Xbox "One-Two" Coming?

8C7mvgG.png

A number of weeks ago, rumors of an upgraded PS4 began cropping up all over the place offering significant performance boosts to the initial PS4 design along with 4K compatibility. Now, anonymous insiders are reporting that Microsoft is working on their own big console upgrade, dubbed "Scorpio" and "Xbox One-Two".

This supposed upgrade's target performance is nearly 4x that of the current Xbox One, with sources saying 6 TFLOPS compared to the current console's ~1.5 TFLOPS. The inside source also claims the upgraded Xbox, like the rumored PS4 Neo, will be backwards compatibility with current Xbox One games. The reports claim this upgrade isn't likely to show up until 2017, with a Slim model of the current console possibly being announced this E3.

How will these mid-generation console upgrades effect console gaming in general? Will these mid-generation upgrades prove a poor idea, effectively dividing owners of current consoles? Will developers bother supporting the older consoles when a newer, more powerful option is out there? Who's to say. Personally, I'm not necessarily against these upgrades as long as the respective companies offer big trade in bonuses for the old hardware, and as long as game developers continue supporting the old consoles as well.

So,
The xbox took a 360 to start back from one, and is working its way to count to two?

Eh...these upgrades are making me worry about what the true next gen consoles would be. Nx is confirmed next gen and new, but if the upgrades are just that, upgrades, then im not really so sure i find it significantly worth it for me for good reasons.

1. I dont own nor will ever afford a 4k tv.
2. My ps4 works just fine. Dont have an xbone yet tho.

It was one thing going from phat to slim, but this sounds like taking the route of the new 3ds. The features and specs are better, but aside from a few upgrade exclusives, will there really be a difference between the new and old?

When it comes down to it, whats important is the games. If i see a reasonable lineup of upgrade only games, then id consider it. Otherwise ill keep what i got til gen 9 gets here.

And Phil Spencer stated they weren't going to made another Xbox One ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Gee, thanks Microsoft.

I'm telling you, all 3 companies are shooting themselves in the foot. A newer PS4 and Xbox One? That's retarded. These aren't phones we're talking about. That's the thing people liked about consoles, you wouldn't have to worry about buying new hardware for 5-8 years. How many years has it been since the PS4/Xbox One released? 3?

Nintendo, I'm not letting you off easy either. They're releasing a new console mid-generation. That's suicide... is what I would say if Sony and Microsoft weren't pulling this shit. Tbh, if Nintendo can make a powerful console with great 3rd party support (please Nintendo..), I wouldn't be suprised if it sells. Consumers and even some devs don't like the approach Sony and Microsoft are taking these consoles.

Oh well, only time will tell. I don't plan on buying the PS4.5 or a Xbox One-Two, because I already have the original version and I'm happy with them. As for the NX, I'm most likely going to buy it.

Nintendo started it!

They completely shifted the generations. Now every generation will have a .5

Which is stupid, it removes part of the appeal consoles have.
Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft should all just suck it up for a few more years.
Release the PS5, Xbox ???, and the NX in like 3 more years. Let the consumers enjoy the console they purchased in the last two years.

I kinda see the point in releasing incremental upgrades for handheld consoles once and a whie but I don't understand is why living room consoles would take the same step. It's basicaaly them saying:
FUCK YOU! BUY THIS CONSOLE OR NO GAEMS

The PS Neo, if reports are to be believed, is mainly a thing because of VR: Vanilla PS4 just doesn't have the grunt for it. Now one of the main points in similar reports about this Xbox One-n-a-half is support for Oculus Rift... (always wondered why that came with a XO pad)
Sounds like either are a must for console players wanting the VR experience then.

The >6TFLOPS is pretty big news, as the Neo is more like >4TFLOPS, however the current release time is set for late 2017 - if Neo does indeed come out later this year, that's a whole years difference - giving Sony's flagship version of its (more popular) PS4 a years headstart is a very bad idea if you ask me.. a 50% extra power boast won't really be enough.

Some rumours are even stating they'll ditch the Xbox One brand name altogether and go for a new console, naturally giving BC...

The whole thing from both of them just looks confusing to me, so who knows how a casual gamer is gonna understand it when they're released!
Can understand NX of course, Wii U is completely flat on its face and they need a new console out there like yesterday, but this and PS Neo?!

I'm really considering getting a ps4 but if they do the upgrade only exclusive games when these upgraded consoles release then I'm gonna murder someone.

4K TVs are dirt cheap now, about as much as a 1080p of the same size just a few years ago. I can get a 50 inch 4K at my Walmart for $488, and take 10% off of that with my employee discount, and its pretty cheap.

I tend to wait until the mid-generation refresh to get the console. Usually the "slim" console is faster, more efficient, and more aesthetically pleasing. The refresh has been around since at least the NES, and only the gamecube, n64, wii u, and xbox didn't have slim/alt versions (including handhelds...though maybe gameboy colour didn't? I can't recall).

I'll be picking up the ps4.5 and xbox 1.5 when they hit. There will probably be a third version from microsoft and xbox before the next generation happens in 4 or 6 years.

Not quite, the Slim versions of consoles are more efficient, yes (as in, heat, etc), but faster? No. Slim models use the same hardware as the original version.

What Sony and Microsoft are doing here is completely different.
