OK this time I really have had it with eBay and PS3s now!

I found a DECHA00A debug station on eBay and bought it. I paid a fair amount of money for it on the understanding that it worked perfectly etc.

When it arrived it was warranty sealed but the Blu ray drive didn't take any discs in. I messaged the seller who gave me the usual "it worked fine before, send it back blah blah blah" and implied it was because I'd updated from 3.55?? Eventually they did reluctantly agree to give a partial refund to cover the cost of repairing it.

So I had to open the console to repair the blu ray drive and on plugging the drive back in I got a load of corruption on the screen and the console wouldn't boot. Since then I have been able to get it to sporadically boot but it mainly goes to a black screen until I do a video reset. It has crashed once with video corruption on the screen and needed a hard reset.

The thing I don't get is it seemed fine before and all I have done is remove the blu ray drive, I haven't been near the board or anything for it to break like that and the seller will just say "you've taken it apart now and you might have broken it yourself or swapped the board etc"

Does this sound like it could possibly be anything other than the start of YLOD or something?

Maybe you could say I should have taken the return while I could but it seemed like such a simple fix it wasn't worth the trouble :(

It's jacked, keeps freezing, thing is ruined. Tried different hard drives, nothing helps. Can't believe it because it seemed to be working fine before I removed the blu ray drive??

Call me crazy, but it might be the fact that its a debug model. (Worst comes to worst buy a new bluray drive.)

Well I've sorted the Blu Ray drive now but the bigger issue is that the rest of the console no longer functions...

did you take all the precautions one should take when going inside a console, like grounding yourself and all that? a static charge might have messed something up

Keep fiddling with it,worst comes to worse threaten a chargeback.

Honestly I'm not sure how I feel about doing that because it only started having problems after I opened it. I literally have only touched the Blu Ray drive but how could they prove I haven't swapped the board out or done something stupid to break it or something?

Yes I did and I have completely disassembled loads of PS3s without an issue before, including popping the IHSs etc so I don't understand how this could have happened

It's just crashed in safe mode, had it sat there for a minute and it's frozen up

I have no idea what to do because it's quite a lot of money I've spent on it and it doesn't even seem like something a reball would fix, and they would probably refuse to return it because it's been opened

Lost all HDMI output now

So apparently the problem i have according to the guy who normally fixes my PS3s (when I can't!) is the GLOD, similar to the YLOD in that it requires a reball to fix it.

Either I was the unluckiest guy in the world getting a YLOD the day I received the console or it started freezing up before it was sold and they decided to sell it while it still worked... apparently it was one they'd been using for a while rather than they just had it in to sell

If it's a fat PS3, nope, it's definitely YLOD.

Damn. Thought so, I've already been in touch with my PS3 guy and he says he can fix it. Still disappointing though.

On a side note, what an absolute bell end this seller is, I'm thinking of negging them just for the threatening messages I've received back...

I'd take a debug PS3 that needs a reball over nothing at any day.

True, it's just the extra cost I wasn't accounting for when I bought it :(

Unless he does a REAL reball it's gonna break again in 6 months. Most people just call a reflow a "reball", which isn't a cure but just a temporary fix. Be wary of that ;)

Yep indeed, thanks for the heads up, I know a guy who does real reballs though so it's all good :)

Maybe that was the reason he was selling. Seen the same scenario couple of times before. He than blames you for doing stuff you have not bla,bla,bla...
But hey, do a real reball, and you will have a debug station

I'm guessing so, it must have started crashing before they sent it. And she's being way too defensive if she isn't hiding something. The lady doth protest too much, methinks.

Anyways, now I've stripped the blu ray drive down at least that works, so when I get it reballed it'll be a pretty sweet system and hopefully I shouldn't even have to worry about YLOD :D

I'm just pissed I paid for one in full working order and good condition and got one with YLOD that's worth next to nothing...

Yup the last 4 PS3s I've bought off eBay have been busted!! Partly due to be being too trusting/a mug but buying PS3s off eBay is a minefield.

It's exactly the same layout as my CECHCs on the inside, but it's got a COK001 board so I'm guessing it's just based on a CECHA

I would love to tinker with one of the dev models, but here, they are like 150-200€, waaay too much. All the consoleswe get here are from Switzerland, Austria and Germany, all thrown away or bough off of the flea market, stored in some basement, just trash
