I just want to start out by saying that I get it if you don't like breakable weapons. I don't like breakable weapons either. If you think BOTW is a bad game because of breakable weapons, all the power to you. I just want you to understand that if weapons did not break in BOTW, we would all be complaining about something else.

First of all, please understand (heh), BOTW is beyond an open world game. Skyrim aint got shit on BOTW's open world. In Skyrim, if you go up against monsters that are too strong, it's over. You will get your ass kicked, and there is nothing you can do about it. This is because Skyrim is an RPG. It has skills and levels. Skyrim may call itself an open world, but that open world is not accessible all at once. It is partitioned into areas meant for different levels, and if you go into the wrong area, it will either be way too easy and offer pitiful rewards, or be impossible.

BOTW is not like that. You can go straight to a difficult area and thrive, and the game is built around this. Very soon in the game you are given your objectives, and you can choose to head off towards any boss you want, even Ganon. Unlike Skyrim, the game is meant to be playable and FUN regardless of which direction you go. It does this by changing the resources available to match the strength of the surrounding area. All you have to do is find a high level weapon in a high level area, and bam, you are on the same playing field as the area's monsters. Well, not quite. You still won't have many hearts, but that isn't a big deal, as nearby foods can boost those hearts beyond your current max.

So why not keep the game that way, but stop weapons from breaking? Remember what I said about going to an area too easy in Skyrim? If the developers did this, anybody who found a powerful weapon off the bat would ruin the rest of the game for themselves. Nothing would be a challenge. And so weapons have to break, and they have to break quick enough that stocking up on powerful weapons and then steamrolling through and easy section is not an option.

You might ask, why not just give me a single unbreakable weapon and then make every area the same difficulty. Wouldn't that be equivalent? Yes, but BOTW tries to keep just a bit of linearity to add a bit more meaning to the world. You know how in MMOs once you get the flying mount all the details in the game become pointless? BOTW wants to give players the option, and some incentive to stay on the intended path, while also letting more adventurous types go wherever they want. For this reason, the difficult areas are made initially intimidating to try to keep players on the path. You don't start with many hearts, and sometimes it can be hard to find that powerful weapon you need to break in to a difficult area. Some enemies, like guardians, are extremely difficult until you get the right equipment. It's kind of like how the horses in the game will follow the game's paths automatically. Link has the ability to climb any mountain, but it can look stupid, Link just going in a straight line through the map, past all the roads, characters, and towns the devs put effort into, so they had horses go on roads to incentivize going the intended route, while still letting the player go an unintended route if desired.

This is a long post, and I don't know if anyone will actually read it. I just don't want people to keep saying "Oh! why did they make weapons break! They should have not made weapons break." No, they shouldn't have. Maybe they should have made a different game altogether, but not having weapons break would make BOTW a lot dumber than it is. Some people may like having RPG elements to give character to an open world, but I personally hate RPGs, and I think the weapon breaking system BOTW uses, while annoying, is much more satisfying.

There is one weapon that won't break. It just recharges in like 5 minutes and can take a pretty big beating before needing the recharge. Combinding it with the spark skill you earn, it's a gay ol' time!

I really don't like degradable equipment, it discourages fighting enemies by making resource management your most important priority.

Not necessarily. If the game's difficulty is revolved around making sure you are stacked with equipment, then yes. However, if fighting enemies themselves was challenging then it wouldn't matter if equipment broke. I love BOTW but I really don't like this design. The challenge should be fighting enemies, not making sure you have proper equipment.

I have no problem with breakable. But there should be blacksmiths to maintain them (and you could be offered a chance to learn that skill) and then it should require materials, some of them very rare to maintain the best weapons. Even if they had made the weapons about twice as durable, it would be less irritating. Also I wish I could buy weapons.

Anyway it's the best zelda ever imo. They did a bang up job on creating an easy to play open world, the greatest innovation was rock climbing. Always pisses me off in games where it looks like you should be able to climb over someting but the game doesn't allow it. Rock climbing makes it a truly free to explore world, and the stamina is a good mechanic too. But, hang gliding shouldn't require much stamina at all, some, but you're not lifting your body just suspending, and you can do that in real life for many many minutes perhaps more depending on strength. Pull ups are another matter :P

The challenge is about how you approach the enemy, I think many people who complain about the durability system thinks Botw as a hack'n slash game and expect to defeat enemies by just mashing the Y button, you can either go straight to them and use every weapon on your disposal or use the things around you to give you the advantage (trees, bomb barrels, bee hives, metal blocks, boulders, etc), or either sneak on them and using the stealth strike, or stealing enemy weapons, that's the magic of this game.

And even then, I (personally) just go straight to battle mobs because I really WANT to break my equipment since I always have my inventory full.

Breakable weapons have two other purposes in the design of the game. One is to force you into other weapon classes. Many people will only want to use, say a short sword the whole game, and if they had the option to they would, but the breakable weapons forces them to use the other weapons, giving a bit of interesting diversity to the combat. Especially when you're fighting a monster with tons of HP, and your weapon breaks. You switch to a different weapon class, and for some encounters, that can completely change how you fight.

The other use is making the player look for alternate means of fighting. Whether this means dropping boulders, using magnesis, or simply spamming bombs, you get forced into exploring the other mechanics of the game, keeping it from getting stale.

Id care less about the weapons if the bombs did more damage ive upgraded mines and they still dont do much damage especially against guardians who eat through weapons and shields like a kid through candy on halloween. Wouldve really like a durability meter on the equipment.

Was exploring ran into a shrine thinking it was a puzzle one and it was a major test of strength. It destroyed everything i had and spent an hour bombing it to death cause they only do like 5 damage on them.

I don't mind the game's breakable weapons, but they need about twice their current durability. Feels like everything I pick up is just as reliable as a basic tree branch, just with different attack levels.

BOTW is an amazing game no doubt about it i give it a solid 9.5/10, that doesn't mean it's my favorite out of the bunch..(Links Awakening DX and OOT take that honor) but it means it's a outstanding adventure game that has me fighting to put my controller down and not explore what's just around that mountainside. I applaud Nintendo for going back to Links roots and making exploring fun again, I've put in over 40 hrs so far and still only managed to find about 28 shrines out of the 100 to be found, haven't even attempted the dungeons yet. The shrines short as they may be are like Pringles .. can't just have 1 without wanting a few more for those precious spirit orbs.

The game changes the way you would normally play a Zelda game and makes you think how best to solve any one obstacle be it a group of bokoblins,Moblins,Lizalfos,Hinox etc or solving a puzzle in shrines. I wasn't the biggest fan when I heard they were introducing breakable weapons even tho I usually had plenty of weapons to use, I still preferred the old school find a sword and make your way to the master sword way of gameplay. I dunno if they introduce a way to temper weapons to make them more durable later in the game but I like others also would have liked an option to buy weapons from merchants and not just bugs or arrows lol.

Those are very minor gripes tho and I can't complain about a game I'm glued too til mass effect drops anyways :P

Hem... Skyrim quickly swaped on a Leved List system, meaning that you could not encounter some monsters as long that you was low level and current monsters had power according to your level (it was caped at some point, so HL you could one shot normal monsters (wolf & shit)).

Weapon durability is a good thing, it add a preparation system, so you don't just go in, head first, knowing that your armor will not fail you.
But if durability is too weak, making every weapons a piece of paper, it is just a way to add "hours of gameplay". Like when a game has hard grinding and RNG on top of that. It's fake content.

i've been playing it since i got it day one about 6 hours every night...and i still haven't revealed the entire map!

Ive been hooked trying to unlock all the map pieces i can recently, maybe got like 5 or 6 more left to do for the whole map. Gonna try that shield trick on the guardians to maybe deflect their laser blast back at them for the central hyrule tower in middle. Need to make a heat resistant elixer for the volcano area 1 as well.

Reason being I wanna know the place names of everything on the map so when I talk to people i can scope it out and mark it on map: )

you have to get up close to them for it to work though and you need cat like reflexes soon as you see that flash you have to slam A witnin a microsecond

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

The first thing I almost did was to go to all the towers. I hated not to have the whole map.
yeah but makes it harder to keep track where you have explored. i just unlock 1 sector at a time explore the shit out of it than move on to the next.

I really wish there was a way to buy weapons. When you get repairable weapons that's okaaaaay... but when I found that shield salesmen I thought hey! If you're going to let this guy sell equipment let someone else sell swords. :(
