Fable Legends Cancelled and Proposed Closure of Lionhead Studios

The future of the Fable franchise began to look bleak and unpromising with the release of Fable 3, followed by some really crap Kinect titles.

Fable legends, a 4v1 multiplayer action game that was promised to be free to play and be relatively expansive, has now been cancelled by the developers.

After much consideration we have decided to cease development onFable Legends, and are in discussions with employees about the proposed closure of Lionhead Studios in the UK. Additionally, we will close Press Play Studios in Denmark, and sunset development onProject Knoxville.

These have been tough decisions and we have not made them lightly, nor are they a reflection on these development teams – we are incredibly fortunate to have the talent, creativity and commitment of the people at these studios. The Lionhead Studios team has delighted millions of fans with the Fable series over the past decade. Press Play imbued the industry with a unique creative spirit behind games likeMax: The Curse of Brotherhood and Kalimba, which both captured passionate fans. These changes are taking effect as Microsoft Studios continues to focus its investment and development on the games and franchises that fans find most exciting and want to play.

While it is not definitive that Lionhead will be closing, it is most likely that we will never see another Fable game from them again. Perhaps the IP may be passed on to some other studio but as of right now, things are only looking worse for people waiting for new IP on Xbox One.

I am always surprised at the love for Fable 1, not as much as I am for the Sonic Adventure games, Monster Hunter or Xenoblade mind you, as I could never get it to click for me. Normally slightly wonky Euro twist RPGs are right up my alley as well -- I was one of the strange ones that liked Venetica, First Templar, Hunted: The Demon's Forge and Alpha Protocol. I guess it was functional enough, unlike the three mentioned at the start, but I never felt any desire to play it/finish it and that is hard to do in such a game.

When I was little with my first xbox , I played the original Fable to the point where I had everything maxed out before the final jack fight. Consistent grinding on earth trolls. My biggest gripe was a non replayable arena mode. If they could take Fable TLC, make a DIRECT sequel with a more open worldy mechanic, I feel that could save their studios. Too bad they never decided to.

Molyneux is a pretentious artist, he's incapable of making sequels because his work can be considered art - it's form over substance. He has a great idea every 5-6 years and turns it into something magnificent - Populus, Black & White, Fable, the list goes on. Unfortunately, as it's the case with art, the mold works once - that's it. He tells his story and it's finished - what's left is the bare framework that may very well be good, but it'll always be lacking. It's just one of those creators and one of those studios - they can't gin up success, it comes to them like a muse, and that frame of mind doesn't work in business.

I enjoyed the 1st Fable alot, it was a solid game if not a bit short. The series as a whole is pretty lackluster though.

The list may go on but yours did not include Dungeon Keeper. That is bad form, even if you are not yet over the mobile game the other year.
That's true, I loved the game. On that point, I didn't mention Syndicate or Magic Carpet either, but the point stands. All those games are completely different, as if they came from altogether different baskets - it's very unusual for a team of devs to do. It's the Molyneux touch.

I am not sure which is worse, that there would be microtransaction nonsense in a beta, or that people would pay for microtransaction nonsense in a beta.

I agree, the game sucked, i only put in around 5 hours and couldn't stand it, their gold system at last was to unlock new places.

Anything purchased in the beta was to be carried over to the final release as the beta was unique in that it would be simply batched into the final version...Although stats, silver, gear and other items were still to be cleared once the game was finalized.

The only micro-transaction was for buying the heroes so they stayed unlocked for you permanently. Thus they wouldn't reset for you cause they wouldn't go away. Regardless if they went away and their stats reset in the next rotation, items and gear didn't disappear. But you'd have to re-level them. Thus buying them perma is a must if you wanted to keep a favorite character up to stuff. Their was to be many ways to get silver (free earned in game cash) quickly each day. Buying gold was purely optional and was for those who may not of waited to save up the silver.

I figured it would be something like what which means it is not as distasteful as full on pay to win but I still find it distasteful.
