Wii U servers use the Nintendo Network servers. If they shutdown that, they shutdown all online functionality for Wii U and 3DS, including friend codes and eShop. For the Wii, WFC was distinct from WiiConnect24 which itself was distinct from Wii Shop, which by the way is still up.

All of the eShop stuff is still using the same server too. I saw a picture on Splatoon Testfire on the Wii Shop Channel website. Given that is used across Wii, Wii U, 3DS, and now Switch to merge NNID funds, the store isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Same with the account system, no point letting you link your NNID to your Nintendo Account and implement at least some of it in Switch to later kill it down the line. The DSi Shop was cleared out since the DSiWare being on the 3DS eShop made it obsolete. WFC was closed due to GameSpy shutting down and no real way of fixing it. WiiConnect24 is the only one that was intentional, but that was mainly just a gimmick anyway, being replaced with Wii U and 3DS' SpotPass.

I would still prepare anyway just in case, and then at least we could run hacks without bans for the most part.

I barely played online myself. Mario Kart was fun for a while but I was never a fan of Splatoon. Sm4sh and Pokken were too laggy for me.

Now that 5.5.2 added a message about Miiverse no longer being available, I think we should probably start now. Super Mario Maker especially will get destroyed if we don't have stuff ready, and I don't know about everything else.

One thing is Miiverse shutting down

Another is the whole network.

And tht wont happen soon. If it happened with DS and Wii was because of Gamespy closure. No more, no less.

why is Miiverse getting shut down?
Because it was shit and not liked by enough people and probably costs nintendo alot of money to keep it going. If it had been a success then it would have been on the Switch the fact that it's not on the Switch should tell you everything you need to know

WiiU online funcionality is still here but what will happen when Nintendo shutdown the service?

Switch online is free now however It will be a paid service on 2018

The WiiU scene is ready for this? Play MK8 online, share and backup Mario Maker Levels...
Nintendo Network is not the same thing as Switch Online. Many games will let you play for free using Nintendo Network but a select few games that support Switch Online will let you play wth voice chat and everything.

Miiverse honestly just sucked. The Wii U would've been a lot more successful if it had native Facebook/Twitter posting back in 2012 instead of Miiverse.

But didn't Nintendo say they would support the 3ds well into 2018? It would have to be 2019 at the earliest if that's the case...
Nintendo lies about this kind of thing on a regular basis when new systems are released. They also said the Switch (the NX at the time) wouldn't be a replacement to the Wii U, and it would continue to be supported with new games.

Why would they say the 3DS would stop being supported after a year if they're trying to sell them?

Good point. The only game I ever play online with the 3ds is Mario maker and that's pretty rare. Do a lot of people even play online with their 3ds? Or am I the only one who just generally doesn't? The only thing I don't want them to take down for a few years anyways is the eShop, but they'll keep that up anyways to milk some more money out of it.

The eShop isn't going anywhere anytime soon, because it's a direct source of money. After all, the Wii Shop Channel is still around.

I should note that the end of the Wii U and the 3DS are closely following the same timelines for the ends of the GBA, DS, GameCube, and Wii:
  • A Zelda release at or just before the release of the successor console:
    • Twilight Princess on the GameCube (simultaneous release with successor console)
    • Skyward Sword on the Wii
    • Breath of the Wild on the Wii U (simultaneous release with successor console)
  • A Pokémon remake released just before or just after the release of the successor handheld:
    • Pokémon Emerald on the GBA (just before release of successor handheld)
    • Pokémon BW2 on the DS (after release of successor handheld)
    • Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon on the 3DS (after release of successor handheld)
  • New models released just before or just after the successor in order to get rid of spare parts:
    • Game Boy Advance SP released just before successor
    • Game Boy Micro released just after successor
    • N2DS released just after successor
    • Wii Family Edition released just before successor
    • Wii Mini released just after successor
Nintendo WFC for the DS and the Wii was discontinued on May 20, 2014:
  • About 8.5 years after the service started on the Nintendo DS.
  • About 7.5 years after the service started on the Wii.
  • About 3.2 years after the release of the 3DS.
  • About 1.5 years after the release of the Wii U.
Hypothetical dates:
  • About 8.5 years after NN service started on the 3DS: July, 2020
  • About 7.5 years after the NN service started on the Wii U: May, 2020
  • About 3.2 years after the release of the Switch: May, 2020
  • About 1.5 years after the release of the Switch: September, 2018
That puts the likely end times at either 2018 or 2020. Considering the Switch's likely role as a 3DS successor as well as a Wii U successor, and the shifting model to a paid subscription service on the Switch, I suspect 2018 is when NN will be shut down.

Good analysis.
I think Nintendo wants to give people further incentive to buy the new console. With Wii/DS they had the Gamespy excuse. This time I won't pardon such behavior. I'd rather go retro (especially since I'm disappointed Nintendo let the Wii Remote die).

Well I'm kind of glad it died because Joy-Cons look better and are half the size of the Wii Remote. And if you accidentally swing it into a TV it won't crack the TV screen. People with small hands couldn't reach all of the buttons either.
