Temp'n #12

Another month, another issue of Temp'n! Let's take a look at what our tempers have in store for us for this issue:

  • Arcade stick raspberry project by @ciaomao

Clipboard01.jpg Clipboard02.jpg IMG_2639JPG.jpg IMG_2903JPG.jpg IMG_2947JPG.jpg

Resident temper @ciaomao made this sick-looking arcade stick by integrating Raspberry Pi 3 in the first stick and built a 2nd passive version with only the joystick controller. The housing is made of aluminium and it is even possible to add the 2nd player via USB.

The first stick has a USB switch to chose between the internal connection or external joystick mode. So its possible to use both sticks with the integrated retropie, but also with PC. The buttons on both sides are dedicated for pinball games.

You can access the 64GB microSD from the backside (the port behind that round black rubber) or wifi. You also have the option to change between analogue and digi mode, with a small button. The audio and video output is via HDMI Everything is very robust, which was my main intension.

His retropie image is customized, with a special bootscreen, in menu music (8bit Giana Sisters), meta data of all games and only shumps, pinballs and fighting games are flashed.

All components for those two sticks cost him about 100€. And he's nice enough to share the shopping list for the parts should you want to make you own! See the list below:

@Jiehfeng has a very ambitious project; he is trying his own writing style that he describes as "emphasizing non-seriousness with the seriousness of a review". While it's still a WIP, he already tried his hands at his writing method in a review of sorts for Splatoon 2. Give it a read below and any decent feedback is appreciated!

  • Soundcloud-archive GitHub project by @Ev1l0rd
Soundcloud is running out of funding (so it will likely close before the end of the year), and ArchiveTeam (the guys that archive sites that are closing) is not allowed to do any official effort to archive it. As a result, @Ev1l0rd decided to make a script that would download the entirety of a soundcloud users uploads using youtube-dl, along with thumbnails and detailed descriptions. When it finishes, it automatically uploads the created files to archive.org .

As an example, click on this link to access an archive of all Tempcast episodes that were posted on SoundCloud. :)

sonic continuum.JPG

If you haven't heard of it, Sonic Continuum is a fan game being developed by GBAtemp members @kingtut (dev), @ElijahZAwesome (quality assurance and testing) and @Sinon (Background artist) alongside teams from other sonic fan websites with tyran Cordine (tileset and level artist) from opengameart, Speeddemon150 (character artist and concept designer) from Sonic Amiino and JasmineFanFicRadio (Obstacles Dev and Making the update videos) from YouTube. The game will be coming to pc, phones, xbox one and 3ds.

During their first monthly update last week, they announced that they will be holding an original character design competition. Anyone can submit a character through the official GBAtemp thread or through social media, and the top five characters picked by the artists will be featured in the game, and the top character will be featured as a playable character in the game. So don't hesitate to submit your entry for a chance to have your favorite character featured in the game!

While it was quite the wait between Temp'n #11 and Temp'n #12, I'd say it was worth the wait to have all of these interesting entries! Until next time, get temp'n!

This looks like something to keep an eye out on. I've seen a couple threads, and I must say, what I've seen so far, it looks interesting. Best of luck guys!

Anyway, as for my own entry:
I'd just like to note that SoundCloud may actually continue in 2018. They got another money injection back in August. Having said that, I doubt SoundCloud will survive much longer after they run out again. If you have/had anything important on there, I would seriously suggest you back it up. If you can't run the script, ask me in a PM or something. I'm willing to archive anything.

I have also been meaning since forever to change the tmp folder step to both change it to create a dir in /tmp and allow you to select your own folder altogether, but alas... laziness is my greatest fault.

I think it's loaded with arcade and console ROMs, since it has a Raspberry Pi 3 inside. That's what I'd do too.

Ive chosen 64GB because this gives me no headache in regards of running out of memory. Its cheap and if I end up with a not 100% filled SD, I dont shed a tear. Quality above quantity is my motto. But keep in mind, that many games came on CD, like PSX, DC, MS-DOS and its not rare they demand about 700MB for the complete image. I just tweaked the stick to run Pro Pinball, which is a good example. BTW. what an awesome game!

That arcade stick looks pretty cool; an 8 button controller is always welcome, especially considering that a lot of arcade games use 6 button input.

Sonic Continuum also looks pretty cool; seems a bit ambitious, though. Hope we get to see it to the end.

In fact it is a 10 button smasher. As mentionend, there is one extra button on each side, dedicated for pinball games.

I'm going to start building an arcade stick like yours, and probably go with a 32GB nano USB. It will only have a few PS1 games and NES, SNES, Gameboy/Color/Advance, Genesis, GameGear, and NeoGeo ROMs on it. I get a good deal on the USB nano drives, about $10 each for 32GB.

That is completly up to you. I am happy to help you, if there are any open questions. just let me know. For me the most challenging part was/is the software behind, but your console selection is not to hard to emulate. NeoGeo needs the right romsets, but the rest is easy as soon as you have one game working, all others should be fine as well.

There are some weird issues on this page on Dolphin browser for android. A black square appears part way through the first post, then fills the whole page except the top bar. It also stays like that when going to the home page.

Hi there,

I got my hands on some spare cases, just as I used for my own arcade stick project. Most have the dimension of 194x185x57mm but Ive got also one or two with 244x185x57mm (same as mine). If you order them in low quantity, they cost easily like 30-50$/pc. But since I have a lot of fun with my own assembly, I would like to support similar projects and give others the chance to save some bucks. Please reply if you need a housing for free. I will send as much as I have until my stock (see pic) has gone. The only requirement from your side is to let us temps know what kind of project you have planned and to post pics how the result looks like, when done. Please check on DHL.de about the shipping cost, since I will ask you kindly to pay for it. I will ship from Germany.
