Get a laptop that has an NVidia GPU would be my advice.
That would be best, but nvidia does generally cost more, especially with laptops. I went for a HD7970M rather than a 680M because the 680M would have added 50% to the cost of my laptop which cost about $1500, and caused a very slight performance loss (yes, loss)
I kind of wish I didn't because I've had a lot of trouble with BSoDs related to switchable graphics on that particular GPU and so have a lot of other people when looking online. Switchable graphics can be problematic with other GPUs but it seems especially bad with older AMD generations. It seems to be working fine now though, it was far more problematic on Win7 where I couldn't use the latest driver from AMD but had to use a specific driver from Clevo or the modded UniFL drivers or it would BSoD loop, but since I upgraded to Win10 I can use any driver I want without running into BSoDs.
At the same time, the hours that have been spent troubleshooting BSoDs still don't justify spending 50% more on an equivalent laptop with nvidia.

Don't take that as a recommendation to stay away from AMD though. I believe they've gotten a lot better since then. If the price difference is big AMD is probably still be the better choice.

I've always been biased with Intel + NVidia products, never had any major issues with the CPUs or GPUs, maybe I just got lucky? Optimus has gotten better over the years, but it's still a mess.

I now know that when buying new hardware and I don't know what the fuck I'm doing I should ask an unbiased person who does first.

I looked at the power plan and it was set to "Balanced", changing it to "High performance" didn't make a noticable difference.

Enabling Game Mode provides a few extra frames per second.

The laptop brand is HP, not sure about the model. I knew at the store that the staff member was trying to sell this model for whatever reason. He took the price down from ~$2500 to ~$2000. He would only offer about ~$100 off the others.

I'm happy to look into checking the graphics cards settings and all that, if you can tell me how first. Here's what I can find.

Rocking a dell 7567 w/ 4gb gtx 1050TI..paid $1100 CAD back in june. not sure what you mean about laptop having trouble with gaming, I can play GTA V @ solid 60fps on high, doom 2016 on max >120fps. The key is buying a laptop that has a decent GPU! The OP is either trolling, or really got ripped!

Yea I learned this the hard way. Paid 5000 for my top of the line Alienware 18 a couple years ago and it's already pretty obsolete. My new desktop I just bought cost me the same and it's a 16 core threadripper build with dual 1080TIs and 32GBs of 3600 RAM

Sent from my toaster running Rebug

Clevo my good sir, look for Clevo rebranded laptops. Switch and change your components how ever you wish.
