Solutions to problems not yet in first post.

1) try to boot without the sdcard. if this works fine, then the issue is either corrupt luma configuration, or corrupt sdcard. restore sdcard from pc backup, onto a different card.
2) deleting the luma3ds config files from the sdcard can fix luma3ds not starting, but if it happens a second time, switch sdcards unless you can reproduce it reliably by following the same steps. in this case report to luma3ds devs unless the step that causes this is installing a CIA.

if you get an error or a problem WHILE following the guide, follow the directions, and DO NOT PANIC. It really does say how to handle everything. do not skip steps.

If you followed the guide exactly, and have problems, corruption of some sort is to blame, and this corruption was not caused by arm9hax.

This isn't common enough an issue to really address, but I will think it over and research it to see just how common it is.
All of the issues I tackled I saw multiple threads (≥3) about. With basically the same silly idea of removing A9LH as the cure. So I made this sticky in reply to those issues.

Interesting note, I've noticed these threads have actually slowed down!
Common misconseption: "*stuff*! I should update my SysNAND with a gateway payload!"
Every single time I try to get near Gateway, I am met with the worst hostility in my life. I just avoid touching Gateway issues

But your dedication to helping people is what lead you to this kind of stuff in the first place. I dunno what is special about gateway since i never had it, but you can't back down. (But i understand if is for reasons like your stress) :)

3 main issues with gateway.
1) no 11.3 support
2) really shoddy downgrade method.
3) does not protect firm so gw sysnand 11.3 removes a9lh.

I stopped using gateway on one of the 11 ios versions. there was no real reason. I just wanted to use cfw instead. all games and saves transferred over to cfw aside from my etrian odyssey 4 save which got corrupted somehow even on gateway. my favorite 3ds game too. grrr :P

oh, if u, @Crystal the Glaceon, was saying let people use gateway if they want, I agree. I've never tried to convince someone not to. I was just telling my experience.
It's more that the gateway issues really aren't the same as the ones I am dealing with here.
This thread was made during a time when people were making several threads a day suggesting removing A9LH would somehow fix their issue and or the it was the cause of their issue.
So I made this thread to stop those threads from becoming common practice. Interestingly enough, I have seen a massive drop in those threads since this got stickied. I am not sure if it's this thread alone, but I like to think it helped.

Now the Gateway issue is a completely different issue. This issue actually causes A9LH to get removed, which honestly warrants a thread on it's own.

Can you get custom firmware from another 3DS and put it on your 3ds? eg: if I get 11.3 on his 3ds and put the .cia on my 3ds will i have 11.3 or 11.4 still???

No. For starters, a 3DS CFW is not a CIA. Second, the firmware itself isn't installed by a single CIA, there are many CIAs, one for each title. Finally, how would you even "Put a CIA on a 3DS and it'll change firmware"? The firmware is stored on the internal storage. Putting a CIA on the SD card would do nothing.

This actually isn't the thread for this kind of question, this is a troubleshooting guide to help show examples of proper troubleshooting.
But to answer this question because I am a good person. You can not transfer a CFW from one 3DS to another 3DS. You can however setup a CFW on both 3DS's, then do a system transfer afterwards.
CIAs can not be properly transferred as the system only recognized signed games. So only legit CIAs and games you paid for can be transferred.

I am currently watching the scene for common issues brought up with b9s. Obviously this thread is slowly loosing it's value since A9LH has been replaced, but it still be updated.

Do you have the boot.firm on the root of your SD card from the latest Luma release? I'm betting you don't.
