Tutorial  Updated

Updating from rxTools to Luma3DS

Follow https://3ds.guide to install Boot9strap, the latest and best setup you can have. It's super easy to setup, highly recommended to make the switch. Stop using EmuNAND and menuhax!!
Also, there's a step in the guide that has you move EmuNAND to sysNAND. So you won't lose any of your stuff in the end.

If you want personal one on one help with the process, send me a PM or let me know in a reply. It's also much quicker with my help than doing it on your own.

I see. Could you give me a link how to make an update to Arm9loaderhax then. BTW I'm not sure if my emunand is even working anymore since I made an update and then when it restarted it gives a black screen on boot (because of rxtools being banned), the hell i could not even find the emu nand files on my SD :/

This is what happened to me ><" May I ask can you manage to fix it?
Emunand is not working anymore. I use menuhax and rxtools before this.
From the posts I assume now I have to change to Boot9strap, and the guide is available at 3dsguide? Can my cias and savefiles be restored?

There's a step in the guide that will have you move emunand to sysnand, then delete emunand. All of your stuff from before will be in tact. If you want I can help you through the steps on discord. Let me know if you're interested : 3

Yes please! thank you so much! :3
Should I PM-ed you instead??

I am using the menuhax and rxtools at the moment. menuhax is still working, but it gives me blinking black screen when I enter rxtools.
SysNAND is still accessible when I press the R/L button right away when booting up.

I have tried to follow the instruction there - but I've might done something wrong because it keeps on giving me red screen from the homebrew. I'll just wait until you are back online and ask you again?
Thank you! :D

Hello, I have a Old 3DS with a CFW setup using rxtools, it's version is 4.2.0-9U so I suppose that by following https://3ds.guide/installing-boot9strap-(browser) I will be able to update to LumaEmu (something that I've been wanting to do for a LONG while). I have two questions though...

1st: I already tried to do an update a year ago to the arm9loader hax but I couldn't get too far because when I used Decrypt9WIP to install FBI I got an error with the health and safety app and couldn't install it. I don't see in the steps (that are considerably shorter than the arm9loader way) anything related to Decrypt9WIP or to FBI, could there be reason for worry there?

2nd: You say that in the end we keep the content of the emunand after the migration, I assume that includes saves, right?

Also, you have been a great help to the community so I guess you must be pretty busy so reply whenever you can and thanks beforehand.

Edit:
Well, I've been checking and it seems that the answer to the first question is in the troubleshooting section of the guide. My apologies... I would still like to know the answer to the second question though...

Edit2:
This is an important question that I forgot to ask...

I'm cuban so I have several dificulties with the internet, I can use my laptop and CCProxy or other programs to connect my 3ds through the laptop to the internet so I can (probably) use browserhax without difficulty, but there is no way to connect directly to the internet besides from that setup; none of the needed homebrew needs a direct connection to internet?, this might seem like a very dumb question, especially since I'm a programmer and I work with this kind of stuff every day, but it still worries me...

Heey there, never met a cuban online before! There's lots of them in my area : p

3DS hacking has gotten much easier than before, you can migrate from emunand to sysnand with boot9strap in less than an hour. And yes all your saves, literally everything you had on emunand will be preserved. In the end, you'll get rid of emunand and stick with sysnand instead.

You're on the right track, starting off from the browser. This step will boot you into Safeb9sinstaller where you can simply install Boot9strap. Then at the bottom of the page you can move onward to the next step which will have you configure Luma3DS CFW. Then on the updating section you'll find a link that says "moving Emunand"
https://3ds.guide/move-emunand

Follow this guide closely and you'll eventually migrate emunand over to sysnand. Then you can continue with the "Finalizing setup" section. It's very straightforward. Though if you can't get internet for the browserhax part, you'd need a DS flashcard to setup MSET.

Thanks for the quick reply!!!, I will start the process tomorrow. I'm quite impressed with the power of boot9strap, the other setups I saw were quite time-consuming, less than an hour sounds amazing.

I saw the part of the guide until Luma3DS, it seems that the part of moving the emunand is in the finalizing setup section...

Anyways, thank you and have a nice day!!! :yay:

Finally updated to LumaEmu + boot9strap!!!, It works awesomely!!! :yay3ds:
It was indeed fast, the longest step was the backup of my SD to the PC and back. I will suggest all my friends to do this method from now on.
There is something worth mentioning that perhaps should be added to the guide, and that's to actually have some amount of free space in your SD for the backups. (about 1GB in my case)
Didn't have a single problem during all the problem, no black screens or misterious errors, nothing!!!
Thanks to everyone in the community!!!

Thats great, glad to hear you got everything working! Told ya it was simple and painless thanks to boot9strap making 3DS hacking super easy. It's even quicker if you don't have emunand to migrate.
Now once you're done migrating emunand and you're on sysnand, you can update any time without worry. The latest update is 11.5.0 right now.
Also as a tip, you can use FBI's titledb to download homebrew apps or update them from your 3DS. Very handy

Hi, I have just started switching from rxtools + menuhax to luma + boot9loader (I'm on firmware 9.0) and everything was working exactly as mentioned in the guide until I moved my emunand to my sysnand. It has moved, but all my cia's and their game data has disappeared, while for instance folders I created in emunand before have survived the move.
Has anyone had this problem? How do I get my games back?

I might be worth mentioning that I completely cleared my SD card before switching to Luma. (Although I did make a backup) I just left my Nintendo 3DS folder because I figured that's where the game data was stored. I'm guessing the games and data are somewhere else though, so how do I get them to my new sysnand now?

Hello Navii! Let me explain the process of migrating emunandn to sysnand. What you had to do was first backup emunand. Then select that nand file and choose restore to sysnand. This should make sysnand the same as emunand. The last step was to backup all your files to your computer, then format the SD card with Godmode9. Once formatted, go back and restore all the files onto the SD card. This should leave you with sysnand only (Which is a copy of emunand), and all your games and data, but without emunand on your SD card any longer.

I'm unsure if you've missed a step, but since you have a backup on your computer you should try adding it to your SD card. It's just the Nintendo 3DS folder that contains all your games and data.

Thank you very much for your response! I did exactly what you just described, but only a part of my emunand (ie. the folders) has been restored. Thats why I'm not really sure what I did wrong.

Hi! I have an old 3ds XL, a link to the past version, it's running with rxtools and menuhax!
I'm having some doubts on how to update it to luma + arm9loaderhax.
Is this the best option that we have nowadays?
What files do i need to update it? And, do I need specific files for my 3ds version?
I tried to read some guides on the internet, but, they just made me lose my mind and get dizzy ^^'
Is there any guide that helps us with this?

Thx in advance for any help that you can provide!

Hey. I was in the exact same position as you yesterday. Old 3DS XL with rxtools and menuhax, put off updating this long because I didn't really see a need to. Now that I've done it, I'm glad I did. The 100% boot rate alone is worth it. Follow this guide https://3ds.guide/ It'll tell you all the files you need to download and how to use them.

Before you start, make a backup of the contents of your sd card onto your computer. Now, I ran into only one problem during the install and it was because of some sort of conflict with menuhax. To get rid of menuhax, delete the home menu's exdata folder on the computer. Depending on your console's region it'll be one of these,
  • EUR Region: Delete 00000098
  • JPN Region: Delete 00000082
  • USA Region: Delete 0000008f
  • CHN Region: Delete 000000A1
  • KOR Region: Delete 000000A9
  • TWN Region: Delete 000000B1
Other than that, if you want to keep your games and saves, make sure you Move EmuNAND when prompted in the Finalizing Setup section.

You actually don't need to "Get rid of menuhax". Basically you can get to sysnand by simply turning on the 3DS without an SD card inserted, then insert the SD and perform soundhax > safehax to install boot9strap. Which then you follow up with the "Moving EmuNAND" steps. You never have to actually kill menuhax at all, and it will become a story of the past once you set everything up.

Well, the problem I ran into was after installing boot9strap, at the final step of "Section III: Configuring Luma 3DS." After pressing START to reboot, I received an error saying, "An exception occurred Processor: ARM11." Since the guide said "If you get and error, just continue to the next page," I continued with "Finalizing Setup" until I had to turn the 3DS back on and the error was still there. Holding SELECT during power up didn't bring up the setup menu like a lot of threads suggested, and the simplest solution I found was to get rid of the home menu's exdata folder. So while that definitely doesn't happen to everyone with menuhax, I think it's best to just take a few seconds and get rid of it ahead of time.

As of this time I believe they removed the rxtools to luma, Or I just can't find it. Can recommend another tutorial to do this so I can proceed with the 3ds guide. I can't seem to go from rxtools to B9S, or I just don't have the knowledge to do so.

Basically you have to hack your 3DS as if it's never been hacked before, to install B9S. Then you have to move emunand to sysnand and delete emunand from the SD. And you're done

if i want to change my new ofw 2ds to cfw, what should i prepare?
New unhacked "New 2DS"? You'll need a magnet and an ntrboot compatible flashcard. Or one with ntrboot installed on it already such as the R4i gold plus. For about $20, you can essentially hack any 3DS you want using that cartridge and magnet.

Hey there,
I want to update my NN3DS, it is currently running cakesfw...
My EmuNAND is on fw 10.6.0 and my SysNAND is running 9.2.0.
Tbh, I'm completely out and I'm not even sure what I need to do and what I'm running. (Havent done anything for like 2 years on my 3ds....)
I tried to follow the guide on .3dsguide (to upgrade from arm9) but my 3DS just skips Section 2 and wants to configure Luma.
Do I need to start from the very beginning?
There was no Luma on the 3DS before and I'm a little confused...
