Right, so i own two Ds lites and one of them has its hinges broken so i want to replace it. So after looking up tutorials and gaining more confidence on how to preform the whole procedure, i plan on going ahead and giving it a try!

But, i am stuck with a dilemma which is that i do not now which color replacement shell to choose! the Ds lite that i plan on replacing is the one below:

41QzwR2agGL.jpg

SO my question is simple, which color shell would you recommend i mix the red with?

Just some quick notes below:

  • This will be my first ever replacement of any shell for any system that i own
  • Also i saw via YouTube that both screens have that red Square sticker thing which can be removed. But i intend to keep the red sticker!
  • Also since i already own the red buttons of my Ds lite, i was hoping to purchase a shell that i mixes well with the color Red so that i can end up with a ds lite that has a mix combination of two different colors that look stunning!
So what color do you recommend i use? and has anyone ever replaced their Red shell with A different color? and if so which color did you mix it with?

Thanks in advance

Hi, I have not had a red DS before but I have done a full housing replacement on 3 DS lites already, it is not as bad as you would think, it just takes time and patience really. (And this is coming from someone who is not familiar with these things) I think the most neutral colors you can combine with red is white or black, but honestly it really is up to you. I recently purchased an orange housing from someone on eBay and plan to install it on a DS lite as soon as I get my hands on another one. Best of luck and let me know what you decide on, I think custom color schemes are interesting :)

Personally I used to rock a red/white one back in the day. Nintendo did this with the 2ds too

I own that Red and White 2DS lol. But i just covered that up with a PQ Decal lol.
I would recommend black
Hmm yeah that could work allright.

Right so firstly forgive me for the late reply. I thought no one had replied to this thread and thus stopped keeping watch on it. My bad

Now since my OP the situation has changed.

I now own 4 Ds lites and maybe one DSI (if i win the bid on ebay)

The four are:

Two Blacks
One Pink
One White

Now, i intend on replacing the housing for 3/4 the DS lites that i own.

I plan on changing the aforementioned colors to the colors listed below:

So the white ds housing will be replaced to a Violet one that has white buttons
The pink one is undecided as of right now since it needs a new motherboard.
And i am changing ONE of the black ds lites to a mix of Black and Violet.

I already have de-assembled all 3 ds lites and now am just slowly but surely put them into their new housings one at a time whilst balancing work and rl.

And yes Pockie, i agree that disassembly and reassembly are pretty damn easy. The only problem, i seem to have come across is rusty screws that were hindering my progress but those have been dealt with. Lets just say they are sleeping with the fishes....

But jokes aside, i will post images of all 3 once i am done with re assembling them. I already have all the parts that i need to reassemble the 2 of the Ds lites. But that pink one needs a new motherboard since the cartridge slot doesn't work and thus i am currently searching Ebay for just that!

No worries on the late reply :)

I am curious as to where you purchased a violet housing? Wanted to make mine orange/purple and maybe green...

You dont have buy an entire motherboard just because of the game slot. I mean, if you have the soldering iron all you would really need to buy is the game slot replacement. which would be cheaper. It seems a bit tedious since you would need to solder the small pins but coming from a newb like me, I am sure it is possible and you can do it. In fact I am working on a 3DS (that seems to have more bads then goods but I dont want to give up on it >.<) where I need to replace the game slot as the pins inside are all crooked and bad.

It is up to you though. Good luck.

That bit about soldering the game slot is a really good point and i was considering it. But tbh that seems like wayyyy to much work for me. Plus the motherboards arent really that expensive these days, so i will just buy one and then reassemble from there.

Oh and regarding the Purple housing, here is the one that i purchased:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ZedLabz-r...847579&hash=item569d47b348:g:iS0AAOSwKnVZsBwg

Tbh to me it seems more like a mix of purple and violet but meh its my favorite colour hence why i chose it. Plus i havent really seen any White and pruple combinations online so i thought why not.

Oh and a 3DS you say? how hard is that? is it like the ds lite where it is doable or very hard? because i might have a go at the 3ds at some point down the line.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

White and black buttons

I will keep that in mind for that spare black ds lite which i own. I plan on replacing that too at some point.

So you don't have the red one anymore?
I was going to suggest a Crimson Red (red/black) shell, it looks sexy as hell and would go well with some red accents from the old shell such as buttons.

Good question. Long story short, i was forced to disassemble that since i needed the parts for something else. But i do have both of the Red Ds lite's screens which i could use with one of the two black ds lites that i own. But i agree Red and black are a superb combination.

I get you, it does seem like much a lot of work but personally, I rather have the tools to it in case I would need to later on for future projects and what not.

Thanks! I managed to find one on the u.s ebay so I am good. It does look like a mix purple...I think it would look interesting combined with orange.
Have you seen the clear housings? I was thinking of doing one with the pink/blue/yellow/green but that seems a bit exaggerated for the DS lol. Who knows maybe I will do it...

Well I have the older 3ds xl that my brother gave me. At first it was just the hinge and top screen that was bad so I managed to change the housing and get a new screen. I started fixing it a few years ago but just left it alone due to other issues. Picked it back up and found out I need a new game slot and possibly a new camera for it (unless it is the screen that is acting up since it has a minor tear on it but doubt it, probably the camera...)

It is not that bad. You just need to take into consideration a little more then the regular ds lite. I mean the process is still the same but now you have the joystick, the wifi antenna and a few other things to look at. What I struggled the most with was the damn ribbon cables and getting them through the hinge. I believe in the ds lite you only deal with 1 as well as the microphone cable. Well in the 3ds you have 3 ribbon cables (screen, camera, and uh speakers I believe, not sure) as well as the wifi antenna. Speaking of the wifi antenna once it is run through the hinge you need to run it under the gap between the game slot and motherboard. It can be quite tedious as sometimes it can get stuck or just not go all the way. But it is do-able. I will tell you it can be a bit more costly the then the ds lite, but do-able none the less.

Yes i have seen the clear housings for the Ds lite and they are cool but i personally am not into them. I prefer a solid color or a mix of colors as a shell tbh.

From what you described above, it seems like the process for both the ds lite and 3DS xl shell replacements are similar to some extent. Yes i agree that the wifi antenna can be a pain to push back under the ds game slot. But the key to it is patience but despite that it is a really trying experience. Same with the microphone cable and the ds lite has two ribbon cables, one for the upper screen and one for the lower touch screen. The lower one is easier to take off but that upper one requires patience. But it isn't tough to de-assemble, its the reassembly that seems to be a bit more trickier when it comes to the upper screen ribbon cable.

But yeah i do intend on having a go at the 3ds in the future. Most likely when the 3ds's can be found for alot cheaper (just incase i mess up you see. Since it will be alot easier to find parts when the system itself is cheaper.) I find shell replacements fun in a way since that feeling at the end is a good one.

More or less it is the same, I agree patience is a must. I also enjoy replacing the shells and feel very accomplished when I finish. The only down side to the model I have is that it does not have many color variations to it but I might spray paint it either way...

No, I was thinking about spray painting the 3ds xl housing. They only have 4 colors to begin with. But I have yet to do so and just put that project on hold. Still waiting for my orange housing for the ds lite, I look forward to that, still need to purchase the purple though...

Your DS looks nice too! Good combo.
