There are so many things Splatoon 2 does right, yet they took away such a crucial stat in the results screen and replaced it with something completely useless.
They got rid of the freaking death counter.
I could care less how many times my teammates and opponents used their specials; the death counter was the whole point of seeing how many times those players
weren't on the map turfing ink (wasting precious time respawning). Now a guy could get a respectable kill count like 7 kills, but what you wouldn't know is that they died
12 times (a -5 differential). And this absence of a death counter is gone too in ranked mode, just so you know. I checked back when Nintendo was streaming that Splatoon tournament during E3, and it's also replaced with the
inferior special ability counter.
Think about it. What serious online multiplayer shooter
does not have a death counter? It seems like it should be minor flaw, but it really is an annoying drawback from this sequel. Like you had it in the first game, why not bring it back? And if Nintendo is trying to stress that Splatoon is more of an objective-based game than a free-for-all shooter (which, in fact, many would agree), you would have only had the turfed ink stat beside the player. And hey, what do you know, they've removed that as well
(at least for the Splatfest, Turf War it looks like they're going to have it).
Gone are the days you could be like, "damn that 3 and 12 guy", or, "that 4 and 15 guy did nothing". What do you guys think?
Edit: It also forgives players that play like a battering ram with no brain. That is, going purely for kills, ignoring objectives, and not caring how many times they get splatted. Your teammates will have no idea that you died 15 times on the map, they will only see your 9 kills and get the wrong impression that you're good when you're better off being called a liability. 15 deaths is like 75 seconds you're not on the map if you approximate the respawn time of 5 seconds.
For a game series that is on the verge of trying to get some E-sports attention, removing the death counter isn't a good thing for starters.
