Press Release
Detachable Controllers Reinvent Gaming

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- In an introductory video released today, Nintendo provided the first glimpse of its new home gaming system and revealed that it is called Nintendo Switch. In addition to providing single and multiplayer thrills at home, the Nintendo Switch system also enables gamers to play the same title wherever, whenever and with whomever they choose. The mobility of a handheld is now added to the power of a home gaming system to enable unprecedented new video game play styles.

At home, Nintendo Switch rests in the Nintendo Switch Dock that connects the system to the TV and lets you play with family and friends in the comfort of your living room. By simply lifting Nintendo Switch from the dock, the system will instantly transition to portable mode, and the same great gaming experience that was being enjoyed at home now travels with you. The portability of Nintendo Switch is enhanced by its bright high-definition display. It brings the full home gaming system experience with you to the park, on an airplane, in a car, or to a friend’s apartment.

Gaming springs into action by removing detachable Joy-Con controllers from either side of Nintendo Switch. One player can use a Joy-Con controller in each hand; two players can each take one; or multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options. They can easily click back into place or be slipped into a Joy-Con Grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, if preferred, the gamer can select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller to use instead of the Joy-Con controllers. Furthermore, it is possible for numerous people to bring their Nintendo Switch systems together to enjoy local multiplayer face-to-face competition.

“Nintendo Switch allows gamers the freedom to play however they like,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO, Nintendo of America. “It gives game developers new abilities to bring their creative visions to life by opening up the concept of gaming without boundaries.”

Developers can design their games supporting a variety of play styles, which gives gamers the freedom to choose an experience that best suits them. Some of the publishers, developers and middleware partners announcing support for Nintendo Switch are as follows:

So your saying their plug and play? Ok. Try it and get back to me on that.
I didn't say they were the exact same form factor. I said they're the same components, as in the chips.

You seem to think that if a device has soldered-down components, it isn't a "computer". There's plenty of laptops (especially ultrabooks) with soldered CPUs and RAM. Does that make them any less of a computer than a desktop?

Congratulations, you've just proven that you don't have a clue.

I recently bought two ThinkPad X260s. They have soldered CPUs, but they're far from being a "web book". (did you mean "netbook"?)
  • Intel Skylake 6200U CPU (dual-core, quad-thread)
  • 16 GB RAM
  • 250 GB SSD
  • 1920x1080 IPS display
I find the soldered CPU to be an acceptable compromise for a system of this form factor, especially considering the battery is rated for 20hr+.

No my "definition" of a tablet is a device for entertainment use and portability. PCs "in general" are use for constructive purposes.
That rules out 99% of computers out there, because they are used to check Facebook and nothing constructive. Your definition seems to boil down to "a PC is what I say is a PC", but any definition that claims a device that natively runs a desktop version of MS Windows is not a PC is just plain silly.

Think about what these were at the time...

Mind you, there were others before but Apple is the one that really did the product right...
  • iPod: You're thinking about the iPod Touch... the first iPod was quite revolutionary...
  • iPhone: Touch screen phones really weren't a thing until the iPhone... see this... and this...
  • iPad: Really the first tablet that sold well...
  • iTunes: Okay... you got me on that one...
And about the headphone jack... seriously... it's not that big of a deal...

Android phones will ditch the headphone jack in favor of USB-C too... The Moto Z already has and that was realeased BEFORE the iPhone 7...

But this of course is off topic for the thread so I'll just stop here...
Touch screens on mobile devices are old as dirt. Granted they were almost exclusively resistive, but phones featuring a touch screen of sorts comprised a fair share of the selection since the 90s.

Why would they want to do that? There's no point doing so.

Giving a discount to people who pre-ordered the last generation console is not a very smart move on the company's part. They would lose profit.
Possibly, depends on manufacturing costs.
Any possible loss would be made up for by selling more game titles and other software. Profit and loss will depend on the number of people who refuse to buy console after the last fiasco.
I am one of those people.

People who pre-ordered the WiiU should be given a $100 discount in the new system or something.

The Early Adopters presumably:
* have the money
* have more excitement about the product than the rest of the population.

If I decided to discount to the tune of $100, I'd run the risk of:
* alienating current customers (who find out about the discount but can't get it). They might think the price they are paying is too high.
* losing a fair bit of profit. There have to be cheaper ways of rewarding loyalty, such as with trinkets and character figures and plushes (especially if they advertise a new game or product). This benefits the business (advertising + low cost of rewarding loyalty) and doesn't really alienate other customers as much as a huge price-cut would, I think. Plus it doesn't hurt the business as much as a price-cut would.

Of course a price-cut is nicer to get for price-conscious customers. But early adopters typically aren't price-sensitive & it makes far less business sense to treat them like they are.

Nintendo's challenges
Nintendo's ball-and-chain is of their own making. The Wii is one of their biggest successes and also one of their biggest problems. For many, the novelty died off quickly and the graphics got tiring quickly. Problem One. These perceptions and experiences with the Wii had a terrible effect on Wii U sales, in my opinion. Of course they weren't the only problem, but I bet it was a big part of it. That's Problem Two. The fact that they alienated lots of 'traditional' gamers that flocked to competing systems for more traditional gameplay and better graphics and sound is probably Problem 3. These problems build upon each other. Now, more than ever, Nintendo can't afford to get it wrong.

"Nintendo Switch is powered by the performance of the custom Tegra processor. The high-efficiency scalable processor includes an NVIDIA GPU based on the same architecture as the world’s top-performing GeForce gaming graphics cards." so this is basically based off the 1080, titan x and titan z cards?

Lord don't get that old argument started again. It doesn't matter what its based on. It's its own entity. Let it be.

It means it'll be based off of the NVidia 10 series for graphics power

I'm going to be supporting the switch as it seems very promising. The only thing that kinda worries me is that Nintendo might lose third party support again. I don't think its going to be the case here if the Tegra processors gpu is based off the Nvidia 10 series for graphics power. I am hoping it succeeds though.

Porting to it should be simple. Nvidia will probably give Nintendo updates to push on occasion, like driver updates. It'll support all the major engines.
