The latest hurricane in the south, Hurricane Harvey, has caused substantial flooding in Houston, Texas, with three currently dead and thousands who've lost there homes. So far, over 50 inches of rain has been reported, with more rain fall expected in the area.

Our own beloved reporter, @Chary, was unfortunately caught up in this disaster. We have heard from her, and she is physically fine, but she has unfortunately lost her house and possessions. We will have more information on this as we hear it.

All our thoughts and prayers of the Temp staff are with Chary and those other people caught in the disaster.

The problem is, not all of Houston needed to evac. Moving the guaranteed danger zones would've massively helped thin out rescue efforts so they don't have to condemn people (or at the very least, as many people) like they are now.

People didn't even need to evac the city, setting up pre-emptive shelters farther north and in areas much less prone to flooding would've done wonders as well.

Honestly there's a lot they could've done. The answer was NOT to do nothing. But obviously the answer was not to evac the entire city either, that's ridiculous. Something should've been done. Not the mayor getting told "shit's gonna get bad dude." and him saying "Ehh hunker down people it'll b k"

Places like Bellaire wouldn't need evacuation, but I think anyone near a bayou or river should have at least been urged to get out. Apparently our governor was begging people to evacuate, and the mayor refused to listen, but Greg Abbot's (governor) words certainly never made it to any pre storm reports that I saw. They should have had all public schools open as shelters, and the mayor shouldn't have tweeted out an INCORECT NUMBER to the coast guard either. Telling residents to hoard water bottles and canned tuna and to stay and play down how dangerous the storm actually was, just shows how incompetent this was all handled.

Last night a friend told me about how they had no food or water since they underestimated and didn't notice the hurricane at first. I went ahead and packed a backpack of canned food and water bottles and walked in the floodwaters to give them what they needed. We really need to work together and help relieve any stress and uncertainty that this hurricane is bringing..

Man, this feels like Katrina all over again. You really would think that people in charge would have learned that lesson.

As a Katrina survivor, I can tell you that the next several days are going to be rough. But once you get through it, you will be much better for it.

It's like that song goes:
If you're going through hell, keep on moving. Don't back down, plow right through it. You might get out before the Devil even knows you're there. (At least I think that's how it goes...)

Still, I'm glad to hear that some good has come out of this mess. There's really not much I can say that hasn't been said already, so I'll stop here.

He's likely just busy moving things either out of the way, or higher. Prepping to leave/calling 911. Hope he's alright, i'm sure he is! It takes a bit for flood water in the house to get to a really bad point so he should still have time.

Just hold on, I know it's hard not to worry, but Kingwood should be okay for at least a bit, right? Afaik water hasn't reached critical level there, but I've heard a few houses took on water. Power could have gone out, his phone might not be charged, he could be finding an evac route with a boat.

I don't have enough information to know whether or not he's preparing or the water has already claimed their house. It's just my uncertainty weighing down on me. Thanks for the reassurance, it calmed me down. Compared to Sunday, the water level in my neighborhood has gone down about 8 inches so that's a relief.

Addicks reservoir is now overflowing, releasing more water into already flooded downtown houston, if it fails then the damage would basically be katrina 2.0

I know I'm not around very much, but I wanted you to know that I'm praying right now for you. I'm thankful to God that so many were saved, especially by those brave guys like the one in that boat, and those providing shelter.

Yeah. Even more hopefully, maybe some are high enough, (though the water was reaching the shelves as I left) or some good old fashioned rice will help. The loss of all those games hurts, but I think my parents are devastated too. They lost a lot of personal stuff, that really can't ever be replaced.

Your SNES is most likely fine as long as you didn't leave it plugged in while you were trying to protect it. You probably lost all the labels to your games though.

Just open up your games and console if you can and give them enough time to dry. Other stuff like your books and birth certificate and whatever else you mentioned are unfortunately lost most likely.

My dad killed himself a few years ago. And most of his possessions were lost. All his treasured knickknacks. But the most valuable thing I have left is a recording of his voice. Losing all his stuff sucked. But I had to force myself to be grateful for what little was left. You and your parents may have lost most of your possessions. But at least you're alive and have each-other. The loss of treasured possessions will sting. But you're alive to make new memories. Best of luck.

This flood is massive, pure horror and too many people have lost most they had, thats clear. But it freaks me out, all the media reports about it world wide 24/7, while at the same time the monsoon in bagladesh killed 100 times more, without beeing noticed by the rest of the world. And you can be sure they wont get the same support as the people will get in the US.

Chary: When you get to the point that the flood has subsided and you can go back and sift through your stuff,
don't throw flooded carts, or even consoles away. Cartridges can get wet. Same with some older consoles.
I hated to hear how your library is under water, I just had to type this to say that it may be salvageable.
Of course, I hated to hear about everything else, especially was worried about your kitty, I love animals!
Boxes and papers may not survive but carts should, they're just chips on small boards.
I would be glad to help fix/salvage any of your stuff when/if the time comes, lemme know.
