it would be cool if it was permanant by using something like region hax so that noobs could have region free more easily
Not a good idea. if game uses different MCP hook for language then it will probably freeze or crash whole Wii U.
Maybe if @OP makes even better code then somebody would implement it into Mocha CFW, but for now launching System Settings, and various system apps+games result in a instant crash.

Sadly it freezes when I try other apps like Friend list or eshop.

Thats a terrible idea as a good few noobs semi bricked/bricked their Wiiu's using region hax. Did you not read all the problems people had in the region hax thread.

Many thanks for this homebrew, and for making it open-source, @::Phoenix:: , and I'm glad to read it works with NES Remix Pack (USA game on EUR console). Would it work with Wii VC games, like Pikmin, for which the USA version doesn't work on a EUR console?

Would it be possible to integrate this into a CFW, e.g. Haxchi or CBHC, to save the step of having to run the homebrew first?

I tested a few games with this too on a Japanese Wii U.

Most worked however Kirby and the Rainbow Curse along with Pikmin 3 didn't work both remained in Japanese.Otherwise everything worked fine.

Hello, i have a question if you don't mind.

i am running iosu hack.
Afaik it doesnt allow region free gaming.
So if i use this and download a game from another region will it work?

Or to have region free gaming, will i have to use another cfw?

Thanks

You will need region free patches from a custom firmware, otherwise the Wii U will not even run the game. My app has only kernel privileges and cannot enable region free launching on its own.

NTSC version of Mario Super Sluggers (Wii VC title running from Wii U) does not work on a PAL Wii U.
I used Spiik to change the region to USA (language set to english) and then ran the VC game from the Wii U main menu. Goes straight to black screen. Doesn't work.

Spiik will not work as it only works in wiiu mode when you boot a wii VC title the game loads into a custom vWii and clears all wiiu code out of the memory so spiik is cleared out before the game loads and as spiik is removed from memory it obviously won't work lol. For that very reason any wiiu homebrew will not work once you load vWii.

Hi! This is a useful app! Thanks for it!

When I saw it, I thought it was like the "Luma Locale Switcher" on the Nintendo 3DS, Do you thing that Spiik may work for specific Games / Apps? i just ask because, I'm from Mexico, and there are some games that it's great to play in Spanish (like Animal Crossing, or The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild) But when it comes to play Super Smash Bros... I Always need to play in english (Spain Spanish isn't very cool here) and I'm always switching languages on the System Config but sometimes it's a very long waste of time.

Thank's anyway! and keep the good work! :D

For whatever reason I decided to test a bunch of games with Spiik today to see what would happen. I have a US system and I'm trying to learn Japanese, so I tested both American and Japanese games to see what would happen.

TL;DR Of the games I tested with Spiik, Pikmin 3, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Fast Racing Neo and Twilight Princess were the only ones that will respond to your language settings without issue.

Red = crash
Orange = game has issues
Black = game doesn't change at all with Spiik enabled
Green = Spiik changes language successfully
Blue = Spiik changes languages successfully on games that default to your console language (ex. My JP copy of Pikmin 3 turns to English on my US system without Spiik enabled)

JP Game -> Region JP, Lang JP
Star Fox Zero -> Same as without spiik - text is in japanese, VO for intro is in english, all other voices are silent. Without spiik the japanese voices will play in stages for ~1/2 a second before cutting off, but don't play at all with spiik enabled.
Star Fox Guard -> voices in game cut off like in SF Zero without spiik, Japanese text

Twilight Princess HD -> all in Japanese
Pikmin 3 -> all in Japanese (intro voice over is in English because there is no Japanese VO)

Splatoon -> gets caught in boot loop

JP Game -> Region JP, Lang US

Splatoon -> stuck in boot loop

JP Game -> Region US, Lang JP
Splatoon -> runs normally in Japanese

US Game -> Region JP, Lang JP
WWHD -> stays in English
Fast Racing NEO -> turns to Japanese
botw -> text stays in english
Saanic Bum -> text actually in japanese, but voices silent
Mario Kart 8 -> gets caught in boot loop
DKC Tropical Freeze -> runs fine in Japanese
Smash Bros -> black screen after intro screen fades
Sonic Lost World*** -> still in english, but the warning message on the gamepad after the boot sequence is in Japanese for some reason ‾\_(ツ)_/‾ (not sure if this was true when testing Region US, Lang JP)
Xenoblade X -> game runs normally in English
Mario 3D World -> stuck in boot loop... and the background music doesn't loop properly for some reason

US Game -> Region US, Lang JP
Sonic Boom -> plays normally in English
Mario Kart 8 -> plays normally in English
Pikmin 3 -> switches to Japanese
Xenoblade X -> plays normally in english
Mario 3D World -> plays normally in english
Smash Bros. -> plays normally in english
Sonic Lost World -> plays normally in english
ZombiU -> plays normally in english
