Gaming Is trading a 3.60 Vita for a Wii u worth it?

Is trading a Vita(3.60fw) for a Wii u(5.5.1fw) worth it?

It's pretty even-steven, but a wii-u can play (purchased) games online, and you can easily get on the e-shop etc at this point, for a while you could get on PSN with henkaku but that was disabled (also it's unknown if that's risking a system-wide ban, unknown at this time.) But all that could change

I'm not really sure why this is debatable.

- Both consoles are dying (though Wii u still has some signs of life with big hits coming soon).

- Both consoles have limited exploits (vita hack is new and we are still learning and improving as the days go by, while Wii u exploit is limited cause we don't have IOSU, which is the equivalent to IOS for the Wii since you have one, you surely know about it)

- Both consoles are supposedly waiting for greater things in terms of hacking (IOSU for the Wii U, better backup compatibility for vita)

So assuming you like games on both consoles equally (or else why are we having this conversation if you are leaning towards one console vs the other?), it all comes down to price. Like people said, Wii u is almost double in price. So:
- You can get it and then easily save up for a vita, while it would be hard doing so if you are doing the opposite
- if the above is an issue, like people again said, buy a PS Vita TV.. It's dirt cheap.

Even if your decision is that you want the vita anyway, once again, like people said, why not do the obvious? Do the trade, sell the Wii U, buy a brand new vita (3.61 was just released and you only need the version before that one for the hacks, so I don't think any newly bought device will be on 3.61), buy a decent memory for the vita, and still probably end with leftover cash

In all cases, I don't see why a trade is NOT worth it

I traded a nes toploader and $50 for a blue 3.60. 2001 with a 32gb card

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Before you made your choice did you relize you could have replaced your wii with the wii u. Because. The wii u can do every thing the wii can do including gamecube backups and all wii homebrew etc

The wii u retails for more, but they go for fairly cheap on craigslist. If we're talking about the used market, then it's pretty even.

I use my vita way more than my wii u, but I think I'm in the minority.

Also, the wii u can play everything Nintendo, except 3ds, and that's pretty awesome.

Yes; I did realize that I could replace my Wii with a Wii u because it can do everything that the Wii does however that was not appealing to me in the slightest because I wanted the Wii u mostly for homebrew and not for the backwards compatibility since that means nothing to me. On top of that; as another user pointed out, the Wii u isn't fully hacked yet and only loads games via SD card which in of itself means slow loading and compatibility issues.

With the release of vitamin 2.0 I feel like I made the right decision by sticking with my vita(which I am now using more than I ever have)as its homebrew scene is currently thriving which is more than I can say for the Wii u. Who knows how long it will be until the Wii U is fully opened up for USB loading like the Wii is. When the Wii u gets to that point I will pick one up but until then the Vita is where is at right now for me. Also it turns out that the guy that wanted to trade with me was not including any cables/adapters for it(not even power adapter) with his Wii u which was kind of a deal breaker for me regardless of the fact that the cables are cheap and I could have picked one up from anywhere.

Edit: As far as doing the trade and just selling the Wii u goes(which is what alot of people suggested I do and rightfully so). I understand that from a price standpoint the trade was definitely worth it but I honestly just didn't have the need/motivation to do that because im not hurting for cash at this time.

That's your choice then but if it was my choice i would go for the Wii u and buy a vita secondhand around 50 euro's wich i did and there are enough floating around that price point.
I agree with this, I could get 10+ vitas in my areas for $50 right now, some with cards >32GB, cheapest Wii U is $150. Math is hard.

I bought 3 vitas from my local pawn shop for 75 bucks each. All came with at least 4gb memory card, cables and a game each. I'd make the trade ASAP. Go buy a new vita from a pawn shop or online listing afterward. Henkaku is easy to install.

Seriously just keep your vita, there will be a lot of things you will be able to do with it now that Theflow is continuing his work, and has announced an inwork psp emulator for HenKaku. We don't know if it'll amount to anything but it probably will and it will probably be extremely popular. Plus, there are new games that may catch your fancy. I'd probably wait till Henkaku develops a masking and update spoofer tool before playing anything new though. I also have the Wii, and despite it not having a lot of 3rd party games, it has great first party games (at least to me it does). I would still keep the vita because that can be taken anywhere. Alternatively you could just buy a 3ds and have what you want on there; you'll have access to more games and more support.

I did end u keeping my vita for these EXACT reasons you listed. The homebrew scene for the vita has been on fire with no signs of slowing down and I just couldn't trade a device like that for one(the Wiiu) that its homebrew scene is at a standstill for especially considering I already have a Wii so I definitely feel like I made the right decision even if from a price standpoint the trade would have been worth it;.

any regrets now that iosu and usb backup loading has been released for the wii u?

Not Really no. I still use my vita daily and have nice backlog of games to play on it + coupled with Adrenaline and the upcoming updates to the PSP side of the vita by the flow gives me much to look forward to. Additionally I also have a PS4 Pro as my main console and betwwen Battlefield 1, Skyrim SE and FFXV it keeps me busy. I am happy the Wii u scene finally IOSu and USB backup loading. Was considering picking up a second hand Wii u since the announcement of the Switch means they will become cheaper now.

well, all wii u's r hackable; not all ps vitas. though, I've personally had more fun with the wii u than even the ps3. my ps3 was for research and testing though.

they're both great consoles in their own way, but what matters in the end is that you're happy with the choice you made

Anybody who is considering buying a wii-u, make sure you check out a list of games available. I bought one blindly on 5.3.2 to try out piracy and quickly discovered there is literally no games that interested me, and my tastes in gaming are extremely diverse and spans a number of genres, and even I was struggling finding a title that interested me. Keep the Vita IMHO

@Maximumbeans, Indeed. I've been working on getting this Infecutus chip to work on my PS2. But after soldering, I realised that a plastic piece was missing from the power ribbon cable to the power and eject buttons.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
Now I could go with soldering the contacts from the cable to the connector on the mobo, but doesn't sound like a good permanent solution.

Man, that's beyond my brain  I'm no good with hardware for now. I'd like to get into hardmods in future though

@Maximumbeans, Maybe start practice soldering. Get a cheap-ass soldering iron and follow some good YouTube tutorials.

Least my experience has gotten better than over a decade ago. My iron would constantly bump into components and break them.

Sounds good. I actually did soldering but like 16 years ago for school so uuuuh probably rusty haha

@Maximumbeans, Same here. I did soldering at school from a teacher who I honestly liked since he had plenty of good electronics experience.
