just continue to use it. If the proper term is Rogue Lite then is just the nostalgia talking that keeps overshadowing the proper term.

Is the same thing that people who call games "Metroid-vania" and misuse the term if is not really considered that in games like Mega man ZX on Nintendo DS, Shantae, Guacemelee, or even Blaster Master (Which is a game that had similar playstyle before metroid vania was ever used)

yeah its often misused like many rpg sub-generas
"Metroid-vania"
oh castlevania now i get it (i am dense)
but its not just that the roguelite is similar to a rogulike but is more of a roguelike-like or a roguelike-lite (hence rogue-lite) than an actual rougelike, often leaving out key components of a roguelike that made the challenge of the game itself, for instance permadeath is missing from rouge legacy and is instead replaced with an family (upgrade) system (so you may not beat it now but you eventually will) effectively stripping away the challenge that a roguelike fan craves

honestly (offtopic but as you brought up metroid-like) i hate this "like" age we seem to be in in the gaming world . . . what ever happened to originality and innovations . . . they seem to have been replaced by sequels and clones . . . and dont even get me started on clones with sequels

Lol, is not off topic, is about the game, is better to have a proper definition of the games features than misleading ones. Also as sad as it is, first impressions play a big role in society and it seem like is never ends. Once someone make a game, they deem it good or bad, then if it is successful, they are held to high expectations and standard as their reputation. If it is deem bad they usually just forget about it. There is companies out there willing to continue developing a series to keep it in a positive spotlight by many means. One of the common ones seem to be regressing to what made it a winner in the first place. This year seemed to be the year of nostalgia for many games, making a old game reinvented to something new with the core intact. I agree this is no exception than to feed nostalgia, it works if done right.

This game in particular had a interesting history. The first game was basically what is referred to as Roguelike (Rogue-lite if people prefer) Where the two characters story has them driving their space ship home and crashing into a asteroid field and falling to earth. The goal here is to collect all 10 pieces of the broken ship across 25 floors to get home. Two modes was here, a fixed mode where is always the same every time you play and random mode where every time you play each floor has random layout of the map and contents. You gain points (EXP) and have a ranking system that is increased by your points, each rank gives you more life (And think also faster movement speed) and sometimes grant extra lives. Items in the form of presents are randomly found and the contents are hidden until opened or taken to a person who can identify them without opening them. Some which are good are also bad and cause bad things to happen. I mentioned that sega also had Fatal Labyrinth and Dragon Crystal that plays much like this, while maybe not exactly a game like rogue it does stem from what made the genre a popular term to use.

The game had a sequel that was supposed to be much like the first but improved and expanded upon. Instead being the game was published by sega, they had the game direction changed to be a 2D platformer because of the overwhelming popularity of the genre at the time and wanted to follow suit. This wasn't the intentional developers decision but conformed to sega's plea anyway. (Honestly I like them both and recommend them.) The third game which was on xbox (one i did not play) was once again ruined by sega's plea for a change of direction. This game is made by the same producer as the first game with the intention of keeping that original style and adding the other content from other games and new stuff in hopes of finally making the game he sought to do before. :)
