You can transfer but you need to use a CFW (you can use CakeFW enabling the use of the EmuNand, survive Reboot with some titles and without Signatures Patches enabled if you want to only use games in a normal way) with a Redirecton Nand (EmuNand or RedNand), you update the Redirection Nand (EmuNand or RedNand) and transfer from here, saying so one part get to the System Nand in Reboot you can bypass this by deleting the Internet Connection in tthe System Nand then you will be able to get to this part of the transfer booting directly in the Redirection Nand.
you don't need emunand buddy.

Well he said that he wanted to do thatt in 9.2.0-X so it"s the only way to do staying in 9.2.0-X. For System Transfer in System Nand it"s needed to do some trickeries (thta maybe are"t the best as something can go bad in the trasnfer because that) or using Arm9LoaderHax.

@Bohamad93 It should be "safe" since Nintendo only ban people that use gamecards with public headers (Sky3DS, Gateway 3DS), but digital games use the unique console header.
They may be able to do something to people who pirate digital games but they don"t seem to want to ever punish people, so you will be safe I think.

Still a noob here -- I used gateway before switching to Luma.

Is it possible to get Luma to read .cia files on the gateway microsd card that's in the gateway larger card?

Once you have luma, I suggest switching away from gateway, move your larger SD in to your 3ds and dump your carts that you are using your gateway card for to cias and yeah be done with gateway, I just got back in to the scene and switched from gateway, to luma + gateway, then to luma + rednand, haven't looked back, it's nice not having to carry any carts with me anywhere with my 3ds.

I have a question, or 2. Or 10.

I just installed a9lh and Luma CFW, so I feel my Gateway Card is now redundant.
I want to start installing CIA versions of games, since they're more 'reliable'. If that's the word. Save files aren't as much of an issue, online play is less risky and such.

My question is. How do I install these CIA files? I mean, obviously you need a .CIA version of the game you wish to play and a CIA manager like FBI. But where does the game get 'installed' to? The ticket, the TMD, the content...? Does it all just get stored on the 3DS SD Card?

Say I have 'PokemonSun.cia' and have it in a folder on the SD Card called 'cias' ready to install using FBI.

The ticket and TMD get installed to the Nintendo 3DS folder on the SD Card (I assume?) But what about the content itself? Is that copied into the place that a game downloaded from the eShop would be put? Or does the CIA just exist in that 'cias' folder and the game is loaded from there...?

Maybe I need a guide to installing CIAs thread hahaha It can't be as hard to understand as I'm making it out in my head.

Game content is installed to "Nintendo 3DS" folder. The cia file ("cias" folder) is used only for installation, you can safely delete it after install.

Ah thanks!

So, I have a 16GB Micro SD Card. If I want to install a 4GB game, I need at least 8GB spare space? 4 for the CIA and 4 for the install, then delete the CIA file to gain the other 4GB back? :)

Exactly. Or you can use freeShop or CIAngel for direct download (only 4GB will be used).^_^

I guess these are apps for the Homebrew Loader? Literally only just picked my 3DS up for the first time in over a year and did a9lh and Luma installs. The only Homebrew experience I've had with 3DS was when it was new, Ninjhax!

I was very into the Wii Scene though years and years ago hence the high post count. Hoping to learn a lot about 3DS hacking/ homebrew to help out here too!

They aren't apps for Homebrew launcher. They are apps for home menu (like games), you can install them via FBI.

Yeahh I discovered they're .cia files so I just installed freeShop thanks :)

It's not actually too bad to understand. All the files are still stored on the SD Card, they just need to be installed and deleted first. Quite clever! Will be keeping the original files in case they ever need uninstalling rather than just deleting them from the SD Card.

hello cearp and everyone, I am a noob and just got my N3DS XL a month ago.
After read this thread, may I make a noob conclusion? If I make any mistake please correct me.
So I think most people here who had questions about if a .CIA is legit or not-legit is for play online safe, right? (or maybe relatively safe.)
Also some guys are currently play with sky3ds or gateway

And here it is:

most dangerous(when online play) -- .3ds .3dz (with public header) > .3ds .3dz (with private header) > illegit .cia > legit .cia (out-of-region) > legit .cia (match your console region) ---- most safe

is this correct ?

What is a legit CIA? I thinks cearp already said it clearly
A 'legit' CIA means that the signatures are valid.
A legit cia will work in sysnand, without needing hacks to load it (like gw, cfw etc) -- although we need hacks to INSTALL the cia. :)

where are legit cia from?
-->ripped from a console that had them preinstalled (such as ORAS, MH4U etc)
my noob question one: is this the only way where a legit CIA come from?

what is the advantage using legit CIA?
  • it can be work in sysnand
  • it is most safe when play online

my noob question two:
about illegit cia, this is my thought:

  • convert a scene release .3ds to cia
  • convert a patched, modified .3ds to cia (language patch, cheat patch)
  • download from freeshop
  • any patched, modified cia (i think this is same thing as "convert a patched .3ds to cia")
  • maybe more... welcome to add here

So as far as I know, these are all illegt cia, right?
And play these cia online, the risk is higher than play legit cia(match the console region)?

Because I am not a native English speaker, but I bought a US N3DS XL
(Taiwanese N3DS only has very few official released games, but some of them are with Chinese language. My English is not good enough, and it is more fun if I can understand the story in games.)

If anyone can answer me or correct me, it would be very helpful.

You can use Decrypt9 to create a legit CIA from any title you've downloaded using the official eShop. However, this CIA will only be 'legit' on the system it was ripped from, since the ticket has the console ID. (The exception is 3DS bundles with preinstalled games, since for some reason Nintendo put an "all systems" ticket on these titles.)

Any sort of conversions to the CIA break the signature, making them not legitimate. This includes converting a cartridge dump to CIA, applying a patch, etc.

Total noob here.
Note: I had a CFW installed on my US n3ds xl by someone (original firmware was 11.0.0-33u). He hardmod it and installed arm9 (This is all i know).

Question:
1) Can I just download CIA games anywhere or are there malicious CIAs that have virus/etc which will destroy my 3ds requiring me to download CIA from trusted sites only.
2) If I can download a game's CIA and Legit CIA, then Legit CIA will always be better to install right? (just making sure)
3) Where is the best place to download CIA? I tried looking at some sites but they always have limitations and/or download is slow unless if I pay for subscription.

Thanks.
