Is there a way to fix this? I haven't kept up with cfw/gateway and updated gateway emunand and now just get a black screen.

You'd need a nand image of your system previous to 11.3, otherwise wait for gateway update its coming soon™

You could go the a9lh+luma route too but not sure you'd be able to keep your old emunand in this case

As netosvk said, install a9lh and Luma (follow https://3ds.guide), then you can access your data. You could use sysupdater to downgrade the emuNAND once you can get into it.
Remember not to boot into Gateway sysNAND mode on 11.3 or else your a9lh will be removed.

Or you can recreate emunand from your sysnand if you don't have any .cia games installed. Don't forget to backup and restore sd card contents, thats where your red card games saves are stored.

You don't need to install a9l, just launch luma using your current entrypoint (mset, menuhax, etc., including a9l if you do have it installed).

hey guys ive been MIA from the 3ds hacking scene for quite some time...
my current situation: japanese N3DS LL with 8.1J sysnand, and 9.5 gateway3ds emuNAND. I believe the firmware on the gateway cart is 3.3 ultra.

How do I go about updating my gateway3ds firmware to the latest one (i believe it is 3.7.2 somebody correct me if im wrong), and safely updating my emunand to the safest latest version (i think its 11.2 somebody correct me if im wrong). Ive tried to look into all this new cfw stuff but honestly I don't wana start all over and dont wana have to deal with other bullshit if you get what I mean. any experts can help me out?

EDIT: before starting anything, backup any saves from the Gateway cart by following https://gbatemp.net/threads/importing-gateway-saves-to-cia-games.425743/

Gateway does not work with the latest version. You can either use Luma with the same exploit you use to enter Gateway mode, or install a9lh with Luma for a better exploit. In both cases you won't be able to use Gateway again until they update their stuff. If you go a9lh, it's important not to set it up to boot Gateway (sysNAND mode) as booting into it will brick or remove a9lh leaving you stranded in an unhackable firmware (everyone is hoping Gateway finally address this in their next update).

Yes, currently CFWs that supports booting 11.3 are Luma3DS, Corbenik and ReiNand

I made theme with gateway dragon with clock and attached GW logo to it + lower screen blue with chains.

I think you talk about save files
In setting you can hide them and choose type of save for game that would be created

No sav files. I only have a few of these and they do also show up ob my computers file explorer.

They are all 4kb files.
