PlayStation Plus membership cost to go up in Europe/Australia

image.jpeg

Sony will be increasing the cost of their subscription service, PlayStation Plus. On August 31, the annual fee will go up from £40.00 to £50.00 for the UK. In Europe, costs will increase to €60.00 yearly while Australia will be faced with a rate hike to $80.00. Those in North America will not face these same rises in price, but only likely because there already was a rise in cost for subscribers back in September 2016. Customers can still buy PS+ memberships for the current rate, until the end of August, so it may be wise to grab a year if you're interested in what the service offers.

stop complaining! if you have the money to buy ps4 then sure you have the money to pay 80$ every year like bunch of suckers for online subscription. good job sony. nintendo should learn.
Preferences and limits. Just because someone has money for a PS4 it doesn't mean he/she should buy the overpriced online service.

Again, it's also like people who can afford a Rolex but don't want to.

Thankfully I'm a single player gamer.I bought my ps4 back in 2014 as a easy way to pass time with single player games and it also has many great exclusives.Online multilayer isn't what made want to me learn about pc hardware to build a pc,but modding skyrim with external assets is a must for me this generation which is what's forcefully making me want to switch to pc.So as long as Sony doesn't charge us just to play single player,I could care less, multiplayer is and always has been pc's territory.Sony is just being outright greedy charging for multiplayer, but that is not why I bought a console. If you are playing on a console and are waisting money on ps+ for multiplayer, you should definitely consider switching to pc.

Unfortunately, maintaining servers isn't free. Those who believe we shouldn't pay for online services are wrong. The last thing I want to see rise up, is a Free To Play online service. We all know the absolute crap fest that F2P brings. We don't need that.

However I will agree, that these prices are way out of hand. Anything upwards of 30€/$/£ is ridiculous for online play.
Free PC online servers work fine *cough*

What servers we talking about here? Most stuff is player hosted p2p, the few games that do have dedicated servers aren't provided by Sony, but by the pub of the game. Rocket league = Psyonix, Battlefield = EA, Battlefront= EA, I think COD might have some now, Activision picking up the tab. Can't think of any games where Sony are hosting the servers. Even big Sony published titles like Uncharted are still using the same shit tier p2p they always have.

In case of cross platform games, it's the same servers. Rocket league, I can literally sit in the same psyonix hosted server as a playstation player. Yet they have to pay for privilege.

Servers for psn itself, of course have a cost, but Sony get a cut of every single game sold for the console, valve manage to run a similar service and only get a cut from stuff bought directly from steam (valve get nothing from keys bought elsewhere) and on top of that, actually provide dedicated servers for their games. Sony can't even be bothered for games they publish.

It's been years since psn went paid and you still can't even change your name.

"Free" games, well the pricing model speaks for itself really. If the "free" games were as amazing as people make out, they could stand on their own, just as they did with ps+ on the ps3.

It's a farce. The baseline for paid online play, should be dedicated servers made available by the service provider (in this case, Sony) to every dev that wants them, free of charge. You're paying Sony for online play, they should at least make sure dedicated servers are on the table for any devs that want them and remove the cost barrier to the devs.

MS are no better in this regard, Azure still costs devs to use, but at least MS generally uses it for their 1st party titles.

It's unbelievable that people will pay for the privilege of p2p hosting, but not only that, rush in to defend it and complain people are "entitled" because they don't think the service is worth the asking price.

Anything upwards of $0 is ridiculous, why in God's name would I pay for internet access twice? That's just dumb.

Because you're not paying for internet access. You're paying for a quality online gaming service, with functioning servers that cost money to run.
If thats true then explain why the glorious pcmasterrace gets online access on every single 3rd party multiplayer game for free.

The service is mostly p2p though. Most of the games with dedicated servers are 3rd party and the server cost is being picked up by the publisher, not Sony.

Flagship Sony titles, like uncharted, are still p2p.

That's easy, pc gamers rejected it. MS tried with Xbox live and pc gamers told them to jog on. So now live is free on pc, for the exact same service you pay for on Xbox.

Simple as that. Console online is paid, not because it has to be, but because it can be.

As a pc gamer myself, I have to point out that the quality of the online services in consoles, is usually far better than the pc counterpart. Mainly in regards to lag reduction and quality of the overall experience.

This is especially the case for non AAA games.

Could the console market make it's online services free? Of course it could. I'd love that. My point is, I do not mind paying for a good online service. But when you have these ridiculous prices, that's a different story.

I'd be perfectly happy paying 20$ or 30$ a year for online gaming, with a tendency towards lower and lower pricing driven by competition and better technology.

However I do understand everyone's point: the price is going up. Not down.

Plain greed.

You state it like it's fact. I'm a pc gamer as well and I'd disagree. Games generally don't have a different netcode between pc and console. More and more indie games are even supporting cross play, so are running pretty much the same code or servers (if it has dedis).

Yeah I don't agree with that either.

I find the Steam experience for multiplayer works really well.

lag reduction

I'm not sure how true that is. I've found many console games can lag horribly.

Anyways, I'm happy with PC for mutliplayer and console for single player. That works for me. :)

Bigger market share made Sony arrogant and fully invested in anti-consumerism these last years, not surprising at all.

And of course there is a free pass when people are stupid enough to rejoice on anti-consumer practices enough to mention them as an advantage.

ITT: entitlement, entitlement, entitlement

For those of you who think that you shouldn't pay for online, go back on PC with your cheaters and shitty online support. Servers can't run out of thin air.

PS+ gives online capabilities, cloud saves and free games every month, yet you still bitch about it. Rotfl.
i dont think there are many here saying they shouldnt, but rather why the prices are so damn high just to play with my bro who lives a few blocks away from me.

gotta go back to them good ol days:

them: "but your wack in mario kart 64"
me: "so wassup then, bring your controller"

That's why I am very wise. I don't buy Playstation Plus member at all and never will! They just want our money so they can get richer and richer every minutes. Without us, they are poor and broken.

Nah, never! I will be fine with what I am doing everyday since 1990's until now. They will not have my money. NEVER! Money is mine. I wish most people would do the same thing. They aren't thinking at all.

What pisses me the most off is the fact that we pay 10€ more for the same service..
Seriously, fuck off Sony. We pay 10€ more for the same shitty indie games, we pay 10€ more for the same online multiplayer... it’s nothing extra for this money. Its just Sony ripping off its customers.

Did they even say why the price is going up? And why in some regions only?

Some regions already had a price rise last year iirc, this is just the raising the price for others.

Why it's going up, because it can, simple as that. Most will pay. A lot will defend it and some will even attack those that don't think the service is worth the asking price. With a fanbase like that, you don't need to say why or justify it.
