I am wondering how I'd be able to record audio from my 3ds directly either by using audacity or, better yet, have it work with OBS to stream with. I have seen other tutorials about this, but they all say to plug it into the microphone jack, but I have a laptop and have a headset jack, which it doesn't seem to want to work with. If anyone can help that would be great!

EDIT: My computer has Windows 10 installed on it

You're laptop should have two 3.5 mm audio jacks.
One's an input while the other's an output. (Input = Mic, Output = Headphones)
You need a male to male aux cable, connect one side to your 3DS, and the other to the input jack on your laptop (should show a mic icon).
Then in Audacity or OBS, choose that input as a mic. You should be good to go.
(I'd be surprised if your laptop doesn't have an input port.)

Does your sound software control how that headphone port reacts? I think it might support that, unless you have one of those newfangled headphone+mic ports commonly seen in smartphones. A dedicated mic port is required if that's the case.

I use this setup:

Male to Male P2 Cable, one connected to the 3DS and another to the PC.

In the PC i set the P2 from the 3DS as Mic input. I record using Xbox Games app (Windows + G command).

For my voice i use audacity with a USB headset.

No, my laptop only has one headset jack. I do have a male to male aux cable as well as a microphone and headphone to headset adapter if that helps

Try connecting your 3DS to the microphone jack of your headset, then connect your headset to your PC.
If it detects an input, then great!

There is background noise in the area that I'm am and my laptop has an internal microphone. Is it possible that the computer is just using the internal microphone over the cable coming from the 3ds because of that?

Still isn't working. I did have it work sometimes on my phone doing this, but not consistently

(I'm going to assume you're on Windows)
Go into your sound settings.

Check if you have any disabled inputs, one of them might be your 3DS.

There are none disabled. The WO Mic Device was something that I tried where I had my phone be the mic, but that didn't work, so...

I used my mic jack. Quality is pretty good.
I don't have a mic jack, I have one single headset jack

If you're willing to spend $30, I personally use this one: http://www.amazon.com/Behringer-UCA202-Audio-Interface/dp/B000KW2YEI/

It's USB-powered, and you can plug your headphones in the thing before it routes to the computer so you can reduce audio latency/lag. Then get OBS to record it as a microphone.

Alternatively, tell your computer to treat the thing as a microphone, then select "Listen to this device" after you've plugged it in in "Manage Audio Devices", in the Recording tab (right-click on it and select properties.) Then, just get OBS to record your computer audio, which should work by default.

Damn this thing looks really nice. I guess I could buy one. My mic jack is MONO only.

SHOOT, I forgot, I also had to buy this along with it: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00I1233J4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

So that's another $8, but it does record Stereo, is powered by USB, and outputs at a 48kHz (or tell your computer to output at the standard 41kHz) and I think it works great. I'm not sure how much better alternatives are, but I actually use this to record my Gameboy audio, too.

i dont know if its still help or if you found a way because the thread is more than a year old but your laptop probably has a headset jack mic and headphone in one and you need a splitter for that which you can buy for around 5 bucks on ebay or amazon and plug you headset in headphone port and 3ds to mic port and it should pick it up
