PS3 has more scenes (at least the few I played, which is up to the start of the second world), which is not an issue if it has the same DS version scenes.
They are similar stories set in the same world, but the White Witch story arc is a lot more developed in the PS3 game, and as others have mentioned not all of the animations present in the DS are there in the PS3 version and vice versa (or, they are there but have been re-recorded to contain characters that weren't in the DS version).
So, before we even get to the part where we discuss all the technical challenges involved with grabbing the audio, there is the fact that we wouldn't be able to have *every* cutscene in English because of all the differences between the games. I don't think it makes sense to even start down that path if we can't have them all, since people would sometimes have JP voice actor and sometimes ENG voice actor for the same character. Not to mention the fact that there are countless voiced scenes that are not animated, but are done with in-game graphics and pauses for user input and stuff like that. Even if we could somehow (by making a wish on a magic lamp) finagle all the audio files we needed, hacking them to fit the game ROM and load correctly would be an immense challenge just because of the A/V encoding used in the game. We sometimes have issues with image files that use too many colors causing the entire game to crash and burn, so I can only imagine the horrors we would encounter while trying to perfect the audio files.
Long story short - it's a feature!
Think of all those games that are now advertising the option to use Japanese audio but English menus. It's become the cool thing to do, and considered a selling feature by many. Well, we're going to be cool by default and only give the option of being cool, aka having JP audio. (
) Am I selling this well yet?
I am grateful for people's enthusiasm to see this game completely localized from front to back, but I also know the limits of what is possible and reasonable and the audio is completely and fully outside the realm of possibility for so many reasons.
Otherwise, where are we at?
I'm down to the last 300 blocks of item and imagen description text, but they are still going to take a while for me to translate. (But there are "only" 300 blocks of flowery description text full of adjectives that I don't know left to translate. Yaaaaay! (O_O) ). Then we have to fix all the bugs and string wrapping issues that we have logged, as well as edit the first half of the game for terminology consistency since so much was up in the air until we hit 50% done. That's just to get the patch out for v1 without a Magic Master translation, just referencing the PS3 PDF. Also, that doesn't include about ~1000 blocks of text that resemble tweets and that aren't part of our game goals - I think it is the Wizard's Weekly fake newspaper thing, but I honestly haven't looked at it much because we're not committed to translating it (we didn't even find that text until late last fall, and I'm pretty sure the Spanish translation team did not translate it).
We're still making progress, but I'm not going to bother with % stats because it will be depressing for me to put into numbers just how long it is taking me to translate these descriptions. I think the biggest thing I'm going to take away from translating this game is how much I need to get studying again - my kanji and vocabulary needs some work to get it up to where I'd like to be (ie fluently reading actual books for educated adults, not just manga from Jump and CoroCoro).
As always, thanks for the support and for sending us positive vibes!
