NTRBoot Released!

It's here!

Info

@Normmatt has created a way to run B9S .firm files from bootrom via a DSi Flashcard and a magnet! This works on every 3DS on any firmware version.

For installation without a PC, user @TheCyberQuake has created a pack which will automatically install B9S and copy over essential starter homebrew from the flashcard's SD to the 3DS's. This will mainly be used for PC-less B9S installations. If you have a PC with you, use 3ds.guide. Read more here: https://gbatemp.net/threads/481141/

How does this work?

This works because of a flaw in the bootrom. Before the bootrom boots the NAND, it checks to see if Start+Select+X is held down, and if the shell is closed. If these requirements are met, it will boot an NDS cartridge from the bootrom. This give that cartridge bootrom access. You might be wondering how you'd hold down buttons while the shell is closed, and why you need a magnet. If you put a magnet in a specific spot on the 3DS, it will go into sleep mode. Using this, you can boot the NDS cartridge with the buttons held down while in sleep mode! Using a reflashable flashcard, you can boot B9SInstaller using the flashcard, and easily install it on your 3DS.
The 2DS doesn't need a magnet since a switch puts it to sleep instead of a magnet.

What does this mean?

  1. Any 3DS model on any firmware can be hacked with minimal effort
  2. You can unbrick any 3DS model from any type of brick.
    - Remember, you don't need a NAND backup for this. Just do a CTRTransfer.
    - This does not apply to MCU bricks.
  3. Even consoles with fried NAND, or even the NAND chip physically removed, can use this
This is incredibly impressive stuff, and will most likely be released soon! edit: now!

FAQ

Q: Can Nintendo patch this?
A: Nope! Not without a new hardware revision.

Q: My flashcard is blocked by my firmware! Can I still use this?
A: Yes! The flashcard blacklist is not enabled on the bootrom.

Q: Why can't this work with my flashcard?
A: The installation requires you to flash NTRBoot to the flashcard's nand. Most DS flashcards, such as the original R4, have a ROM, which is not flashable.

Q: Can I install NTRBoot on my flashcard without another 3DS system?
A: If you can run NDS roms on your 3DS with it, then yes. If it's blocked on your 3DS version, then you'll need another 3DS system to use it.

Q: Will my 3DS flashcard work?
A: No, only the NDSi flashcards listed above.

Q: Will any other flash cards work?
A: Only the ones listed in the OP. However keep in mind that flashcards such as the DSTT, Supercard DS2 and R4 SDHC Dualcore are planned to be supported in the future.

Q: I tried to do this with my cartridge and it didn't work?
A: It doesn't work with regular DS cards.

Q: Can I unbrick from a ____ brick?
A: Considering the card has access to the bootrom, yes! This can unbrick any brick (except MCU), unless you've taken a knife to the motherboard.

Q: Can I install B9S on the latest firmware with this?
A: Again, since the card has access to the bootrom, you can do this easily! Just plug in your flashcard, boot up using the magnet and button combination, and install.

Q: Does this work on the New Nintendo 2DS XL?
A: Yes!

Well, crap. Any idea when they will be? Sure, I could use the DSiware method (my brother's 3DS has CFW with a legit copy of Zelda Four Swords), but I don't want to lose my data on the Sun/Moon demo.
When someone reverse-engineers the cart and codes in support for it. I don't think it's specifically being looked at.

Yeah, I can get how it'd be frustrating right now for someone with one console on 11.4+. Also it's worth keeping in mind that an ntrboot cart also serves essentially as a hardmod replacement, fixing any software bricks you might happen to have. It sounds like a lot of people are already using it to rescue paperweights that they tossed in a drawer years ago.

So those with 1 console only I.e. 2DS XL can't use ntrboot?

Would both of these cards be compatible?

The r4i-sdhc.com card almost certainly is not. The Acekard 2i should be fine.

Sure, you can use it, if you happen to have a flashcart with ntrboot flashed to it already. There is not currently a method of flashing ntrboot to a cart without a CFW 3DS though.

Yes, but what about the people who want to start Homebrew and have waited months for this?
I don't understand the question. You use this to install b9s. You then switch the b9s boot.firm with the latest nightly of luma3ds boot.firm, with the starter pack on your card and optionally .3dsx version of FBI. Then you boot into your luma, open an app (like health&safety), then use Rosalina to set it to HBL. Close the app (H&S in this case) and reopen it. It'll be HBL that opens. There's your homebrew. FBI to install stuff (and if it yells at you when installing, enable arm9 patching in luma settings. Not sure about that since I'm not unfortunate enough to be in that environment).

EDIT: Ok, now I see. You're not able to get the flashcart setup at the moment BECAUSE you don't have homebrew already. I feel for you. Eventually, I'm pretty sure there will be an updater file for a card or two. It'll be a good wait though (using a card's built-in updater method).

Having difficulties with a blue screen brick (00000400, "NAND not found error"). Attempted a hardmod downgrade on a JP New 3DS (small one) almost half a year ago and got a brick when I wrote to the NAND. Trying to restore my unmodified NAND backup didn't fix it and I figured it was done for.

I have ntrboot setup on an AK2i HW81 now. I no longer get the bootrom error while performing the exploit, but I can't seem to load any FIRMs. It'll stay on an un-lit black screen until I either pull the battery or hold the power switch. I've triple checked that all the correct files are in the right place, tried a different microSD, tried using different FIRMS, re-flashed my AK2i on two different consoles, and even went so far as to disassemble the system again to see if anything was out of place or if there was any noticeable board damage. Not sure at this point if it's a random issue with ntrboot_flasher or something with the hardware itself.

Anyone have any ideas?

How did you manage to pass the BSoD? I can't trigger the ntrboothax, when powering on the system goes straight away to BSoD but not sleeping.

Hopefully by next week I will be able to repair my 3DS. I was in the middle of hacking my 3DS successfully downgraded to 2.1 when the 3dsguide changed conforming to bootstrap9 no longer using the armloaderhax. for some strange reason the 3dsguide website to install on the 2.1 firmware would not work so I had the really stupid idea of using my super smash bros cartridgeto update the firmware back to 11.2 and start over using bootstrap9. Anyway the smash bros cartridge update caused a rare frankenware brick. I cannot open any apps. The cartridge slot does detect games but you can't open the game since it is an app slot. I tried updating to 11.5 in recovery but it fails at 70%. I tried for about 2 hours and gave up. The ntr really is my only hope besides a soft mod. Here is a video:

Good to see that the R4 SDHC Dualcore will be supported as I have the RTS lite one (2013) and they're identical.

I look forward to that then, I have a 2015 version. I never even really tried it out, to see if it actually has RTS or something. Kind of would come in handy in certain Pokemon playthroughs.

Something I'm not clear on and would like confirmation. Is unbricking basically just installing CFW on the bricked console with a set-up and compatible flashcart?

It's either restoring an old backup nand or doing a ctrnand transfer if you don't have a backup (using ntrboot). Then you install cfw when it boots properly.
Basically.

Calling me a fool isn't a very good argument. By the way, it's actually "you're a fool" next time you want to call someone something, please make sure you aren't what you're calling said person.
really got him with that spelling mistake! He's BTFO! He'll never talk again!
