(the curse of the unfinished translation that plagues all the Tales Games. Lots of teams with broken promises ... anyway ... the translation is probably what the author wanted, even if its not perfect, otherwise, everything should be released, but that won't happen ... it looks sincere enough to be enjoyable, the only incomplete translation I ever played was Super Robot Wars, that series is a moot point, its like trying to do a fan translation of Street Fighter on the SNES, that is until recently with the vita english ports of super robot wars ... still very happy with the translation that is released, hopefully I don't get finished before the other translation groups claims are completed, but if I do, oh well, the games over and done, Legend of Heroes does not have a high replayability)
The reason this fan translation was abandoned and then leaked is because no one wanted to fix it, it was just that bad. The original writers of Zero would absolutely hate to see their work butchered like this.
I'm not telling you not to play it, but stop defending it as if it's a good translation just because it's complete. It's not a good translation and ruins the Zero as a work.

I'm just glad I was able to play this in advance while the current ZnK Translation is being worked on! And about about the whole "terrible translation" thing, sure we already understood that this isn't a perfectly crafted work but it still doesn't change the fact that this game is pretty much playable, and sometimes its just what everyone wanted, heck its actually one of the better one's out there, unlike what people are releasing these days that are just partially patched/made.

I just checked out the fan trans leak (only about an hour or two) and i have to say the writing is decent, but not nearly as good a what XSEED did with the Kiseki games. Sometimes there are strange Japanese sounding metaphors and some sentences feel stiff or stranglely structured, but sometimes the textflow is quite natural. I've seen much worse, even from official translations (looking back at the SNES or PSX era). It's definitely better than the Gagharv translation. XD
It's definitely not butchering the original work. Still i don't know if i'll play this version. I'm very picky when it comes to good translations (ATLUS ruined Persona 5 with their soulless translation for me... to name a more recent title). Well, i still have to play Sora 3rd...

Nonetheless, i think the fan trans leak is very well playable and the writing is good enough to enjoy the story. If by the time i've beaten Sora 3rd the cleaned up fan trans isn't out yet i may give this one a shot.

It may be off topic, but: Goddammit is this game amazing, even with a less polished fan translation. I understand why this is regarded as the best Eiyuu Densetsu game in Japan (or second best next to Ao).

It's not a cleaned up fan translation, it's a completely different group that translated the game from the ground up.
The one that released was pretty much unfinished and unedited. It might translate the whole game but it's riddled with errors.
I'm not gonna stop you from playing it if you really want to, but it's not what the game deserves, and does not reflect the quality of the original Japanese at all.

Dood give it a rest, this leaked patch is playable even in its current state and you can't deny that.
I mean we get it, you hate/despise this patch to death and it deserves to be buried back to whence it came, but here's the thing, that is your personal problem and not ours, we actually care less about it being imperfect as it is since we know what we're getting ourselves into.
Come to think of it, the TiTS SC on the psp has a fair amount of imperfections as well (not as bad as this but you get the idea) and that didn't bother me at all, all it needs is a little bit of imagination of what the texts actually meant and you're good to go.

Your response to me was completely unnecessary and I literally said I'm not going to make anyone stop playing it. I'm just informing people that there is an actually good fan translation coming and this patch does in no way represent the quality of the original Japanese game. And people like you who get mad at anyone criticizing a bad translation are the reason we get bad translations in the first place.

TiTS SC PSP has a few issues because it's a huge game, but they continue to patch and update the translations for FC and SC for their steam releases.
This fan patch that got leaked was unfinished and unedited and is pretty much completely abandoned, leaving the game a mess of mistranslations and bad writing.

They're not comparable.

Still doesn't change the fact that you're criticizing an imperfect patch for being in imperfect quality smh..

Everyone gets what your trying to say, but do you really need to constantly remind everyone in every given moment just to get your point across?

Are you godamn serious? Fans are the reason why we get bad fan translations?? Really now? Ohhhkaay~ I don't even dood... I don't even..

I wasn't comparing SC to ZnK since that was besides my point, all I'm trying to say that any mistranslation can be remedied with a little bit of thought ~

I ain't mad at you or your criticism perse ~ but seriously dood give it a rest ~

@Zander1995

In the other thread here you posted that this leaked PSP patch is totally seperate from the project that is still in progress right now. But from what i understood this BETA patch is basically a very early draft (around late 2014) of the other team (let's call it "first team") which dropped the project because of an internal argument with the project leader late 2016, which was then picked up by the current team to edit and rewrite it. Isn't that correct? So this BETA patch is in fact a very early draft of what is currently still being worked on.

If the BETA is not related to the first team nor the current team working on it, who did this BETA patch?

I'm just interested.

@thread:

I'm not denying that this patch feels extremely unfinished (well it's not to be expected from an unfinished product). BUT: So far it's better than nothing. I'm glad we have this BETA and can decide for ourselves if we want to wait for the finished product or not. Until now we didn't even get status reports from the current translation team for months. I know they aren't obligated to do this, but having no confirmation if the project is dead or not is an uncertainty no one likes. Now we at least have SOMETHING, while we can wait for the finished product. It's much better than having nothing and not knowing if we will ever be able play Zero in english or not. If by any chance the current team gets shut down by lawyers or drops the project (something like this happened to other projects in the past) we would end up without anything. This way we can at least play it in (flawed) english but perfectly understand the story and dialogues if push comes to shove... If that doesn't sound reasonable enough, i don't know what does.

I'm criticizing it because it's a bad patch and not what the game deserves because I'm a fan of the series. Being accepting and fine with terrible translations are why we get them. I'm not going to give it a rest because I want other fans of the series to wait until the much better translation is out because it's what this game deserves.

The team has a post that explains it. The patch release had nothing to do with them, and the reason it's so important that people ignore it is specifically because the team has been told their efforts to release a good translation aren't worth it by people who are perfectly fine with a shoddy unfinished patch.

Edit: They also had a translation update like three weeks before the leak of the years old patch, so they haven't gone months without updating.

That particular version of the patch was never intended for release. However, it's not wrong to say that the work itself is related. At this point, I think geofronts team have made it clear that their editing work is based on this translation made from the old team.

OMFG.. Just Stop seriously ~
You've already occupied a full page with your propaganda~

And No, its not because of arseholes who wanted a quick English patch the reason why Fan Translations in general gets released, as you know (or obviously not) there are multiple factors why things like this happens and specifically with this one, it didn't got released because the team behind it gave up on it and NOT because of people who pressured them on releasing the patch, and you already knew that this was a leaked patch so why would you even say that its because of people like me became the reason for this getting released?!

I'm a fan of this series so trust me, the last thing that I would want from a trails game is terrible translations (as an example: Nayuta no Kiseki's Translation was just God Awful) BUT! The translation for ZnK by the old team was more than serviceable for me personally, so until the Better English Patch comes around I will be playing this until that happens~

Again dood give it a godamn rest, people have been waiting for a playable ZnK and they got it so why not let them enjoy it for what it is instead of being a buzz kill?

My post never said they weren't connected to the old translation, but that the patch leak had nothing to do with them.

@riesyukira why do you care so much about my opinions? Just ignore me. I'm just stating my opinion and warning people away from a shoddy leaked patch that the current team never wanted released. You can just ignore me or block me if you don't want to see me talk.

I'm not being a buzz kill, I'm informing people there's a better patch coming that will actually make the game worth playing in English instead of this leaked patch that was released without permission.

But you are being an obnoxious buzz kill.
You're shitting up the thread at this point. If you didn't notice, half the posts are yours repeating the exact same bullet points
"this sucks this sucks yadda yadda anyone thinking otherwise isn't a true fan, this shouldn't exist"
There's a line between stating an opinion and going full Jehova Witness propagandist every two posts.

And then you're having the gall to shut up someone else asking about a PSP patch for 3rd and say he's being off-topic.
Or should I say he's getting in the way of your topic derail?
Like, did you even see how are you behaving yourself here?

This patch definitely warrants discussion.
It's a way to play the first Crossbell game in English to completion, and anything helps considering how kanji-heavy it is even for someone trying to play it in Japanese.
It's fan-sub tier but not Hong Kong bootleg sub tier by any stretch.
It's almost complete.
It's not machine translated.
It's not riddled with game breaking bugs.
People didn't even know about its existence.
It's as "ruining the game forever" as the average subbed youtube videos for these games (sometimes translated through Chinese and yet people eat that up because they crave the game)

People are shelling dollars for official localizations much worse than this if it means they get to play the damn thing in English and understand the general plot.
People other than you can have different preferences.
On this very forum, people are happy enough to play menu translations of games they love.

Who are you to tell those people they're
1/ not true fans
2/ "encourage bad translations" (or are you entitled the masses getting behind your boycotts and preferences and anyone not helping you is your enemy?)
3/ better pretend this doesn't exist shoo shoo scram already go away

It wasn't really released "without permission" if it was a cancelled early draft that went nowhere and the "bad" translator was okay with it (but somehow we're supposed to care about him if it serves your agenda that this shouldn't EXIST).

You're being really transparent at your attempts to derail and poison this discussion, and spreading misinformation about this translation (incomplete, unauthorized...) and even stifling discussion of other hacks while you deem the OTHER Zero no Kiseki translation (which you made a point being a separate project) must become the central discussion focal point.

You're also being a hindrance to other people asking about this patch, or how much of it is playable.
You're doing a major disservice to the other translation project for this same game (which covers the PC and PSP versions so that's already a plus).

Do you throw fits like this at people daring to play the Evo versions too if, god forbid, they're not to your personal taste?

SRW V wasn't a port?
I'm confused as to what you mean, do you mean the official translation? I bought the game on release and while the translation is pretty good, it has some typos here and there (I guess they rushed in order to release it at the same time as in Japan).

-----
Edit:

And yeah, as GHANMI said above, sometimes a not so perfect translation will do the job, as long as people get to understand what it's going on, it is better than not understanding it at all. Not saying translations shouldn't be as accurate as possible, they should, but it becomes pretty hard with asian games due to cultural differences and terms that do not exist in other languages (as far as I know, Japanese, Korean and Chinese novels/comics/games have similar issues when being translated to English).

About the Zero no Kiseki patch: Is it somehow possible to implement it into the PC version of the game?
The other group is already doing a patch for the PC version of the game, and as stated before, they're Editing the translation from this patch that was released without their permission.

No point in doing an inferior patch port when a group is already doing one.
