SNES Classic To Have Rewind Feature

snes classic.JPG

Now you can play with power, super power... and back again!

Another announcement from Nintendo at Gamescom today was the Rewind feature in the upcoming SNES Classic Edition. It lets players rewind their gameplay to retry tricky sections, pick up missed items or simply run through an area again to see if anything was missed.

However, the rewind time depends on the kind of game: Players can go back a few minutes in role-playing games such as Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, while action titles such as Super Mario World offer around 40 seconds, ideal for re-trying short segments of gameplay.

The system also comes with additional features like frames that can be wrapped around the on-screen display for each game and suspend points that allows you to save anytime, anywhere!

The enthusiasm level is so 1990's!

The SNES Classic Edition hits stores this September 29th.

They may know, but they will never admit that people use highly illegal unlicensed emulators, amateur games, or save backup tools

They know, admit, and encourage people buying their stuff, though
Yeah and I heard there were issues with NES classic emulation in a few games that were not present in better emulators like nestopia.

Hey, there are always those people who use stock stuff and don't know that emulation exists. I think Nintendo is trying to aim towards that audience, but that doesn't mean that peoople who use emulators might not buy this. We love our SNES. Or at least I do.

Good going, Nintendo.

Officially supporting what homebrew has been able to give us for the longest time.

I'm not sure the rewind feature is a good thimf to have... Most would just say "git gud" like in the old times, but games like Contra or Battletoads.........

Emulators are not illegal. The roms that you download off of the internet and play on the emulator are illegal, but not the emulator itself.

In part because their emulators are not designed to "emulate the NES" but rather to play the individual games bundled (and never it was advertised differently), in part because most VC games are not actually designed to play 100% like original (epilepsy censorship, accessories not emulated, etc)

Can't this be done in RetroArch already to your own will? I don't really see the selling point of the 'Classic NES/SNES', since it's not original hardware and Nintendo knows most people will emulate...
While I agree anybody sensible would roll their own outside of a few very specific scenarios (I am told speedrunners get especially pedantic about these sorts of things) it seems the thing sold out and sold well. To that end I am sure Nintendo does not care.

It is an original Nintendo product.
Also, collectability and not being a filthy pirating plebeian.

Eh the rewind feature doesn't interest me at all.
It just encourages more laziness amongst gamers.

what if the things being emulated still have patents that have not expired?
Still completely legal. The software isn't technically replacing or infringing on the original product, as the original product is hardware. If the emulator was using the BIOS from the original system, then it would be illegal, as they're distributing copy-written software. This is why you usually see emulators that do use the original BIOS from systems distributed without the BIOS, telling you to download it elsewhere.

I love this feature :) are nintendo starting to finally 'get it' ?
the mobile games, the switch, the retro consoles, the 3DS retro designs, etc.
they've been making a lot of good marketing decisions in the past couple years :) give the people what they want

All we need now is the official Mother 3 release!

i get what you are saying but...
only 20 games...
unless they will go with "we don't want you to hack the console and put all the entire library in it but i will shut my eyes and leave a window open for you"

but maybe they are crawling "there" ?

also, a neat idea:
what if they sold separately a tiny cartridge that ressembles the super game boy, would be plugged in the top and would let you play GB\C games in it?

Maybe your people, but there's a lot of people who thinks being nerd is totally uncool and ain't going to pass throught the process of learning how to emulate.
