V2.1: "b.bin" payload name was removed in AuReiNAND 4.1, fixed this guide to reference that

V2 of guide:
Seperates instructions for updating AuReiNAND itself and for switching from Cakes.

NOTICE:
This Guide is not a pure guide, it guides you through using only parts of an excellent guide and is intended for people who wish to switch to AuReiNAND or update to the latest AuReiNAND release ONLY and want to know which steps are needed and which are not to upgrade or switch.

WARNING: Check the links in the guide first before attempting to avoid issues if you delete any files without a backup and a link is down.

the files needed for all the steps are linked at the top of the guide listed below
The Steps listed are for this guide as of 3/30/2016 and will be updated when steps change

The guide used will be this exellent one @Plailect has made

https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki/Part-5-(arm9loaderhax-&-AuReiNAND)

---------------
For People Switching from Cakes to AuReiNAND
---------------

First, Follow these steps (under Preparatory Work)

Step 1
Step 7 (this will help you run Homebrew Launcher as a CIA, skip if you have done this already)
Step 8 (if you have files in the aurei folder, delete all files and folders except firmware90.bin (if you have this){This includes patched_ files also}
Step 9
Step 10
Step 11
Step 13
Step 14
Step 15
Step 16 (rename to "up.bin instead of "b.bin", "b.bin" naming was removed in 4.1)
Step 17
Step 18

-----------------
For People Updating AuReiNAND from an older build (updating payloads is listed below, but optional) I recommend doing so anyway.
-----------------

First, Follow these steps (under Preparatory Work)

Step 8 (if you have files here, delete all files/folders except firmware90.bin and payloads folder (if you have this)
Step 18
Step 19
Step 20

----------------
For People who want to update the payloads also (does not require updating AuReiNAND also) Assumes default.bin is Decrypt9, y.bin is EmuNAND9, and b.bin is Uncart
----------------

First, Follow these steps (under Preparatory Work)

(delete the payloads "default.bin","y.bin", and "x.bin" from the payloads folder)
Step 10
Step 11
Step 13
Step 14
Step 15
Step 16

-----------------------------------------

Next, follow all the steps from Configuring AuReiNAND (VERY IMPORTANT)
if you need to get back into this menu, hold select and press power button while console is off

That is it, you are done upgrading AuReiNAND to latest and have enabled FIRM protection so you can safely update SysNAND without bricking.

To run 3DSX homebrew, use DevMenu or FBI to install the Homebrew Launcher CIA from step 7 that you copied to your SD Card.

Here is a link to the homebrew menu starter package in case you do not have this
http://smealum.github.io/ninjhax2/starter.zip
This is needed to use the homebrew launcher CIA properly

--------------------------------------

What you can do with a9lh and AuReiNAND (copy and paste from guide)

Your device will now automatically launch into CFW SysNAND. You will no longer be able to boot without the SD card in, that is normal.
You will now boot a Custom Firmware based SysNAND by default.
You can now hold Start on boot to launch Decrypt9, a full featured NAND tool. (L+R still works also)
You can now hold Y on boot to launch EmuNAND9, a full featured EmuNAND and SD management tool.
You can now hold X on boot to launch Uncart, a tool for converting a physical game cart to an installable file.

thanks for this guide!
this can be helpful, but i have a suggestion:

maybe you can split it in two parts:
1. update aureinand
2. switch to aureinand from cakes

updating aureinand only requires to delete 2 files from your aurei folder and then copy the arm9loaderhax.bin to sd and configure with select on boot.

switching to aureinand requires all the steps you provided.

Why do you need to have a guide on updating the cfw? By the time somebody installs a cfw, they should know how to update it.

you would think so, but some people seem to get lost on how to update the CFW and end up messing something up or wasting time following all the steps when only some are needed.

This guide is to help those people before they make a mistake.

nice update!
this can be really helpful to people who just switched to a9lh. if you followed plailects giude for the first time and went through that whole process you might lose track. there isn't an explanation for everything, for example the purpose of all the bin files in the aurei folder.

Hi all..
A9LH N3ds install... all gone well until:

Copying EmuNAND data to SysNAND
Make sure you have restored EmuNAND from emuNAND_original.bin before doing this

  1. Go to "EmuNAND Options" then "Partition Dump...
"SD is not formatted for EmuNand" (and thus failed)
Also in the main menu it shows the SD size " & no emunand"
I did follow the guide and restored emunand (and sysnand)..

Any advice? thanks!

Update payloads then try it again. Also, the OTP guide has you use RedNAND, check for RedNAND options instead of EmuNAND options.

Thanks, oddly Emunand9 detects i have RedNAND, but my Decrypt9 does not.. I am using the latest version, should i try an earlier one? or should i try the option to "convert rednand to emunand" in emunand9?

for what I have done myself, Converting RedNAND to EmuNAND and back works fine. convert to EmuNAND then dump the partitions. I would advise backing up RedNAND just in case.

Forgive me, but in theory couldn't i just forget the emunand side of things altogether now i have A9LH? it boots into sysnand (it has the sysnand folder from part 1 of the guide) but I think I'm safe to update and use this? (I had nothing on my emunand i wanted?)

PS... my FW version now has the "Sys" prefix.. I guess thats AuRei working?

you could do that but make sure you do not have an NNID linked to the EmuNAND, if you do, you will need to move EmuNAND to SysNAND or you could end up stuck not being able to relink NNID to the console. it should work as it goes by serial but I have not tried it myself.

Thank you, i managed to follow the guide to the letter using a newer d9 from a thread here. Thanks for all the help!
