Oh no we know how that all works. In fact, freeshop exists because we know how that works. I'm not entirely sure what you mean when you say "what kind of messages are sent to Ninty".

Do you mean like eshop-wise? or like, something else?
I mean whatever communication between the machine and Nintendo's server. Is the communication encrypted? Which communication is using PGP method?
Sorry too many questions, I'm really curious.
Cheers,

Cheers,

Okay, now I kinda understand. This isn't really the thread to ask about that in though, and as much as I'd like to help, I'm no expert on that subject matter. My suggestions are to make a thread in hardware/cfw sections, and to maybe drop a post in the freeshop thread asking about it. Other than that, I guess you could wait for somebody else to reply here (pinging @GerbilSoft because they seem knowledgable about this), or google it. Sorry I can't be of more help!

I do think it would fit into research, as although some people may use it as other means, the people doing the engineering are mostly hobbyists

A.) Illegally distributed (Roms, ISOs, etc) or B.) Illegally Obtained (ripping, decrypting, etc). The bootrom falls under B, and it can enable more of either A or B depending on how it's used.

tl;dr: It doesn't fall under fair use because we're not creating new content with it, and in our case "reverse engineering" does not fall under research, especially since we aren't modifying the code, and if we somehow AREN'T violating Fair Use, since Ninty is only allowing the bootrom to be distributed and used as part of the SOC for a 3ds, getting access to it on computer, or torrenting, or using it for sighax, or decrypting games with it is a big no no. Yet we do it anyways because it's fun poking in places you don't belong.

Here's where things start to differ from the US. My knowledge is also mostly about my country, but we do have to follow european directives. Distribution may be illegal directly, yes, but extrating and dumping it are not.

Ripping, decrypting, etc are not illegal. In fact I remember having in my school books a text on how we even have the right for a refund if we bought a media support that activelly didn't allow for private copies. And it went even further, in 2015 we even passed a tax for artists to 'balance' such right to follow an european directive that was made into law in 2004 (about, although there better sources, just that they are in portuguese).

Also do note that most TOS have no legal binding here, because a) they generally follow US law, b) they generally don't follow local law, c) they are contracts without legally binding signatures, celebrated after the customer purchased the equipment / piece of software to restrict use on itself, which, by the eyes of the law, is seen as already property of the customer, purchased unconditionally (aside conditions dictated by law).

Communication between 3DS and Nintendo's servers is generally https, with certificate validation. (This prevents spoofing with a self-signed certificate.) This makes it hard to do anything by e.g. putting a proxy between 3DS and Nintendo (man-in-the-middle attack), but it is possible to hook into the relevant code on the system itself (with CFW).

wait... you tried derrek's installer, got an error AND didn't brick?
Yes, I have tried Derrek's installer, and did not brick. Only an error. I decided to stick with Plailect's guide to go through the issue instead as I installed B9S (better route of sighax) instead as it was a success.

So from what I understand (Correct me if I'm wrong), since I'm one of those who accidentally updated to 11.3 before installing cfw, I had to wait for a new exploit to be released in order to get it.

Now that sighax has been discovered, I can install cfw on N3DS XL without downgrading by following 3ds guide, which was previously required to install A9LH.

PS: I already have soundhax installed.

It's better to learn godmode9 first than to get comfortable with hourglass9. If you practice and learn a more advanced tool, you'll be much better off than having to transition from something as basic as hourglass9. Besides, godmode9 has many more features and is more supported than hourglass9 from what I've read from the github pages.
Does GodMode9 actually have any sort of nand backup/restore?
If it does, it's hidden. Learning some niche homebrew app on a dying platform in no way would make me better off. I'll stick with HourGlass9 for my nand backup/restore needs, no reason not to.

I'll respond to the other stuff in a little while, because I'm pretty busy today. But since this is quick, I'll do this now.

If it does, it's hidden. Learning some niche homebrew app on a dying platform in no way would make me better off. I'll stick with HourGlass9 for my nand backup/restore needs, no reason not to.

Literally on the first screen, it's the home button and then "more...". Pic under the spoiler. To restore it, you navigate to your nand.bin, and then select it with the a button and choose "restore nand backup". If you're still confused, the guide has a page all about it.

Second, godmode9 isn't niche. It's literally THE tool for nand backups and decryption, and it's replacing decrypt9 completely. Hourglass9 development might die out too in favor of gm9, you never know. Besides, gm9 has many more features and capabilities than either decrypt9 or hg9, plus the added convenience of file browsing, hex editing, and oodles more.

Finally, the 3ds is hardly a dying platform now. Ninty's about to drop the new 2ds, and now that Sighax is out, we've pretty much unlocked the full potential of the systems. If anything, this is practically the peak of the 3ds homebrew wise, with far too many new homebrew project threads starting for me to even keep track of.

Tl;dr: it's super easy to backup/restore nand and instructions for common gm9 tasks are on the guide, gm9 is the new main decryption tool over d9 and it might even replace hg9 at some point, and we've just unlocked practically all the potential of the 3ds with more to come so it's hardly dying.

Also just FYI for other people reading this thread, if you need help extremely badly, it's better to pm me since I'll be able to respond more frequently there due to projects/life getting in the way

Sure I found it after you told me how. It's not on the first screen though, it's not visible. It is two menus into gm9 and you'd only know that if you've been there before or were told how to get there.

HG9 just seems more user friendly and robust. GM9 is a file explorer that allows you to make a single nand backup which you could then move around to make more, while HG9 allows you to make/restore many nand backups without moving around any of them. I don't see the point in pushing a single homebrew utility over all others, it's better to have many homebrew utilities developed by many developers. Variety and choice are never a bad thing.

As far as niche, it is. What percentage of 3ds family devices are home brewed? It's an abysmal percent, which makes all homebrew for 3ds niche.

If you're still on 11.3 or below, and you don't own a dsiware hackable game, and you still want sighax, just go ahead and install a9lh through soundhax or some other homebrew entry point, and then upgrade to boot9strap after that. It saves time AND effort!
since 11.3 still has an arm9 exploit, can we not just install b9s from the exploit?

Well, there is no question in your post and you typed 11.3 where it is easy to get Boot9Strap on.

Why do you repost that? :-)

I was asking if what I said in my post about getting cfw is correct.
If you are on 11.3, everything should be fine.
Happy hacking! Make sure you follow the 3ds.guide carefully to avoid bricks.

If you are on 11.4 and want Boot9Strap, you need to either have a second console and do a DSiWare game injection (check the guide) or wait for the release of NTRboothax / MagnetHax / SleepHax / whatever it will be called (again check the guide)! :-)

I myself ended up exchanging my 11.4 3DS back to Walmart for a 3DS that is on 11.2. (I'm far to lazy to do a hardmod even though I have the skill set to be able to do so.)

With sighax the possibilities are endless now, as long as you follow the guide that has been posted, bricks should be at a mimimal. I had a shlight deviation from said guide and still turned out perfectly fine. but this wasnt my first time hacking a Nintendo product.

Guys I don't think it's the right place, but I'll ask anyway: is it possibile to create a cia from a title folder copied from another 3DS?
