Transfer emuNAND to another SD card. Working on New3DS!

EDIT: The emuNAND Tool has been updated and now works again!

Since right now the emuNAND Tool doesn't work, I've come up with a workaround:

Programs you will need:
Both these programs are free.

PLEASE NOTE: Doing the following method will make a 1:1 copy of the source SD card and put it on the target SD card. It will transfer everything, not just emuNAND.

How to:
  1. Plug the source SD card into your PC, this is the card that you want to transfer emuNAND from.
  2. Run USB Image Tool
  3. Click on the SD card and then "Backup"
  4. Remove the source SD Card and replace it with the target SD Card.
  5. Click on the new SD card, locate the backup image and then "Restore"
  6. Run EaseUS Partition Master and click on "EaseUS Partition Master Free"
  7. Right click on the SD card's partition with data on it, it should be in between two Unallocated partitions and choose "Resize/Move Partition"
  8. Click on the MIDDLE PARTITION, the one that has the data on it and expand it TO THE RIGHT (VERY IMPORTANT)
  9. Click OK
  10. Click Apply on the top left, then OK
  11. Done!
Important Information:
Currently with Gateway 3.1.0 there's a (visual?)bug with higher capacity microSD cards. When running emuNAND it doesn't show the "GW3D" in settings, before the version number telling you if you're in emuNAND or not, because of this its very risky to update emuNAND.
With my guide you can use a 4gb microSD card (where the visual bug doesn't happen) to format emuNAND, update to the latest firmware and transfer it onto a higher capacity microSD card.

Don't panic! - When the transfer is complete and you run the updated emuNAND on your new 3ds it still wont show the "GW3D" prefix before the version number. It'll just say 9.5.0-22E or something along those lines.

Any questions, feel free to ask :)

I'm trying to copy the files on my sd card to a temporary folder on my desktop and I'm getting an error. I can't delete it either. All my files have this weird "USBCÉ3à" name on it after using that backup tool in the guide? Any ideas?

Uh oh. That doesn't look good at all, I hope you made a backup of your SD card before you used the tool. (Even if you didn't, just go copy them off your old SD card right now)
Can you copy individual files over by themselves? Or do they all show up as this weird corrupted name when it tries to copy them?
If you can copy some files but not others, just copy whatever it will let you copy.

In any case, it looks like the partition is corrupted. Format it using partition magic (FAT32), then try merging it with the unallocated space to the right. If that works, then go restore the files you copied off the old SD card.

The backup tool (USB Image Tool) is more to ensure the EmuNAND is copied over properly from the old SD more than anything else, so assuming it copied fine and the regular SD card files didn't, it should be fine after you've re-formatted and restored the files from your old SD card.

Wanted to say thanks for this tutorial, it worked perfectly. One thing I screwed up though was when you're expanding the partition on step #8, I dragged the actual partition to the right and basically just moved it over instead of dragging the right edge of the bubble to actually increase the size. Dumb I know but yeah, I started over and realized what I did and worked great.

Went from a 32gb mSD to a Sony 64gb mSDXC. The restore of the image changed the file system to FAT32 so it works just fine.

Looks like you ran into the same problem that I did along with a couple of other users.
Here's some things you can try:

  • Copy off all your data on the SD card elsewhere (say, into a folder on your desktop) then format the middle partition using partition master. Once that's done, try adjusting the size to the right again as before and then copy your stuff back onto the SD card.
That did it for me.

Thank you! I was able to transfer from a 8gb to a 32gb card this way. Just one question.. Why leave 2GB of unassigned space?

Hey guys,

a friend of mine has a little problem. He bought a new 32gb micro sd card and did everything in this tutorial. But there's a little problem, in easeus he don't have the resize option.. we've tried everything to figure out whats wrong.. on his old 4gb sd card it is possible to resize..
Someone had the same issue and has some ideas to help us out?

Maybe supply a screenshot of easeUS when selecting the 32gb microsd card so we know what is happening on screen?

Thank you very much. It's almost exactly the same thing as I had just 15 minutes ago. Except it acutally had the option "Resize/Move Partition".. Can you anything else? (i.e. change driver letter) Don't forget to hit 'apply', I forgot it the first time around..
Other than that.. Have you checked if it was an actual legit microSD card? I know this may sound stupid, but hey, better to be safe than sorry!

Well the card is legit. Its a San Disk mircroSDHC UHS-I.
Sorry for asking but how can I do that? I don't had any of problems like that so..Im a noob with that tool.

Edit: Ok I found a way how to. But we still have that problem tho.

After looking at your screenshot it looks like you didn't get the emunand copied over correctly. You should have 1gb or 2gb unallocated on the left (the emunand), like 3gb or so in the middle and the rest as unallocated on the right. In your screenshot you have only the regular storage on the left and no emunand.

Maybe try doing the USB tool again on the 4gb card and make sure the 4gb card actually says it only has 3gb left otherwise it doesn't have an emunand on it.
Otherwise, I'm not sure what happened. Try the restore backup option again onto the 32gb card again too.
Worst comes to worst you're going to have to generate a new emunand and start from scratch.

Also the partition master software doesn't let you resize if the partition is corrupted, which was something that happened to me. Just need to reformat the middle partition as FAT32 again if you run into that, but it's not going to fix your current issue since you don't even have the emuNAND.

Good luck. Make sure you copy everything off the old 4gb card so you can copy it back onto the new 32gb card if you need to format so it'll let you resize.

The unassigned space is where the emuNAND is, your PC doesn't know what it is so it just assumes that it is empty useless space. Unfortunately this means if you aren't careful with the partitions partition master will merge the emunand with the actual empty garbage space and then you're in trouble. Hasn't affected anyone yet though.

I'll definitely try that. I thought he already checked that but he told me, he just did one backup. When I'm back from work, I'll let u know if it worked.

I can't seem to launch RxTools even though I can do it using my old SD card. Am I doing something wrong? All the files seem to be on the new card.

The new partition might be corrupted. If you try copying all your files off onto your PC, does it try copying far too much data than it should?

Also what's happening when you try to start rxtools? Does it give you the "an error has occurred" screen or does it just crash? Something else?

Otherwise if all is fine you can try recopying rxtools and launching via the usual method.

Hmmm, I don't think so.
Well, the error screen comes up, but if I delete cookies, history and turn off the wifi it comes up with just a blank screen after it has finished saying "Loading". Like when it does that blinking thing, it just becomes blank after

That does sound a lot like it's able to start RxTools, but RxTools itself is causing the problem. OR RxTools thinks it is installed but is trying to boot an emuNAND that doesn't exist or is corrupted (the one that was on your old SD card).

Try the following, in order to see if it fixes your problem:
  1. Put your SD card into your PC and open partition master. The SD card should have 2 partitions, one "unallocated" on the left, and one with your data on it on the right - here's a picture of what my old SD card looks like so you know what to look for. If it doesn't have the unallocated data partition on the left, then you haven't got an emuNAND and therefore RxTools can't start. Since it works fine on your old SD card, you need to go back and start the tutorial from the USB Image Tool backup/restore again so it'll move the emuNAND over. Make sure you make a copy of everything on the old SD card so you can move it back onto the bigger SD card if it needs to be formatted.
  2. If you DO have an unallocated partition on the left of the SD card, the main partition might be corrupted. Use partition master to format the right partition (the one with the data on it) as FAT32, then copy all your files back onto it. Remember they're still sitting on your old SD card so if you didn't make a backup earlier you can just copy them off that and onto the new SD card.
  3. If that still doesn't work, try an alternative firmware like Cakes and see if THAT will start for you.
  4. All else fails you'll have to make a new emuNAND from scratch and proceed as if you've got a brand new 3DS to hack.

I'm no expert on reinand but as far as I know all you have to do is delete reinand from the SD card.
If you meant wipe the emuNAND... well you shouldn't have to if it still works on the old SD card, and it's not there on the new one.
If you do want to wipe the emuNAND there might be a tool for that on the gateway launcher, I don't remember. But you can also delete the left partition with partition master.

Was thinking of grabbing a 64GB card instead of my 16GB one and was wondering if anyone knows the max speed the 3DS is capable of using? The options are either 48MB/s or 80MB/s. Not sure if it actually matters when it comes to emulating stuff, but there's no point to get the 80 one if 3DS can't actually use all of the 80MB/s.
