How do you game?

mario-box-question-mark.gif

On this relatively quiet week in gaming news, if anything, we could take some time and reflect on our gaming habits. Whether relating to the time you game, the place you do, with what you game or some other particular gaming quirks of yours, it varies from gamer to gamer.

First of all when do you game? In the morning? During the day? At night? Or simply whenever you have free time (does this even exist nowadays…)? While some game for a living, the majority will prefer completing their daily activities before levelling up in their game. We all have a preference for the time we game. For me, it’s mostly in the afternoon and Sunday is my gaming day!

Honestly, this picture is too cliché

Next up, where do you game? That’s something I never paid much attention to until I was going through the games I beat on a particular year. And all games I beat were either on a handheld console or via an emulator on my phone. Someone thought that I did this due to time constraint but really it’s all about the ease of access of handhelds. I’m really lazy to go boot up my TV and load a game through a home console and so prefer the ease to game on the go. But it could be for other reasons. The TV might be in high demand in your household or you might have to fight with your sibling over it. If you travel a lot, it’s easier to carry your handheld around. But for sure a handheld can’t match a beefed up home console in terms of hardware and dedicated games. But don't we wish for a console that works as both handheld and home console *cough* NX *cough*… Is that too far-fetched of a dream?

Also, do you eat? I mean, other than fulfilling one of the basic physiological human needs (which you shouldn’t neglect or you might end up like this Taiwanese guy), do you snack while you play video games? Hot pockets might be thinking it’s gamers’ staple food, but you might have better (healthier?) alternatives. I remember my friend in high school would have his lunch while playing on his PSP (then just released) and get all the crumbs and grease all over his new console. It wasn’t far from being the most repulsive gaming sight I’ve witnessed. I’d go for roasted and salted peanuts anytime.

Gaming should be a fun and rather relaxing activity. But extended periods of gaming sessions might lead to discomfort. That’s why we have so many accessories to remedy this. Whether improving our gaming experience or our posture while sitting, gaming accessories are not lacking. Suiting your needs, they range from the $13 Sonic knee socks (with quills!) to the $49,150 Emperor 200 gaming chair. Personally, the simple comfort of my bed satisfies me.

We all have gaming habits that’s unique to ourselves. It’d be interesting to hear about yours! If you didn't realise you had one, think about it, you'll surely notice one that defines the gamer that you are.

So Tempers, how do you game?

In recent years, I stepped away from a lot of solo console gaming, and primarily do social PC gaming anymore. Rarely do I go back on a nostalgia binge and go through a single player game, but for the most part, I try to make it a social activity. Even if it isn't face to face, online multiplayer with VoIP (usually third party, such as mumble) is my preference.

I've even taken up the competitive scene in one of my preferred games, and have come to realize that I don't even play it to win, just for the social activity aspect.

I game whenever I have free time and aren't doing stuff from my C book that I'm reading. I generally never have snacks but occasional have a instant-breakfast-like drink so I don't feel like I'm killing myself by sitting around all day. I have a tv, a RPi2, a wii u, and two 3ds's (one's bricked but I plan on fixing it soon) as well as a laptop, for ultra-light gaming (battle of Wesnoth etc.) and some emulators, in my room so I just will sit on my bed while I play. It's kinda weird on the 'what I game on' part, as I usually am always in my room when I game but it's like each week I'm either on my Wii U or 3ds, rarely do I spend an hour on each in one day, even if I'm playing different games. Trying to save up for a decent Intel PC that won't break my extremely tight *Canadian* budget (a $300 pc to Americans is $393 in Canada, and my budget is about $300) so I can run a game engine and play lighter games like Yooka-Laylee when it comes out.

Surrounded by hookers and drugs, of course.

During work days I usually game whenever I get out of work and finish dinner and stuff, on work days I just game whenever if I'm not busy doing other things. Recently I've been a bit too busy to do a whole lot of dedicated gaming, so I only ever manage to catch a match or 3 of BR on H1Z1 or something.

At the moment all my gaming stuff is just in my room so that's where most of it happens, but I'll be moving in about a month where I'll have an office setup for my PC gaming stuff and I'll most likely throw my consoles in the living room...which probably won't change much, really, since a big majority of gaming I do is PC gaming.

I just do what feels natural :creep:
Being serious though, I just do what I can with what I have nearby. I don't believe in saving for a $10000 dollar computer to run a 12 year old game from my childhood (Super Mario Sunshine (Just occurred to me that I'm 4 years older than it... The time sure does fly :wtf:!)) when I could use a $250 laptop I already own or use my Wii/Gamecube. For those that have a problem about how I game, remember this... You do you (if you want to spend $10000 to build a PC to run Gamecube games, by all means go for it. Just don't judge me for not doing the same.), and I'll do me (which is work with what I have and wait until I can see why to I need to expand.).

Mainly I sit on the couch and play the WiiU. These days I have other hobbies and comfortably go for over a week without gaming. As for when I game... Well thats kinda random and depends on a spur of the moment decision.

Before I was in a relationship I would game quite a bit. I have a crapload of consoles but I favored the handhelds so I could multitask and watch shows, movies whilst I gamed. I would take a break to eat and give my hands a rest — damn carpal tunnel!

Now I barely game except casual stuff (like Marble Heroes) on my phone. I don't miss it a whole lot except for finishing Metroid Fusion on my s7800b.

I used to go on massive gaming sessions that would be 12+ hours long when I was a kid. These days I tend to burst play instead. Sit for an hour or two when I can spare the time. Even when I have an entire day free I do other things instead, like go to the gym or get some of my writing done or something, Part of growing up I guess.

My flat is set up with the PS3/TV right next to the bed. It was once the hub of all activity but these days it's generally just a glorified DVD/YouTube/Netflix player as background noise. I carry my 3DS with me most of the time, but frankly it's a bit dead at the moment. I use it to paint on Pokemon Art Academy/Colours 3D, play a bit of Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, or have a quick round on Pokemon Shuffle. I just can't muster the energy for major game sessions any more. Too much going on in life. By the time I get home from work, spend some time with my family, sort out the paperwork and such I'm usually exhausted and just can't be arsed. I end up watching random crap on YT and Netflix, maybe playing on the 3DS for an hour or so but that's about it.

I keep a few snacks nearby but I'm trying to cut back in order to help my weight loss.

I game whenever where ever.
Tho it hasn't been as much as it used to lately but that's cause I got some problems going on at the moment.

Also neh, I might take a real quick snack when I'm doing a speedrun but that's mostly and sandwich.
GTA SA has a long cutscene which I can use to have a bathroom break and get some food.
If I'm just "casually" gaming then I'll have some food whilst gaming.

Anyway, current situation, I sit on me bed playing games in a tiny 2.5 by 2 meter room.
Or I'm at me bf his house, playing on me laptop.

I have been a gamer since I was about 4 years old. I started gaming because it was something to do and now I continue because I enjoy it. Nowadays I mostly lean towards handheld gaming (not much into smartphone though, I tried, but wasn't my cup of tea,) mostly because I work full-time and don't have the time like I used to to sit down and play at home. Of course when I get the time and chance, I enjoy playing whatever happens to be attached to my TV at the moment.

In my living room, playing consoles. after a day of work, relaxing.

Also playing my 3ds if I feel like it during days, in my free time.

But most of my time is eaten by my job, so it's a bit hard to play everydays. ._.

I tend to prefer single player games and couch multiplayer games for when I have guests. To me, a console is only really good for multiplayer, since everyone can see the same screen and has good support for multiple controllers. Yeah, I have a HTPC setup that can also be used for multiplayer PC games, but sometimes it seems some games have troubles with multiple controllers. I avoid online multiplayer games like the plague, just not really my thing.

As for when, it depends on what I'm playing it on. PC and console gaming (if it's single player) I typically do at night before heading to bed. Multiplayer games I'll play whenever I have guests over and they want to play something. As for handheld gaming (which is my prefered form of gaming) I'll play whenever I have free time as I keep my 3DS in my shirt pocket.

I generally don't eat when playing a game. I can multitask, but I typically enjoy a game more and get more into it if I just focus on the game. I also don't like to get my controllers messy. I still have my original Genesis and SNES controllers and they still work perfectly.

I'll play any console, any handheld, and on PC, as long as there are games I want to play on it. I love gaming, but it's still entertainment to me, just like a book or a tv show, so it's at the bottom of my list of priorities for the day.
