'Metal Gear' Celebrates Its 30th Anniversary

image.png

Thirty years ago, some Hideo Kojima released a stealth game titled Metal Gear on the MSX2. This would be the beginning of the wildly popular video game series, that will be loved (and hated) by many for years to come, and will turn out to be a personal favorite of mine.

Whatever your thoughts on the series, it has had an undeniably significant impact on the video game industry, effectively setting the bar for stealth games and story-telling in video games.

Users on social media like Facebook and Twitter have been using the hashtag #MG30th to share their thoughts about the game. You can do the same on your favorite social media or down in the comment section below.

So, what was your best (or worst) Metal Gear moment?

I'd love to see Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection on PS4/XO and even the Switch if possible.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

The thing is, this isnt even metal gear solid, its metal gear.
It's hardly even Metal Gear either, it's just a generic zombie game forcibly set in the MGS universe.

Best? Mgs 1 and 3.
Worst? All of mgs 2. And to a lesser extent, 4 for trying to shoehorn and do all this to make raiden look strong like we're supposed to forgive the whiny shit stain he was in 2.

Kojima has such a boner for raiden he even commissioned his own separate game, which was so fucked up in plot, it couldn't even integrate to the plot of the main series like he wanted to. And the only - repeat, ONLY - reason I even want to just watch a long play of it is to see that crazy senator whip his dumb ass.

Oh right, I completely forgot about Metal Gear Rising! I loved that game. I've heard it described as being "much better than it had any right to be", and I think I feel the same way. It looked like some quick-n-dirty spinoff, but I found the combat to be really engaging and challenging. Moves took just the right amount of input coordination to pull off so they didn't feel like they came too easily, but also without feeling convoluted or obtuse. It also had Platinum's patented flash and polish going for it. It was a bit too short, but the Steam version came with all the DLC packed in, including Sam's campaign, which helped me forgive that. (I'm a sucker for extra playable characters.) About the only things I disliked about the game were the challenge VR missions, many of which I thought were unfair or needed memorization-level perfection, and its lack of replayability.

Too bad I never play any MGS game. I am a terrible motion sickness case, even if the chair wobble a little can make me dizzy so I have to stay away from any FPS game. It sound like a good game though.

Well, there isn't any MGS game that is a FPS, so you're probably thinking of a different game/franchise.

EDIT: Though there is a first-person view you use with varying frequency depending on the game.

Metal Gear 1 and 2 where great on the Msx game computer. MGS was really mind blowing when I for the first time saw it.
A that MGS 2 E3 2000 demo was so cool back in the day.

this guy should avoid MGS3D then, limited hardware and devs have to disable 3d to do something.

Annoyed me when ever you enter First Person the 3d turns off, saying that folks class it as superior port because it had some slight texture improvements, but personally think the 3ds version textures look poor and the draw distance is pathetic i mean grass popping up just feet away from you.

i dont get why the HD remasters didnt get the new facial textures, would have been better using them, but saying that the hd ports are just as good using the original textures which back then were great.

Never got into the Metal Gear series myself. Tried it on the Gamecube once. I really should give it another shot.

I think MGS2 needs more love than it got. You know, coming into the series very late, I never really empathized with the hate people had for MGS2. The plot is fuckin' banana-bonkers (which I thought was fun, as part of my enjoyment of the series comes from just how campy it is), but it had its genuinely impactful moments here and there, and I thought it really pulled its weight in the final act of the game. Its message on censorship in particular is something I feel is still relevant today, even if it was, as I said, absolutely looney toons.

I played through mgs snake eater 3d and it made me cry at the end... it was very story driven and made me feel like I was james bond or something...
why, did snakes master have to die at the hands of her student?? and that twist at the end... oooohhhh...
it made me wish more games were ported over to the n3ds or now the switch but, that's never going to happen unless nintendo buys mgs from kojima or konomi or whoever owns the rights to mgs and makes a proper port on the switch... motion controlled gun shooting anyone??

The best game that Kojima wasn't involved in was Snake's Revenge. I fucking love that game and the gameplay was a little like Metal Gear Solid. But yeah I didn't play any of the others until Metal Gear Solid. I played a demo for MGS 4 a few years ago but wasn't a fan, I thought the series must have taken a bad turn at some point.

Happy belated 30th birthday, Metal Gear! I love this franchise so much that I own nearly all versions of the Metal Gear titles sans the collector editions and bought all playable Metal Gear titles for my PS Vita. This year also happened to be the first time I've ever played and finished Metal Gear 1 and 2.
