Nintendo Switch Sales Across Europe Are Largest In Nintendo Hardware History

Nintendo have just confrmed that the launch of the Switch and sales of Zelda are the largest in Nintendo's history, for both hardware and software.

Here is Nintendo:

We can confirm that, across Europe, Nintendo Switch sold more in its launch weekend than any other Nintendo hardware in history.

Launch title The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has not only been bestowed with some of the highest review scores in gaming history, it's also the biggest-selling Nintendo launch title ever in Europe, even outselling Wii Sports in first weekend sales.

And all this in March – traditionally a quiet time for the games industry.

Nintendo didn't release any specific numbers with this press release.

Can't wait for the news outlets to spin this into a "but it won't last" headlines, because doom and gloom sells.

Nah, but this is brilliant. Especially in march. I wonder how the rest of the world did. I imagine it'll sell gangbusters up until the holiday season. It'll be interesting to see how it fairs against microsoft's scorpio (which probably using AMD's ryzen architecture).

what third party support? wait... what first party support?

there's only Zelda and i already own a Wii U....
Only Zelda? Maybe as a launch-title, but there are plenty of upcoming games, too (Mario Kart, Splatoon, Mario Galaxy knockoff /s) etc

Also note that the Wii U didn't receive near this much popularity as that of the Switch.

I think it is agreed that the Wii U was kind of a failure, right? And because of this some top-notch Wii U games remain largely unnoticed. I do think because of that, there will be Switch ports of key Wii U titles, such as Bayonetta 1/2, Wonderful 101 and Xenoblade X. If the Switch can hold its momentum.

The Wii U did badly enough that to most people buying the switch they're not even ports because they never got to play the original

Man, I would totally buy a Bayonetta 2 port!
The WiiU is the first and only Nintendo console/handheld that I haven't bought, so I missed the key titles from it.

Wow! I think they have a big one on their hands. If they can keep this momentum going throughout the rest of the year, I feel they'll hit a really high note come this holiday. I'd assume Switches would drop to $200-250 during holiday sales, and I bet they'll be flying off shelves as, just like the Wii and DS, word of mouth goes around as people show off the capabilities of Nintendo's new hardware to their friends and guests. I'm wishing them all the luck and I hope the Switch goes on to sell big-time!

What Nintendo need to do with the switch (for me to buy one anyway) is REALLY push the VC part of it. We know the X1 chipset is good enough for Gamecube and Wii titles, Nintendo knowing the systems inside out could top unoffical emulation. Give us SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii games etc that we can take on the go and the system is a winner, with or without 3rd party support for the actual Switch part.

They really should've populated the system with more VC games at launch. The launch lineup of new and existing ports is rather lackluster, with Zelda being its only saving grace. They really could've done with some solid Virtual Console ports for launch and drawn from their large and endearing library. And I think all of us want to see GameCube VC! They're going for that whole "drip-feed" model where they have a new title come out every month to keep a steady stream of new software going as the system picks up Steam. Well, VC titles would be a perfect way to populate that library throughout the year.
