Switch to Linux. Windows 10 is cancer.
While you may be right at some point. The OS won't change shit for the gaming performance. A couple of FPS at best.

My y700 works pretty well after removing all the added bullshit that came loaded on it. Had trouble with skyrim remastered but it runs similar games wonderfully.

My whole philosophy on laptops is that they are something extra to have on hand in case one of my 3 PC's decides to stop functioning. I can use the Laptop to diagnose and download and burn a disk or create a USB boot device...

The whole thing with laptops is that they are portable... I really don't need portability so a desktop makes a lot more sense to me. And with the advent of HDMI and wireless keyboards and mice the portability thing is even less of an issue... My one PC in my living room has 2 wires... (HDMI and Power) If I wanted I could pack it up and move it in a very short time frame. I am of course comparing to years back when you had like 47 wires out the back of your PC... lol

At the OP, you did get ripped off badly :( I can't imagine an APU system for 2000 AUS (I think AUS money is worth more than US money so it's even more ouch.)

If you can't get your money back, I can help a little with your performance issues... Since it's an APU and has Radeon graphics there are some settings you can change to maybe pick up a few more frames. In the lower right hand side of your screen should be a ATI panel or just right click an empty space on your desktop and open the Radeon Controller Panel thing. Look at the 3D settings tab and click it. Look for a setting that says Adaptive Antialiasing, it's ATI's smart AA and can save some resources on your IGPU. There is a few more settings, set things to speed over quality...

You might try some of these batch files, like turning off Cortana unless you use it...

High end gaming laptops will not use the dedicated GPU (or at least will throttle to low levels) when on battery. A typical battery for a gaming laptop is 60mah. The GTX 10x0 series gpu's on these laptops are pretty much nearly identical to their desktop counterparts and can consume 100+ watts on load. It would kill the battery or make the laptop a bomb if it allows this power on battery :-)
Hence to get max performance from your games. make sure charger is connected. If your laptop contains only a integrated gpu as part of the SOC, then it should not even be classed as a gaming laptop at all (false advertising etc)

4k GPU? What? That means nothing. My AMD R9 M265X (dedicated GPU on my laptop, it was never meant to be a high-end GPU) can output 4k30. Doesn't mean that it'll perform acceptably in games at that resolution. And as much as the AMD APUs have a decent iGPU (for an integrated GPU anyway), they're definitely not meant for gaming like that.

I have a ATI APU (dual core 4GB's of RAM) thing I have been playing with. It plays 1080P video great! Games... eh if your very careful about what you attempt...

Cuphead Works great! Unravel Works great when playing but the opening scene is a bit choppy... Sonic the new one runs good but it feels slow... For emulation 32X runs slow and I haven't tried anything newer just because I doubt it will run well. I am going to try some sort of older build of MAME though, current MAME just is not good... lol

The A10 he has is a better CPU but I suspect the laptop is using the IGPU, one thing that might be physically upgraded might be getting the fastest RAM it supports... I hear it has a good boost for these lower end systems since the GPU and CPU are both fighting over the bandwidth to the RAM.

Sure, I never said they are terrible, but they're still in the integrated GPU land. Does he really have a dedicated GPU? I may have missed the model of his laptop.

I doubt it has a dedicated GPU, most laptops if they use one of those APU things, consider AMD graphics "good enough" and for some less demanding games they probably are... But if you have something like a desktop with a GTX 980 or something you can tell the difference by a mile. Even when a game runs well enough on those APU's they just feel slow.

I hope these new Ryzen APU's will be better.... Not that I will buy one, I just know eventually someone will dump one on me and me being me can't resist computers of any sort.

I mean, they're decent enough for what they are, but I find it interesting that they'd market a laptop without dedicated graphics as a "gaming laptop". That's a what, 15W TDP APU? It's not exactly... a gaming part... Hell, my laptop wasn't marketed on the store as a "gaming laptop", and its specs are far better than that. It's a what, 2015 laptop? Haswell i7, R9 M265X.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

I mean, 2k AUD is around 1322 EUR, and for far less than that you can get a laptop with a GTX 1050(M).

Well, my laptop has an i7, 12 of RAM, and a 920MX. It can run basically anything smoothly (not at high settings, but good enough for me). And it cost me like 400-500€ on sale, not as much as other gaming laptops costs.

Compared to those APUs... A 1050 ti would be a mile... A 980 is closer to like 10.

My laptop with a Skylake CPU and no dedicated GPU can game, you just need to properly configure your hardware.

AMD on a laptop is actually pretty bad, unless they've got a true dedicated video card paired with an Intel processor. I can honestly say I haven't used a laptop with a decent (loose) AMD CPU since maybe 2010.

I'm interested to see how the Raven Ridge APUs will perform. It'll feature the Zen CPU architecture and Vega GPU architecture, both of which were big strides for AMD.

I do like AMD APUs, but they're most certainly not suited for "gaming" to be advertised as such.

I noticed that the biggest issue for integrated graphics cards are shadows, try turning them off completely. If that doesn't work, try turning down the resolution... That's how I got Skyrim to run at near-ultra settings on a laptop XD
