SNES Classic To Have Rewind Feature

snes classic.JPG

Now you can play with power, super power... and back again!

Another announcement from Nintendo at Gamescom today was the Rewind feature in the upcoming SNES Classic Edition. It lets players rewind their gameplay to retry tricky sections, pick up missed items or simply run through an area again to see if anything was missed.

However, the rewind time depends on the kind of game: Players can go back a few minutes in role-playing games such as Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, while action titles such as Super Mario World offer around 40 seconds, ideal for re-trying short segments of gameplay.

The system also comes with additional features like frames that can be wrapped around the on-screen display for each game and suspend points that allows you to save anytime, anywhere!

The enthusiasm level is so 1990's!

The SNES Classic Edition hits stores this September 29th.

Hey, there are always those people who use stock stuff and don't know that emulation exists. I think Nintendo is trying to aim towards that audience, but that doesn't mean that peoople who use emulators might not buy this. We love our SNES. Or at least I do.
If this is another limited edition release, then they'll sell it to anybody who wants to buy it for the short time its available. It appeals even to people who use emulators because it's a physical item and a collector's item.

don't know if anyone's said this yet but the announcer(?) sounds like he just got out of bed after trying this for 30 days in a row
If you listen closely you also can hear that he had a single glass of milk with his breakfast. Could be 200ml, I think :P

I love the retro trailer.
If this had more of my favorite games or at least took cartridges, I would probably get one.
Seems like a nice device, and I love the SNES, but for it to be worth it to me, it would have to play all my favorites, otherwise it will just be an extra device that doesn't serve much purpose as I will still need to use an emulator to play most of the games.

This classic consoles don't have any old hardware it will be a modern CPU running an offical emulator from Nintendo as with the NES Mini and sadly the emulator dosn't even provides a perfect emulation. It isn't that they emulate the hardware 1:1

The emulation here however seems to be pretty darn good from what I've seen.

Can't this be done in RetroArch already to your own will? I don't really see the selling point of the 'Classic NES/SNES', since it's not original hardware and Nintendo knows most people will emulate...
It's the experience. I tried setting up RetroPi for this. After finally setting up everything following every guide, I'm still left with a janky mess where features like video filters and save states are inconsistent and requires navigating a text menu to use - along with memorizing several weird button combinations. Sure I could eventually figure it all out, but it is not the same.
With a Nintendo Classics console I can show it to friends and dates and they will pick it up immediately and think it's cool. With a RetroPi I'd have to spend way too long explaining how to use it and those same people will just think I'm a dork.

What is Suspend Points and Super FX?
Assuming that is not a call out to Nintendo suspend points is usually a one time savestate -- rather than having to make it to a save point or leaving it on after your mum calls you for dinner you can make a savestate, turn it off, turn it back on later and pick up from there after which the savestate is deleted.
super fx then. Short version is the SNES was not the most high powered device so they expanded on things seen in the NES era and started bolting on chips to cartridges (commonly referred as special chips). Wikipedia I know but it is good enough today for this discussion https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Super_NES_enhancement_chips . One of the more notable was the super fx chip which was used in Star Fox and the Star Fox 2 thing which this is supposedly coming with.
Today it mostly matters when using weaker systems and emulating on them (the GBA and DS SNES emulators for instance tend not to be able to run games using special chips), trying to use all the fancy stuff on fairly weak systems (the PSP struggled a bit with some of these) or when you buy flash carts as they then have to do everything the original chip did and they tend not to be the sorts of things you buy by the thousand from China any more. The latter tends to see you have to emulate a chip (doable but not that easy) or cannibalise an existing cart for said chip (also doable but can be expensive as many, maybe most, games with special chips are rare and sought after games).

I guess this is good for Nintendo having the capability to do 1:1 emulation, especially with the super fx thing. It's a win for those who want a true Super Nintendo experience.
Can I quote you on that in however many months when Nintendo once again put out a weak emulation that is surpassed by probably even zsnes? Nintendo does not have a good history in this arena and we have been having more than a nice perk type emulation since the GBA at least.

When I watched the trailer and they said, "pick a frame," for some reason I thought it was gonna have frame advance. DAMMIT! Also, does anyone else think the trailer is AWESOME??

NERD (Nintendo European Research and Development) is actually in charge of the emulation, and they wrote the DS emulator on Wii U, so we can be assured that it won't suck big time XD. Zsnes, a bit of a stretch, at least Nintendo's emulators get the Chrono Trigger sounds right, mostly lol. NERD and M2 write better emulators than Nintendo ever could

I've been watching the videos of direct footage too, from what I can tell, it's the best Snes emulation I've seen that's official. Star Fox runs at the proper clock speed of the Super FX chip, something Zsnes struggles with 11 years later.
