Going into this splatfest loby it seemed that teams were pretty lopsided almost 70/30 in favor of Ice Cream. Once the game began... man was it lopsided in talent too, I played for team Cake and it was an uphill battle, the first few fights we were massacred. I went on a TEAR shortly after.

After roughly 2hrs15min I established myself as a Cake King, a lonely world it was... until an IC king arrived, 3hrs in
i only saw 5 kings, 3cakes 2ice creams... the ice cream king teams ever beat my teams. the last 3 kings i saw toward the last half our.

I played as team ice cream because my friends wanted me to, even though I prefer cake. We voice called for all 4 hours of the Splatfest and it was pretty fun. Splatoon isn't really my game and I doubt I would have enjoyed the Splatfest if I wasn't playing with my friends on the same team.

There are so many things Splatoon 2 does right, yet they took away such a crucial stat in the results screen and replaced it with something completely useless.

They got rid of the freaking death counter.

I could care less how many times my teammates and opponents used their specials; the death counter was the whole point of seeing how many times those players weren't on the map turfing ink (wasting precious time respawning). Now a guy could get a respectable kill count like 7 kills, but what you wouldn't know is that they died 12 times (a -5 differential). And this absence of a death counter is gone too in ranked mode, just so you know. I checked back when Nintendo was streaming that Splatoon tournament during E3, and it's also replaced with the inferior special ability counter.

Think about it. What serious online multiplayer shooter does not have a death counter? It seems like it should be minor flaw, but it really is an annoying drawback from this sequel. Like you had it in the first game, why not bring it back? And if Nintendo is trying to stress that Splatoon is more of an objective-based game than a free-for-all shooter (which, in fact, many would agree), you would have only had the turfed ink stat beside the player. And hey, what do you know, they've removed that as well :glare: (at least for the Splatfest, Turf War it looks like they're going to have it).

Gone are the days you could be like, "damn that 3 and 12 guy", or, "that 4 and 15 guy did nothing". What do you guys think?

Edit: It also forgives players that play like a battering ram with no brain. That is, going purely for kills, ignoring objectives, and not caring how many times they get splatted. Your teammates will have no idea that you died 15 times on the map, they will only see your 9 kills and get the wrong impression that you're good when you're better off being called a liability. 15 deaths is like 75 seconds you're not on the map if you approximate the respawn time of 5 seconds.

For a game series that is on the verge of trying to get some E-sports attention, removing the death counter isn't a good thing for starters.

Marina's cute, Pearl looks like she has a cragnon unibrow and is a little bitchy. I think they need to tweak her character design or fire her and get a new announcer.

Yeah this is true, they should have kept it. I haven't played a shooter before that doesn't count deaths.. until splatoon 2

See, the special counter does indirectly do what the death counter did do. Like, if somebody on your team has managed to use 10 specials in the space of one Turf War, you know they've inked a LOAD of turf, and haven't died much (since dying kills your special meter). I agree it sucks they took it out, but we can work with what we have.

And regarding the ink stat next to the player. While it doesn't show it, I'm fairly sure it still sorts the players by turf inked. Somebody feel free to call me out here if I'm wrong, but in the time I played yesterday, it wasn't always the person with the most splats on top. So I'm assuming the stat is still used for that.

Anyway, I really enjoyed what I played of the Splatfest. Really sucks nothing carried over to the main game though, it kinda killed my motivation. Kinda felt like it was a waste of effort since I wasn't getting any levels or anything from it. Ah well, it got me used to the controls on Switch, and hype for the Friday release. I suppose that's all one can really ask!

I had fun. Other than the Global Testfire earlier this year, I've never played Splatoon so this was mostly a new experience for me so I didn't do as good as I wanted lol. I kept pressing X to jump and opened the map instead, dammit BotW.
Fiddled with each of the available weapons, think the Roller is my favorite.
I was on Team Ice Cream because my gf told me to be, I don't prefer one over the other but she does lol.
Definitely picking up the game Friday.

You brought up a good point about the special counter being a rough indicator of offloading a bunch of ink. But while this stat would be more useful in turf war than it is for ranked, I still don't see myself actively looking at this stat at the results screen to see how I did compared to the rest.

And, as a counterpoint, some gear abilities you and your teammates are wearing can actually affect/skew the number shown on the special counter (like Special Saver or Special Charge Up), thus reducing the amount of ink killed by your special meter upon death and increasing the rate of your special gauge, respectively. To a lesser effect, gear abilities like Stealth Jump or Quick Respawn can decrease or increase the amount of time you're on the map trying to fill up your special gauge. You would never know that your teammates are wearing these gear abilities because you can't see their gear (at first, unless you stay in the lobby and play them again as an opponent or leave the game and try to find them in the plaza), and obviously since they aren't your opponents, they can't splat you and be able to peek at what they're wearing in the middle of the game. So, how exactly do you know for sure if your team sucks as much as you think? Well, you can't or it's now harder to tell without a death counter.

At some point when you climb the ranks, everyone will have maxed out slots on gear abilities (skewing the special counter number more) and relying on the special counter to still kinda tell you they are working the specials (in addition to inking turf to engage those specials) and helping to win the game doesn't tell you the whole story. Whereas, the death counter well... does, or at least, gives you more information. Again, the special counter is more helpful in turf war than it will ever be in ranked. Especially since, yeah turfing ink is still important in ranked, but in ranked you focus on fulfilling objectives whereas in turf war, you prioritise simply turfing ink to win. And, it sucks, since I assume more people will be playing the ranked modes more than turf war all the time. Why Nintendo thought it was a good idea to get rid of the death counter is beyond me.

As for the Splatfest's absence of a ink stat next to the player, I couldn't find anything on whether indeed they sort players by most turfed ink at the top for each team. So yes, I agree with you that it's probably still there counting in the background and now relies on the order of players to see how you did. I still like the exact numbers though because the more stats the better, but like I said, the number should show up for everyone in regular turf war since in the E3 feed it was there.

For the normal game i dont think so. I do wish there was some death match that are base just on kills.
I know its not something splatoon is known for but it would be cool to add it later on.
I mean, is a game made by nintendo for nintendo, is not focused on violence. Why would they do that if there already exist plethora of games that do have "Team Death match" Just play those games instead. This game is for people who want a alternative to the shooting game genre with a new objective other than killing.

I even dislike it in the other games. Which I actually play, in Black ops II, there many game modes, and even still people only focus on killing. The objective isn't even to kill, Capture the flag, Hardline, bomb disposal, collect dog tags. I know you have to kill eventually but no one is focused on the objective.
