Hey everyone, so recently i got a NDSlite at a thrift store, and when I got home i realized that the bottom screen is broken. It was no big deal since i got it for only 5$ but i was wondering, are there any games that mostly use the top screen? I'm just about going to play anything. Or maybe i should just fix it, or use it for parts, or something...
Right now i'm just playing MKDS.

*PLEASE READ*: I'm super new to this website, so if I am doing something wrong, please tell me.

These are the only ones that come into my mind right now, but keep in mind that they use the touch screen for options such as save slot selection and/or main menu navigation in general:

-Mario Kart DS
-New super Mario Bros DS
-Kirby Super Star Ultra

There are means of swapping screens via cheats and hacks. They are not the easiest things to make to work on hardware but there are a few, though most of the ones I have seen have been to use the bottom screen as the top was damaged (if you have a working code though it should be easily adapted). I could also see such a thing being made to work from a button combination so you can hold something to swap and it goes back when you release, or when you next press the combo.
http://gbatemp.net/threads/action-replay-code-to-switch-screens.355486/page-2 has some more.

Second question. Does the touch screen function at all? It should be independent of the display parts of the screen (though if it was something crashing into the screen that damaged it then both could have gone) and that could open up several more options, possibly even resurrecting the analogue ROM hack by doodling where the menu items are on the screen.

I would suggest trying to fix the bottom screen or getting a new one. Both screens are pretty important imo unless you want to play GBA games. You can probably bumble your way into NSMB DS pretty easily like stated above but some games require you to actually touch the touch screen before continuing.

Best bet is fixing the bottom screen. I want to say that if your digitizer works (touch screen part), just buy the actual bottom screen. Just know that you will need to be careful when replacing the screen as you would have to separate the digitizer from the broken screen and you can accidentally damage it. I recommend searching up a tutorial for it. Takes patience but totally worth it :)

Is the screen cracked or just dead?

Before buying parts, might be worth disassembling to see if it's just a loose connection (as unlikely as it may sound).

NSMBDS uses the bottom screen for all underground sections, So I wouldn't recommend for a one screened ds

I made an AR code to swap screens, but it was a little buggy, and required per-game hooks. Ds screens are cheap, but maybe look into another ds with a broken hinge. I got a japanese one on ebay, worked flawlessly aside from a cracked hinge, only $6

...Ah, that sucks. How did that happen? I mean, at least the ds lite are not very expensive atm. If you can, you can always buy another...
Yeah.. I tried to fix it, but i'm horrible at opening stuff and then everything went downhill from there.
Where i live i can get DS systems relatively cheap (15-40$). :nds:

Well at least you can get them cheap, and if not look them up on ebay as well.
