Android vs iOS security

im doing some research on this matter. im mean i know a bit on this matter (ive done a 50 page research so far). but i want to know the thoughts of GBAtemp.

whats your thoughts on this?
which one is more secure in your opinion and why?
any more informtion which you would like to share with me i.e. webpage or book?

very small thoughts on this.

iOS is the more secure one the in general but because the way of android ecosystem works. also android allows anything thing to be installed from any source unlike iOS.

the reason for this thread is because i'm biased towards android. but i don't want me be biased towards something blind me on the matter.

Well, without jailbreak iOS is really secure. iOS can't install a app unless it is securely signed by a apple account so if the app was a virus, it would have to go through apple if it was on the app store. I don't know much about android security so I can't really talk on that matter. But from experience I would say iOS is more secure (and sometimes that's what hurts iOS devices)

IOS definitely wins hands down if were talking about security.
Like cmon, in all seriousness, Androids are essentially "open" for us to do what ever the hell we want, thanks to ADB and other great tools (:

Google Lock vs iCloud Lock:

• Google Lock on Samsung Devices can be bypasses with an USB-OTG Drive
• Google Lock on LG Devices can be bypassed on the SETUP MENU?!?! (Patched in the newest update I think tho)
• Google Lock on Motorola Phones can also be bypassed in the setup menu with ADB
• etc., etc.
• iCloud? No way to unlock it without working for Apple (I believe) (I know there is a way to temporarily "unlock" an iDevice and use it like your normally would using a DNS trick on old IOS software, but it's still not really "bypassing" and giving the user full use like you would get from bypassing on an Android device.

Disregarding just the difference between the device locking mechanisms, there alot of other things to factor in, but I'd say those are one of the many major ones.

After that whole thing with the FBI having to pay hackers to bust into an Iphone, I'd be more inclined to think Ios is very secure at least with local data (even though the FBI now has means to bust that shit open.)

Without Jailbreak you can install unsigned application with Cydia Impactor by signing them yourself for 1-2 weeks.

I know (I even use it for Spotify++ and other + apps) but i'm talking about native security. You wouldn't install a random .ipa through impactor but if it was a app you wanted, say the discord app. But it was a app that steals your apple information. But you just don';t get that in the app store.

Well, if we compare stock Android (which most refer to as AOSP) to unjailbroken iOS, iOS wins hand down.

If you do want a smartphone with good security but can't afford an iPhone, get an Android made by BlackBerry. Even after all these months, there isn't even an avaikable method known by the public to root your device. BlackBerry is very serious about its security and it always patches up security holes one way or another.

thats the thing i dont understand with all the computer power and NSA knowledge how did they not know a way to enter iPhone 5c?

not sure if this has value to the secutity talk but i had thought about something...

when you buy a apple device you are actually buying apple services and a "physical shell" (or interface)
i mean.. from the moment you get your brand new iphone you create an apple account, that account lets you unlock and use that device..
everything is backuped to the cloud. so if you destroy your device you can pay a new device and the moment you put the account, it's like nothing happened...
loose the device, you can remotely shut it down, making that phone electrical waste...

as for android.. any android phone can be erased and be used again, you can mess almost everything with the OS...
and i found that google drive is not that reliable... specially google photos.. i need to enable the backup (which people never enables, or don't know what a google account is, then cry about lost pictures)
but google photos\drive recently got a new update, i was pretty rested that it was still backuping my stuff guess what.. for whatever reason i had oppened google photos and a permissions prompt appeared and lots of recent pictures where not backuped...

I think the NSA could get in with time just fine, the FBI not so much. Also the matter of time is pretty key. The NSA (from what we know) gathers tons of data, but that doesn't necessarily mean they can decrypt it right now. I'm sure the NSA has a collect of zero-days for the iPhone that the could have easily used to hop right in though.

On the overall topic, I don't think either of them is especially secure, but it depends on the perspective you are coming from. The local access security, App Store security, nearby access security (wifi, bluetooth), etc. They each have their security strengths and weaknesses in different areas. iPhone has a more secure App Store due to the heavy restrictions from Apple, compared to the play store. From an overall OS perspective, I would bet that iPhone is also more secure due to the fact that security updates are pushed directly (like a Nexus phone from Google). Any non Pixel/Nexus devices gets delayed security updates from the Carriers+Manufactures, making them inherently less secure due to the delay between patch complete and implementation on device. The services surrounding them, as mentioned above, also have different security levels and cooperation with outside actors (privacy more than security on this point, but w/e).

And on and on... Depends on what angle you are looking at it from.
