If you feel hot air being blown from the back then you know it's cooling properly.
It's not the perfect way to tell but it's at least a way to tell that the heatsinks are hot (which should be the case as they take the heat from the CPU/GPU ;p)

I know this has been resolved, but I also have to say that replacing the thermal paste is a must for any original model 360 these days. Mine like everyone has described sounded like a jet taking off whenever a game was played (even if installed to the HDD)

So I applied new thermal paste to my Falcon 360 last night (built in Q2 of 2008, I bought in July of that year) GPU/eDRAM stuff was 100% dried up, it was solid as a rock and took me quite a while to carefully scrape/chip off most of it, CPU stuff was almost just as bad, but still just every so slightly tacky still, but of course still needed a plastic card to scrape it all off.

Am I the only one who feels nostalgia already for the 360? Especially for the original model, and the early years of the system?

I love the phatty's design.
The Slim is also quite neat but the phat had faceplates.
Some extremely nice Eternal Sonata ones <З

And well, it just looks nice.
I agree, I had been using a Slim for a little while now, they are neat but I have little to no nostalgia for them.

Waiting on a replacement case from an 360 elite off ebay, mines been opened up a few times in the past to clean the DVD drive, and quite a few screw posts and clips have broken. Also waiting on a blue talismoon fan. Makes me sad, because I wanted to keep it original, but it would make me sadder if I left it in such disrepair. looked into a aftermarket case like the XCM ones, but they are all far too expensive, manufacturing tolerances on them pretty bad too.

As for faceplates, I've had a Forza 2 faceplate on mine for as long as I can remember. unfortunately like allot of faceplates, the USB flap broke on mine a few years back.

The 360 is so easy to disassemble.
Done hundreds and you couldn't tell if I opened it or not.

As for the faceplates.
I don't know what you're doing with it but the USB cover never broke for me.

Nothing out of normal use really, I do use the USB ports allot. As for opening the console, it's not as straight forward your first time opening it, and that's when most of the damage was done.

Neither did I follow one.
I just did it on curiosity ;p
Then you're definitely better than me when taking apart consoles. That and/or I just really suck at it. lol

Like when I cleaned out my PS3 Slim, and changed the thermal paste on that, the fan connector ripped off the board with the solder pads, luckily it seems like a common issue with people open those up and doing what I was doing so there were a few different guides on how to fix it. Thankfully I had a soldering iron, and that there were three solder points on the flip side of the motherboard that I could use to solder in a repair.
