OMG I SCREAMED WHEN I CHECKED THIS PAGE RIGHT NOW!!!

5%????!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!? OMG I AM SO EXCITED :D :D :D

So are we! The last 5% is the crappy annoying stuff that we left until the end. The ~700 Imagen and ~500 Item descriptions, of which we're done a little less than half of.

At least with the Item descriptions it is obvious how the file that contains the Item names maps to the other file that holds the descriptions. Nobody on our team (and several people have looked) can seem to figure out how the Imagen name file relates to the Imagen description file. So, I'm having to read the description in Japanese of the Imagen, guess at what it probably is, open my JP Magic Master, see if my guess was right, and if not pore through the Magic Master to see if I can find a similar description in the book somewhere. Going from the book description to the game description is not much better, since it is hard to know what keyword to use to narrow down your search, and a lot of the descriptions are slightly different between the book and the game text, even though it is all in Japanese. Blergh.

Anyway, I don't think the last 5% is going to take months of extra time, but it is going a lot more slowly than I had hoped, especially compared to the usual story dialogues that I've been working on.

Still, less than 5% means this shit is happening eventually, with eventually being definitely sometime this freaking year which is incredible. I am super proud of all the work the team has been doing, and their dedication to double-check hundreds of names across tens of thousands of files to make sure things are consistent. We're still finding things, and I'm sure the first patch will still have some wily typos and such that we missed, but... soon. Sooner than I would have bet even last September. :D

Thanks for the encouragement!

Someone from Reddit set up a Discord Server to talk about Ni No Kuni (all of the games, not just this one). It is a public server, as opposed to the translation team's private Slack for discussing translation work and graphics and rom changes. So far there are only around 10 people that have joined, but it has only been live for ~10 days or so from the looks of it.

Hello! I translate Ni no Kuni into Russian.

Help how to transfer files from a folder \data\data\map\script - hm001t.bin
If you change the game does not work.

Hello,

I moved your thread to the main Ni no kuni thread, this one being dedicated to English.
If you want, I can add a % to the first post, like the other projects.
I made a quote here so other people can see your message in both threads, but please answer him in the other one. thank you.

Can the voices from ps3 version be ported on NDS?So it would have the voices in English also?
I can help with compressing and editing the sound if someone can extract them from the ps3 version.

Or this has the voices also?

1. This isn't the same game, so probably not.
2. I am guessing this probably doesn't have voice acting, nor should it. Its a japanese exclusive.

It has voice acting, and that's one reason to keep japanese names in this translation, hearing the same name than the one you hear is more immersive. (for lack of better word)
Anjiera will explain it better !

But like you said, it's not the same story so we can't use PS3 audio.
also, that would be illegal to share a patch which contains audio from another game, users would have to extract their own PS3 game files and run batches, convertors, check file size to keep the ROM playable on real hardware, etc.

oh, okay. I understand.
I had the impression that the ps3 version was the same game on a higher resolution with same story events but with an altered gameplay.

PS3 has more scenes (at least the few I played, which is up to the start of the second world), which is not an issue if it has the same DS version scenes.
But some chapters are completely different.

PS3 has more scenes (at least the few I played, which is up to the start of the second world), which is not an issue if it has the same DS version scenes.

They are similar stories set in the same world, but the White Witch story arc is a lot more developed in the PS3 game, and as others have mentioned not all of the animations present in the DS are there in the PS3 version and vice versa (or, they are there but have been re-recorded to contain characters that weren't in the DS version).

So, before we even get to the part where we discuss all the technical challenges involved with grabbing the audio, there is the fact that we wouldn't be able to have *every* cutscene in English because of all the differences between the games. I don't think it makes sense to even start down that path if we can't have them all, since people would sometimes have JP voice actor and sometimes ENG voice actor for the same character. Not to mention the fact that there are countless voiced scenes that are not animated, but are done with in-game graphics and pauses for user input and stuff like that. Even if we could somehow (by making a wish on a magic lamp) finagle all the audio files we needed, hacking them to fit the game ROM and load correctly would be an immense challenge just because of the A/V encoding used in the game. We sometimes have issues with image files that use too many colors causing the entire game to crash and burn, so I can only imagine the horrors we would encounter while trying to perfect the audio files.

Long story short - it's a feature! :P

Think of all those games that are now advertising the option to use Japanese audio but English menus. It's become the cool thing to do, and considered a selling feature by many. Well, we're going to be cool by default and only give the option of being cool, aka having JP audio. (^_^) Am I selling this well yet?

I am grateful for people's enthusiasm to see this game completely localized from front to back, but I also know the limits of what is possible and reasonable and the audio is completely and fully outside the realm of possibility for so many reasons.

Otherwise, where are we at?
I'm down to the last 300 blocks of item and imagen description text, but they are still going to take a while for me to translate. (But there are "only" 300 blocks of flowery description text full of adjectives that I don't know left to translate. Yaaaaay! (O_O) ). Then we have to fix all the bugs and string wrapping issues that we have logged, as well as edit the first half of the game for terminology consistency since so much was up in the air until we hit 50% done. That's just to get the patch out for v1 without a Magic Master translation, just referencing the PS3 PDF. Also, that doesn't include about ~1000 blocks of text that resemble tweets and that aren't part of our game goals - I think it is the Wizard's Weekly fake newspaper thing, but I honestly haven't looked at it much because we're not committed to translating it (we didn't even find that text until late last fall, and I'm pretty sure the Spanish translation team did not translate it).

We're still making progress, but I'm not going to bother with % stats because it will be depressing for me to put into numbers just how long it is taking me to translate these descriptions. I think the biggest thing I'm going to take away from translating this game is how much I need to get studying again - my kanji and vocabulary needs some work to get it up to where I'd like to be (ie fluently reading actual books for educated adults, not just manga from Jump and CoroCoro).

As always, thanks for the support and for sending us positive vibes! :)

Graphics inside the rom. Sorry for my English.
Hi there! Are you trying to make your own translation? Or, do you want to know when the patch will be released?

For translation tools, you're likely better served asking on the more general Ni No Kuni translation thread:
https://gbatemp.net/threads/ninokuni-shikkoku-no-madoushi-translation-project.310214/
There are many people working on the game in many languages, and there is a better chance of getting help with general rom hacking things on that thread.

If you're curious when the patch (with the translated graphics) will be released, it is looking very probable that we will have the first version of the patch ready by the summer of this year, or possibly earlier. This first version will not include the Magic Master book that comes with the game, and therefore some of the riddles in the game will simply tell you the answer that you need to type.

I hope that helps!
