Hey guys,

I found a good way to distinguish between the long lasting controversy if the screen of your n3DS (XL) is an IPS or a TN one.

Its fairly bulletproof and easy to use, proceed as the following:
  • Go in a pitch black room.
  • Switch the 3D off
  • Turn off auto brightness and power saving
  • Set your brightness to 5
  • Go on this website on your 3DS: http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/black.php
  • Look at how many squares you can see on your 3DS' top screen. For example, if the first 7 squares look completely black but you can see the 8th square, the 9th square, and so on, I would record my data as: "8th square and up."
  • Now use the analog stick to scroll the page down so that the same squares show on the touch screen. Like above, record which square you can first see, and up. EX: "4th square and up."
Source: here

After you observed your Result, it would be fairly interesting what results you got - please take place in the Poll above!

Please Note: Due to the introduction of the IPS Panel-type in the n3DS(XL) Models, this tutorial is only applicable to those!

All the best,

My both EUR N3DS XL's are QEH and have upper IPS and bottom TN displays.
And as far as I know, no N3DS has bottom IPS didplay, at least I read that sometime ago on the internetz...

It's extremely faint but I can see greenish squares from 4 on my N3DS. What's the threshold because they are incredibly faint

Well - on normal conditions its quiet obvious, i think. :-)

My QEF n3DS in Metallic Black got two IPS panels too, ordered it like two weeks ago from Amazon.

You should specify that this is only for NEW 3DS models.... XL o3DS doesn't have auto brightness setting.

Added a Note :-)

This test is somewhat flawed as some people have better vision than others.

Well, technically the vision of the user doing said test is flawed and not the test itself. Vision does not affect the results of the test, the user could even be blind and the top screen would still be 8 (if they had an IPS), however the user may not be able to see this.

and, afaik, no IPS Panels on any condition.

Exactly - none the less, if you got any kind of bad vision, you may be getting results like 5/9, or 3/7 or something - those can be approximated to a corresponding Result which indicated the screentype.
If you got a vision as bad as not seeing anything near 4/4 4/8 8/8, maybe and Gaming Console is not the best thing to stare at :D

actually the easiest way (I've found) is to:

1) change your theme to basic pink
2) brightness 5, auto brightness off, power saving mode off
3) hinge all the way back (180°)
4) turn your n3ds so you're looking at the bottom where the cartridge slot and power button are, but you can still see the screens. did the screens stay pink or look like they're white?

Pink: IPS
White: TN

my top stays pink but the bottom looks white. OP's test also shows that I have an IPS top and TN bottom. this is faster, though.

Hard to get focus in a dark room with an iPhone 6s :D

Can you give me an impression, how your bottom TN Panel looks like in pink and under those extreme conditions?

PS: even if i look @ like 179° the colors are pink, same goes for the Top Panel

did the black test show you that you have both IPS displays? here's mine, btw - my camera is a potato but you can clearly see that the top screen's pink shows up just fine while the bottom looks white and is hard to make out.

Jep, i'm 99,9% Sure that i have both IPS Panels - got a friend of mine with unfortunately 2x TN Panels and his panels show the typical whitening/whashout while both (mine and his) device stand side by side.

As you can see, my bottom (IPS) Display is even at an angle of 179° (impossible to photograph, but by using my eyes :D) quiet stable.
What I want to find out is, if the Modelnumber (QEF/QEH) seem to have more IPS Panels.

What i got out of the Reddit Thread:
QEF are more often shipped with both TN, but if you got an IPS Version, its usual that both Panels are IPS (mine is an QEF Version)
QEH are more often shipped with a combination of IPS Top/TN Bottom Display Setting, but very rare to have both IPS

So even concearning this, both have its Pros/Cons :/
