I've been seeing people with CFW switching to using 3dsx homebrew over CIA homebrew because they're worried they'll get banned. However, this won't get you banned and only causes more problems. How I know it won't get you banned is because I use Themely (CIA) all the time and I have yet to be banned. (Who knows, the banwave may be over.) How it causes more problems has multiple reasons.
1. With Rosalina and the new Homebrew Launcher, target titles are no longer supported and attempting to launch something like a save manager gives the following error:
Rosalina
This homebrew exploit does not have support for launching applications under target titles. Please use a different exploit.
2. With 3dsx homebrew, you can't install CIAs, and since I know a lot of you enjoy your piracy, this means you can't pirate games.
This point is factually wrong, applications can be installed just fine if at least 1 of the following is true:
- The title that hosts the 3dsx already has permission to install titles (access to a certain service provided by the AM driver)
- An arm11 exploit is used to temporarily add said permission
- The CFW allows all apps to access to all services (Corbenik/Luma have this option)
3. It makes absolutely no sense to run 3dsx homebrew that already exists in CIA format when you have CFW.

Please, STOP WORRYING ABOUT USING CIA HOMEBREW. It's safe.

The ban wave is over, and there is pretty much no single common trait of the consoles that were banned.
However, what we do know is that when you are online your currently playing title is sent to Nintendo, all the time, and logged on their servers, regardless of whether you disable SpotPass or displaying your currently playing title to friends.

There is actually not a whole lot of information sent to Nintendo that is common across all CFW users that can be used to distinguish CFW users from legit users, but the one thing that is common across pretty much all of them is that they all had FBI installed and used it, and many of them had Luma Updater as well.
As far as we know this is the single universally identifying factor for CFW users and other than that, there weren't really any common traits among CFW consoles, that's why people are avoiding CIA homebrew now.

We don't know what's causing bans. At the same time, we don't know what's not causing bans. But what we know are that there are only a few possible things that could be used by Nintendo to identify CFW users and this is the only one of them that is almost universally identifying.
It's of course possible that the reason there isn't really a clear identifying pattern besides this is because they use many different things to identify CFW users, or a combination of things.

Anyway, bottom line is, I suggest you do your research before posting a thread like this and misleading users into thinking it's safe when there are signs pointing to the opposite. We don't know anything for sure yet, but telling people it's safe when you don't know is as bad as scaremongering them into thinking it's unsafe.

Actually the cause of the band is likely data reporting to Nintendo. Things such as gameplay history and currently running titles etc are sent to Nintendo if you have these options on and there's plenty in this data to get a pirate/homebrew user banned. Simply put CIA homebrew shows in this history data. .3dsx brew does not. This is why people are using it over the .CIA options in most cases. Though Fuck it let me ban me I want my emulators to have all the available resources of the system.

You know nothing. One anecdote isn't proof. I've also used CIAs and haven't been banned. But that's completely not relevant. Someone who wasn't banned may have used no cias and only homebrew. The conclusion he'd draw would be that homebrew is safe, cias may not be. Someone else who wasn't banned may have only played pokemon games and not mario ones and concluded that's why they didn't ban him. You need to look at big picture to see patterns. Your own experiences do not matter. And sadly nintendo seems to have obfuscated their bans fairly well. I imagine they intentionally didn't ban some people on their list just to throw people off the scent.

And as for people saying the banwave is over, it is. Doesn't mean there can't be another next week. We can try and take precautions but i don't think we know enough to be truly safe.

My 3ds was banned right when it happened in late may,but I got unbanned with a lfcs that's been working for about 2 months now,so I could care less.As for the people who are scared of getting banned because you can't resell the cfw 3ds easily, that's the price you pay for entering the cfw scene in the first place,so either man up and keep the 3ds,unban it with a lfcs when it does get banned, sell it before it gets banned or get a second 3ds and system transfer a stock 3ds to your cfw one for a private seed.

I've had around 30 CIA applications before finding out that I should turn off SpotPass data reporting and Show Friends What You're Playing. Have I been banned? NOPE! CIA homebrew for the win, 3DSX homebrew is way too limited.

I too very strongly prefer installable homebrews (don't even have a "3ds" folder) (and I have analytics enabled too), but hey, freedom of choice is always nice

Rather do all i can to prevent future ban than go on like before even though i wasn't banned. Btw all apps mentioned in your post works for me. Just use arm9 patching in luma if required. ( I use download play to inject hblauncher).
